The iPhone 4 suffers 82% more glass breakage instances than the iPhone 3GS, according to data gathered by warranty firm SquareTrade.

After analysing data for 20,000 iPhone 4 handsets covered by warranties, SquareTrade discovered that:

• iPhone 4 owners reported 82% more damaged screens in the first 4 months compared to iPhone 3GS owners.
• Overall, the reported accident rate for iPhone 4s was 68% higher than for the iPhone 3gs.
• An estimated 15.5% of iPhone 4 owners will have an accident within a year of buying their phone.

Breaking down the numbers further, SquareTrade found that 3.9% of iPhone 4 owners reported cracked glass within 4 months, as opposed to just 2.1% of iPhone 3GS owners. A quarter of all glass claims related to breakage of the glass on the rear of the handset.

Here are charts breaking down accidents by type.

 Overall, it seems that the iPhone 4 is more vulnerable to damage than the 3GS.

• I would gloat

I would gloat about this and say just how worthless Apple products are like the Apple and Android fanboys would if this were Windows Phone 7, but I won't. I'm a bigger man than that. :-)

• Me, too.

@Tiggster

Were I a lesser-man, I would also gloat about the superior-attitude of iPhone-uses being cut down to size. I'd probably take some kind of satistfaction in the fact that Steve Jobs has yet another iPhone4 failure on his hands...but that's not how I roll.

@trickytom3

If either of you were at all men you wouldn't try to spin this into something it isn't - but you aren't.

This does mean that the glass back may not have been an improvement on the plastic case - or maybe just that the plastic case damage would not have shown up in the stats where the glass does.

Do the numbers on 2.1% glass breakage front only and 3.9% glass breakage front and back - and it is fairly obvious that 2 glass surfaces are breaking slightly less than twice as often as the single glass surface.

Also consider the stats on the iPhone 4 users not using cases as often as iPhone 3GS users.

All in all I'd say this shows that cases are a good idea, that the glass is improved over the 3GS and that the shills on here still like to claim Apple disasters that don't exist.

So Tiggster & trickytom3 - you may or may not be a big man, but that clearly does not have anything to do with being right!!!

• For the statistically challenged out there, you two included.

@trickytom3 @Tiggster The only real "fact" proved by this study is that iPhone 4 users are more accident-prone than 3gs users. "Fewer than 0.5% of iPhone 4 owners reported a non-accident claim, roughly the same as the iPhone 3gs." I'd say this one falls firmly into the "lies, damn lies, and statistics" category.

And by "bigger man" I assume you mean only from the waist-up.

@Tiggster

I'm not. See what happens when you let a design, marketing and repackaging company build a phone? It's almost as bad as an advertising company.

Aaaah Schadenfreude, it's almost as good as donuts ;-)
tonymcs@...
• Wow, you can spell schadenfreude, but not read English?

@tonymcs@... No other handset manufacturer has anything close to a 0.5% failure rate. Go back to the Krispy Kremes, fat boy.

• Quite Agree...

The iPhone is like a really good looking girl...who turns out to have herpes.

Not much bigger you said it any way ;-)

The title is deceiving you have the big number headline. But when you read the article its only 3.9 % of all the iPhone 4 sold. I am an Apple Fan, but I disagree with using glass outside. should have a poly-carbonate Back and Front and Back Why do they need Glass. If I were to get one (waiting for the verizon version) I would buy a case I don't trust cell phone of any kind out of case.

• What a load of BS

Windows Mobile 7 is getting nothing but a load of incredibly God awful reviews from everyone, so to try to hide that fact, the blogger posts this fake crap about the iPhone4 to try and misdirect people from the truth.

There, I said if for them, now the NBAers can take the day off.
:)
John Zern
• Really? Where?

@John Zern

I haven't seen one "God awful" review yet. I certainly haven't seen any that indicate that the antenna doesn't work, or that it needs to be covered in a big rubber, or that the glass shatters.

• RE: iPhone 4 glass breaking 82% more than 3GS

@trickytom3

Actually I have not seen anything about Windows 7 phones at all besides news of their existance.

It is too early to tell.

Certainly the rabid fanbois did not attack it in enourmous numbers - because they are not that way inclined, they just peddle news of Apple product's demise before release. Then continue after.

Yes they had a win in the BS stakes with the Antennagate issue - but then so what?

Remember how the iPad was going to flop according to the bloggers? - then it achieved a record for market uptake of a new product!

Now 2 days in to Windows 7 phones it is just plain ludicrous to make predictions - quite frankly I expect it to get 25 - 25% market share, that is what would be normal, as long as it is not completely unusable, which is unlikely.

That is not a prediction - it is an expectation based on no special thoughts or knowledge of the product. It may do anything.

To expect it to wipe out the iPhone or to flop completely for instance would both be very unlikely possibilities. But it may do either.

Or, you can't make phone calls properly. Now, that a god awful review!
eargasm
• Where are these "God-awful" reviews?

@John Zern

I have yet to see any beside the "predictions" a few angry talkbackers like to give.

Looks like your NBMers are so obsessed with attacking anything said against MS they didn't pick the humour in your remarks.

A good effort though.

• RE: iPhone 4 glass breaking 82% more than 3GS

@John Zern On the contrary, Windows Phone 7 is being praised by everyone, even Apple and Android fanboys like you. The difference is you are more close minded than those recognizing the truth.

• RE: iPhone 4 glass breaking 82% more than 3GS

@israeljamesbond I have not seen any reviews totaling bashing WP7 either but most of the reviews I have seen praise it while mentioning that expectations were so low that it's hard not to. Phone and phone OS reviews are similar to movie reviews, don't really mean anything at the reviewer might have completely different likes/wants/needs than you. Everyone should test out the items themselves versus taking the word of somebody on the web.
