Is it time for a Wii hardware upgrade?

By | January 19, 2010, 6:18am PST

Summary: Nintendo’s seventh-generation games console, the oddly named Wii, was launched back in November of 2006 and became an instant hit. Since then it has sold well over 50 million units and enjoys popularity outside of the traditional gaming community. But is it time for the Wii to receive a hardware refresh or is there still plenty of life left in the plucky console?

Nintendo’s seventh-generation games console, the oddly named Wii, was launched back in November of 2006 and became an instant hit. Since then it has sold well over 50 million units and enjoys popularity outside of the traditional gaming community. But is it time for the Wii to receive a hardware refresh or is there still plenty of life left in the plucky console?

Note: Just to put the Wii sales into context, PS3 sales so far total some 27 million and Xbox 360 sales are in the region of 39 million, but all are dwarfed by Nintendo DS sales, which topped 113 million.

While Microsoft and Sony concentrated on developing powerful games consoles to satisfy hardcore gamers (in other words, people who were PC gamers), Nintendo took a step back with the Wii and created a device that was aimed more at the casual gamer. The graphics and style of Wii games are more along the lines of Flash games that people might play on Facebook than your resource-heavy PC game. But the Wii had an ace up its sleeve - it offered interactivity through the wireless Wii Remote that used accelerometer and infrared receivers to detect motion through 3D space. This allowed gamers to play games like tennis in a more natural, real-world way (although some of the actions and motions involved in some games push the boundaries of realism quite a bit).

Between late 2007 and mid 2008 (depending on the market) Nintendo released the Wii Balance Board which added a new dimension to the Wii and made games such as the Wii Fit possible.

OK, so the Wii has, and still is, a successful console. But more than three years on, is it time for a refresh? Many tech and gaming pundits think that it is, pointing to its lack of high-definition graphics as one shortcoming. But this constant speculation of a Wii hardware refresh has prompted denials. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime shot down rumors by saying that “we are confident the Wii home entertainment console has a very long life in front of it.” If that’s not enough, he added:

“In terms of what the future holds, we’ve gone on record to say that the next step for Nintendo in home consoles will not be to simply make it HD, but to add more and more capability, and we’ll do that when we’ve totally tapped out all of the experiences for the existing Wii. And we’re nowhere near doing that yet. There’s lots of ongoing opportunity for the consumer in the current generation with the Wii console.”

Now the question is, does Nintendo need to update the Wii in order for it to remain attractive to consumers? After all, both Sony and Microsoft have said that their consoles will have a ten year lifecycle (the PS3 is about three years old, while the Xbox 360 is a bit older, at four). But ten years is a heck of a long time in technology. In fact, I can only think of one platform that survived anywhere close to that, and that was the Game Boy platform. That ten-year lifecycle is driven more by economics than anything else. Microsoft and Sony have both found it incredibly hard to make games consoles profitable, so there’s no incentive to go through a development cycle just yet. This ten-year lifecycle statement doesn’t preclude a console launch before this date, but that will no doubt depend on a number of factors, such as the economy and whether the companies think that they can do a better job of selling the new consoles.

The real question for Nintendo is whether consumers feel they need high definition gaming capability. To be honest, I don’t think they do because the types of games that you see on the Wii don’t really need better graphics. This “better graphics = better game” mantra is a holdover from the old PC gaming days. You can have a game with great graphics that sells poorly (think Crysis), but a game can have poor graphics and still be a huge hit with a really long arc (think old-school games featuring Tetris or Mario).

What I think we’re going to see on all fronts in more add-ons and accessories for consoles (think along the lines of Microsoft’s Project Natal). The Wii could also benefit from games from third-party developers that make more use of the Wii Remote and the Wii balance Board. So far, I feel that while Nintendo do a really good job of leveraging the capabilities of the Wii, other developers are lagging behind.

If we can trust companies with their promise of long lifecycles, then it’s a good time to buy a console.

Wii Update
bobiroc Updated - 19th Jan 2010
As a Nintendo Wii and XBox 360 owner I find that I still enjoy playing with the Nintendo system but I think the many many crappy games that gimmick the Motion controller are actually hurting the device. While HD graphics are nice and find them to be almost necessary for some games to get the full effect I think Nintendo is doing a decent job offering games for all gamer types. They definitely tapped into a Market that know one else was able to do. If there is any truth to the rumors that float around Nintendo's next system will be a powerful one but I guess only time will tell.

Also on the subject of graphical power I still think game developers for the Wii underutilize the the power the Wii does have. Sure it is not as powerful as the other two systems and the hard core gamer market will do everything to slam it but as a gamer that has been playing games since before the original Atari I think Nintendo has always done a fine job delivering an optimal gaming experience. IMO they make the most reliable and best consoles in the business and have awesome customer service. My Xbox is a 3rd or 4th Gen by hardware and has been running good so no RROD and I do not have any reason to get a PS3, but I went through three PS2's back in the day due to hardware failure and Sony was terrible and basically said oh well not our problem. I have owned every Nintendo Console since the beginning and until a couple years ago my sister was still using my NES and SNES and they both worked aside from having to blow on the game cartridges every once in a while. She ended up getting a Wii and seems to love it.

