iPhone 4 is a fragile beast

The iPhone 4 might be powerful, but it also seems to be a fragile thing.

The iPhone 4 might be powerful, but it also seems to be a fragile thing.

Third-party warranty company SquareTrade has tracked some 50,000 different phones over a one year period and logged the accident and non-accident damage rates, and the results make interesting reading. It seems that when it comes to accidental damage, the iPhone 4 isn't all that robust. In fact, doubling the glass surface area makes it the handset most prone to damage:

Note: Yes, I'm aware that SquareTrade is in the warranties business, and it is in its interests to make you convince that you will be the instrument of doom for your precious handset!

However, when considering non-accidental damage, the iPhone 4 is the most reliable of the pack:

Own a shiny new iPhone 4? Well, according to SquareTrade, there's a good chance that your clumsiness will break it:

We expect 13.8% of iPhone 4 owners to report an accident within a year, compared to 12.2% for both Motorola and HTC.

If you're clumsy, don't buy an iPhone 4, go for a BlackBerry instead!
