My inbox seems to suggest that you want to know what I think the iPhone 5 will bring, and whether those thinking about buying an iPhone should wait for the new handset of go for the existing model.

OK, first off, despite what some you might think, I DON'T have a super-secret iPhone 5 prototype here, or insider access to what Apple is up to. I do keep up with all the news and I do have a variety of supply chain insiders passing on information.

Note: A word about insider information and tipsters. You will see some outlets report on every little tip or rumor that comes their way. In my experience care needs to be taken as most 'tips' turn out nonsense. Even tipsters that have shown themselves to be reliable in the past can't always be trusted.

OK, first off, what we know for sure:

  • The iPhone 5 is on the way ... unless Apple has decided to draw a line under the whole product line because they aren't selling or something (yes, that's a joke).
  • The iPhone 5 will come with iOS 5 on it.

That's all we know for sure. Everything else falls into the realm of guesswork, superstition, 'tips' and made up stuff. However, it is still possible to draw a line through some of the dots and come up with some meaningful 'guesses' as to what the iPhone 5 might bring.

Let's take a look at what the dots form into:

  • September release Although there are no guarantees, a September release seems most likely. Have a guess at the release date in the Hardware 2.0 iPhone 5 release date prediction pool!
  • No radical design change Most 'sensible' tips seem to point in the direction of the iPhone 5 looking similar to the iPhone 4. A big design shift is really unnecessary and might just give more fuel to the idea that the iPhone 4 antenna design was defective.
  • Slightly larger screen It makes sense that Apple might try to make better use of the front of the iPhone 5 by making the screen a little bigger. There's certainly room for that to happen.
  • Cheaper iPhone I'm hearing that Apple is putting pressure on the supply chain to reduce component costs.
  • Faster A5 processor Makes sense. This upgrade would give the iPhone 5 a x2 performance boost over the iPhone 4.
  • Better camera, improved flash I'm hearing rumors of an 8 megapixel camera and an improved flash.

And just to round off here's a selection of rumors that I think are nonsense:

  • iPhone 5 and iPhone 4G/4GS I really don't see Apple launching two new iPhones, unless the iPhone 4G/4GS is just a GSM/CDMA unification release.
  • No physical Home button A 'touch' Home button kinda makes sense, but the current button is pretty iconic. I think the next iteration will still have a hardware button.

What do you think? What would you like to see in the iPhone 5? What feature would make you switch from your current handset?

Here?s a novel idea: wait for Apple to announce the next version of the phone. I think that logically they should use the Quualcom MDM 9600 radio chip. The only reason being that the chip supports both CDMA/GSM and LTE/4G GSM. Other than that, there is not much to complain about.

I'd agree that the Qualcom 9600 chipset makes sense as the basis for progression for the new iPhone. We'll see when the release notes come

While all the abounding rumor rampages are articulating through this arena..... chuckle... makes for great reading, I am still waiting.

    My req's are simple.
    - Has to have 4G and 4"+ screen.

    popcorn is my buddy!

    • And it has to slice bread

      @rhonin
just a feature I've been waiting for in a smartphone.

No, really - I like sandwiches!

    • Having used 4.3" devices.

      @rhonin

My requirement is 4" is the absolute max screen size. I am thinking the sweet spot is 3.5" -> 4.0".

The "4G" thing is more important if you are on Verizon/Sprint since CDMA's 3G is much slower and lacks simultaneous voice and data. Even on AT&T's 3G network, I consistently get 3+ Mb/sec. I would be very happy with Verizon's 3G coverage/quality and AT&T's 3G speed/simultaneous voice and data.

I am 100% unwilling to give up any battery live for LTE 4G.

ANYONE watching the Kremlin over the past week might have been left with a sense of deep confusion. On June 22nd, just after Dmitry Medvedev, Russia?s president, had (again) urged more political competition, the authorities barred the liberal opposition Party of People?s Freedom, led by Mikhail Kasyanov, a former prime minister, and Boris Nemtsov, a former deputy prime minister, from taking part in a parliamentary election in December. ?The election is losing legitimacy even before it started?, says Mr Nemtsov.

  • "Cheaper iPhone" or "Bigger Profits"?

    "Cheaper iPhone
I?m hearing that Apple is putting pressure on the supply chain to reduce component costs."

I'm not sure Apple wouldn't be doing this whether or not there was a price drop in the works - they might as well just pocket the difference as profit.

  • If it had (), I'd ditch my EVO and switch carriers if necessary:

    1. A removable/changeable battery. I'm a road warrior. I don't always have access to a power outlet, ac or dc. I DEPEND on having 3-4 extended life batteries.
    a) as a subset, if the thing could GUARANTEE me 24 hours of full-on use without charging (haha, very funny, battery technology isn't there) then this requirement would disappear.

    2. It HAS to have 4G. Period.

    3. Hotspot. MUST.

    4. Lastly, and this is a difficult sell to any cell carrier, the device MUST be able to be jailbroken relatively easily by someone who is tech-savvy. It shouldn't be so easy that ANYONE can do it, mind you: with power comes responsibility. But the device MUST be jail-breakable. For me, this has more to do with file system access and the ability to manipulate internet connections than anything else. It also has to do with some of the really lame restrictions Sprint (and Verizon is even worse, don't know about att) puts on the ways we can use our really expensive devices. Kinda like how Comcast locks the firewire and USB ports, in addition to limiting HDD size, on its cable boxes. There may a good reason to keep the general population from doing it, but for someone who knows what they are doing (and won't BREAK anything), it should be possible/available.

If I want to attempt to brick my phone, it should be possible ;)
