iPhone coming to Verizon ... I bet you wish you'd waited!

Summary: The news just in is that Verizon will begin offering the iPhone from January 2011.

The news just in is that Verizon will begin offering the iPhone from January 2011.

There's no official confirmation yet but if the rumors are to be believed (and they seem credible) then AT&T's exclusive grip on the handset, which has existed since the iPhone was launched back in June of 2007, is set to come to an end.

Verizon has almost 93 million customers and is currently investing heavily in a high-speed fourth-generation data network.

No matter how you cut it, this is going to give Apple iPhone sales a boost of a few million (analysts suggest some 3 million) in that quarter.

So, who wishes they'ed waited for that upgrade?

  • No Erection Yet...

    The iPhone - no matter who the carrier is - is all hype. I'm not getting hard over this.

    When are we going to stop being enthralled by what is now just ordinary cell phone fare?(and not a very good phone, at that).

    • In denial still?

      @tricktytom LOL. A device that changed the landscape being called hype. You're dismissed.

        I am always amused by such comments. Some probably still thinks the iPod was all hype and a fad also.

      @tricktytom ... I wouldn't call it hype, but I would call it over-exaggerated. It's a good platform for technophobes and people who just need to fit in with the crowd, for sure, because it's simple to use and still functional. But those who want to do more than just consume content, and those who can think differently than Apple's "we'll decide what's best for you" mantra do tend to look elsewhere.

        We have to remember where computers started as kits with switches. A hobby. That is the very roots of the computer and for decades now it gained power and ability but still the hobby or project part of the computers origins remained. Now I have the ability to do more with my tech after all I repair and support computers and other peripherals for a living and have so for close to 30 years now. Still the question occurs to me.. Why take my work home with me? There for I choose Apple. Now I'm one who can and has chosen to have computer knowledge. I'm not a good representative of the general population who could care less about computers and how they work or what makes them work. Nor do they care about a devices potential beyond it doing what they want it to do. They don't care that the iPad is nor run on a full blown OS or that it does not have USB or a DVD player build in. None of that matters not at all to these consumers and they are the vast majority of people in this country and the world. I think Apple has it right..

      "No Erection Yet"....take a CIALIS and call me in the morning, you'll understand why it's a great phone......btw, the iPhone did set the stage for the other companies to move on smart phone technology. And, I wouldn't call it "ordinary cell phone fare". I use it in my business every day, including MobileMe. The other phones CAN"T do what my iPhone does for my business.

    Since I have no desire for the iPhone you lost this bet, now pay up.

  • I wonder how many people

    are actually holding off to buy an iPhone because they are married to Verizon. Really, "I'm not taking that penicillin because Pfizer makes it."

    Childish really.

    Meanwhile millions of people continue to enjoy a revolutionary device and mature ecosystem.

      Better coverage is a childish reason? How odd.

        And why would they be... No AT&T coverage perhaps?

    • RE: iPhone coming to Verizon ... I bet you wish you'd waited!

      @People - pot calling the kettle black, huh. buying an iPhone = married to AT&T by your description.

      If AT&T worked like Verizon here, then maybe I'd actually look at an iPhone from them, but since I get no AT&T coverage, then I'm apparently childish, weird. I would be more interested in the iPhone if they worked with Verizon.

      • You are an exception

        @gcomputeronet

        because you'd consider the phone if you had coverage. My question goes out to those you have the coverage, want an iPhone, but won't because it's on AT&T.

        I thought I pretty much summed it up with my pithy penicillin comment.

    • Revolutionary in what way?

      It appears to do the same thing other phones, so I fail to see what is revolutionary about it.

        @Mister Spock

        Its not. It is just another phone with similar features as other phones. I am on my second iPhone and it is just a phone. It is a good phone but not magical or revolutionary at all.

        Which phones are you speaking of?

  • Maybe

    But will the i4 problems translate over? Or will Apple ship a new handset?

      @NStalnecker

      it will have to be new at least when it comes to the cell radios since Verizon is CDMA.

  • RE: iPhone coming to Verizon ... I bet you wish you'd waited!

    Not really. I had Verizon for years. You think Apple is controlling and restrictive, use Verizon as your carrier. Coverage? Perhaps. Better service? No. AT&T has been better than Verizon ever was. Why would I want to cripple my iPhone by using an inferior carrier? CDMA doesn't multi task.
