iPhone 4.1 incoming?

By | September 1, 2010, 6:30am PDT

Is Apple planning to release an updated iPhone that fixes the “Antennagate - Grip of Death” issue, or so says Marco Quatorze, Director of Value Added Services at Mexican wireless carrier Telcel.

Some initial thoughts:

  • It’s unusual for a phone company executive to have such information
  • If an executive has such information it’s unusual for them to be allowed to communicate that to sort of information to the public.
  • Quatorze gives a date for the new release as the 30th of September, which coincidentally the same date that Apple’s current case program comes to an end. It’s quite possible that this quote is based on some sort of misunderstanding.
  • If there is an updated iPhone, that’s going to raise all sorts of grief for Apple as customers lumbered with the old, defective phones complain and kick off lawsuits.

Personally, I’m not expecting a new iPhone, but if there is one, Apple better have a plan in place to deal with those who will undoubtedly be upset at their new iPhone 4 suddenly being an old iPhone 4.

The Motorola bluetooth headset track skip button has been an issue for years now. I too am waiting for a fix -- it was rumored the fix would be in an earlier 3G upgrade, then 4.0, then 4.01. Still waiting ...

4.1 will arrive today

I don't see how it cannot arrive today. There have been no updates, from what I've heard, on the developer site since early august. It's entirely possible that it is arriving today. I would be surprised if it didn't arrive today.

Many issues need fixing

EDIT: I misread the title, I thought you were talking about iOS 4.1. I would hope that iOS 4.1 comes out soon. I couldn't give a rat's @ss about iPhone 4.1. I have no complaints about the hardware in my iPhone.

These are the issues I've personally run into:
- stuttering custom ringtone (someone calls and iPhone loops the first 1/2 second of your ringtone and won't stop until you hang up the phone)

- phone won't wake up (on 2 occasions, I've tried to wake up the phone by clicking the home button, power button, shaking the phone, praying to Jobs, no go... only rebooting the phone woke it up)

- phantom email messages (you get email messages with no content, shutting down the mail app from the task manager is only way to make them go away)

- wifi will sometimes get into a funk where it will not automatically rejoin my home wifi after waking up the phone (only solution I've found is to reboot phone)

- when on bluetooth in my car, audio only gets routed through bluetooth about 90% of the time (while this could be a problem with my car, my Windows Mobile phone Just Worked with my car's bluetooth)

- general slowdown over time, I suspect it has something to do with memory leaks, reboot makes it snappy again, irony is that I reboot my iPhone as often as I had to reboot my Windows Mobile phone

- applications I've purchased in the App Store don't seem to know they've been purchased so if lose the iTunes folder on my PC and I ever have to reinstall a paid app, I would have to pay for it again

Don't get me wrong, my iPhone is working well for me despite the issues above and none of these issues are terribly serious. However, you Apple zealots need to stop telling everyone that the iPhone is perfect. It isn't. It is far from perfect. That doesn't make it a bad phone but you guys are lying when you verbally assault any who dare suggest that the iPhone isn't perfect.

@NonZealot I've run into a few of those issues with my 3G although iOS4 cleared most of them up... now I have slowdown issues which hopefully the new iOS will fix.

The only issue I have with the bluetooth is a compatibility issue with my motorola stereo headset where the track skip buttons don't work - everything else works though so it's not a big deal but it is worth mentioning.

I can say that I don't have to reboot my iPhone nearly as much as i did my old WM device but then again my WM device is older than yours...

And consider yourself verbally abused for saying the iPhone is less than perfect... LOL

in a desperate effort to kick Apple "down to size?" Is that the "antenna-gate" thing you are referring to?
@frgough
After all their gross exaggerations in their Mac vs PC ads, Apple absolutely and totally deserved the hyped up witch hunt over a non-issue. I loved every second of it. happy

It's Mexico & It's Telcel
b3lc3bu Updated - 1st Sep 2010
Here in Mexico especially executives in Telmex & Telcel want to look almigthy & they usually make this type of announcemt with out even knowing what the heck they're talking about, What's more likely to happen here it's that we saw a lawsuit from Apple.

BTW the link it's broken

@Micromush And yet you feel the need to comment on what you consider to be nothing. Isn't that a bit trollish?
