iPhone users hit by new alarm bug

By | January 1, 2011, 8:23am PST

iPhone owners who rely on the alarm feature to get their carcasses out of bed had a surprise today when the alarm failed to wake them up … again.

The bug is quite a specific one, and annoying. Here’s what I’ve found from trawling the web and testing:

  • First, it only affects those using iOS versions 4.2.1, 4.1, and 4.0.2.
  • Then the alarm needs to be a single occurrence set for either today Jan 1st) or tomorrow (Jan 2nd).
  • Recurring alarms are unaffected.
  • From January 3rd onwards things seem to work OK.

The workaround for now (until Apple fixes this - as usual no word from Cupertino …) is to set recurring alarms for the next couple of days.

Given that this is the latest in a string of bugs affecting alarms on the iPhone, Apple really needs to audit the code relating to the alarms and timers in iOS as this sort of remedial problem makes Apple look like a bunch of jokers.

@SonofaSailor No, it's because you're cheating on your lover Roger.

Hey while they're at it...

Maybe the ability to delete a single call from the call log without having to delete the entire list? (and without jailbreak)

And no, the sole reason for such a need is not because someone is cheating on their spouse.

If I recall in 1983 a simple PC exercise would be writing a program in BASIC for an Alarm. A dozen lines of code and you'd be done.

I wonder how hard can this be on iOS almost 30 years later.