Oh BTW have you seen the trailer for the next Metroid Game? If the trailer is any representation of what the game will look like it looks like they squeezed a lot of graphic power out of the system. It may be the best looking Wii title to date. There are a handful of other titles (Mostly Nintendo developed) that offer great visuals too but there are so many that look like they were slapped together over the weekend which brings me back to my comment above about developers gimmicking the Motion controller.

I bought a PS3 Slim, and I can't see why NOT the console has 10 years life cycle, even the PS2 are still selling. It is already expensive to develop games that take full advantage of the PS3 Cell CPU, so developers have no appetite for a new console any time soon. Ps3 will soon release 3D and motion controller that will also satisfy the casual gamer as well. PS3 has full 1080p support for both game and 1080p with lastest video decoding (H264). What features do you see you need on this console, really in the next few years?

I don't see Nintendo are in any rush either, since their consoles are still selling like pop cake, and they are making a killing selling it too.

Yes it is. I'd like to see DVD playback and an updated graphics card, which in turn would include HD but that part isn't important to me. Oh, and more channels, but you wouldn't need to upgrade the console for that.

To have DVD, music, etc playback you don't need any hardware upgrade, you could do that with a DVD channel or something like that.

The Wii's graphic chip is capable of HD as well...
nix_hed Updated - 19th Jan 2010
... Hackers have proven it can run at 720p with no noticeable slowdown
over 480p, and being the majority of PS3 and XBox 360 games run at
720p (and sometimes are upscaled to 720p from lower resolutions)
instead of 1080p, I don't think anyone would be too upset about it.

If anyone really questions how powerful the graphics on Wii can be, take
a good look at Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I think it still has the best
graphics of any Wii game to date, and graphics that rival that of many
XBox and PS3 games for that matter.

Agreed
bobiroc 19th Jan 2010
I think the Wii's graphical power is underutilized. There are a handful of graphically pleasing titles on the Wii and from what I have seen most are Nintendo's own games. I do agree that like another poster said now that the Wii has been out for a few years a handful of 3rd party developers have put a little more effort into making the games look good. Not sure if the 720p can be unlocked by Nintendo or not but I think they should consider it. Not that I feel that graphics make the game totally but maybe it will force developers to put a little more TLC into their game making instead of just putting out poorly ported versions or quickly developed games. Overall the Wii is a fun system and is great for social activities with families and groups of friends.

HD isn't a must for me
Loverock Davidson 19th Jan 2010
But I just wanted slightly better graphics, playing some of the wii sports and wii resort games, I just don't want to look at the big headed round mii's anymore. Farcry looks pretty decent on it, I'd like to see more game take on graphics like that.

I think they have it on Japan units
bobiroc 19th Jan 2010
I thought they enabled DVD-Playback on units sold in Japan but some regulation was preventing them from doing so in the US. I could be wrong there but I know it can be unlocked to play DVDs at 480P but then you violate TOS and warranty.

As mentioned before, I think the Wii has mostly been hurt by poorly designed and rushed games from developers that were trying to cash in on a craze (much like we are seeing with Facebook and iPhone apps today).

But if you recall the initial PS and original Xbox games, it wasn't until several years down the road that we saw developers really learn the platform and put the hardware through its paces. Compare the launch games against the last generation and there were substantial strides made in graphical punch.

Plus, take a look at the new Final Fantasy game on the Wii. I think the dev shops that have the resources and talent are starting to see what is possible and will start turning out decent titles in the next year or so.

However if HD helps them win over the hard-core crowd then it ought to be considered. Personally though, I think if Wii is going to come out with an improvement it ought to offer something others haven't offered yet, the way the original Wii did. To upgrade for the sole purpose of offering HD is more likely to upset current casual owners (making them have to upgrade in order to play new releases) than it is to win over the hard-core crowd.

Wanting HD Graphics...
qcesarjr@... Updated - 19th Jan 2010
does not a hard core gamer make. Seriously,
hard
core gamers want good games. I think people
have confused the term "Hard core Gamer" with
"frat boys who play a lot of Halo and Gears of
War". Those are the guys I hear screaming for
better graphics.

I consider myself a hard core gamer. Why? I
enjoy many types of games, from Guitar Hero, to
Final Fantasy, Golden Sun, Dragon Age, to Super
Mario, Metal Gear, Metal Slug, Fire Emblem,
etc. I could care less about graphics. I want
my games to be fun.

Wii? What a joke. I waited 12 hours in line to
get mine on launch. I've played it a total of
about 10 hours in 3 years. Secret: its not
because it needs new hardware, its because its
games suck!

I'm 21, and people might think that I don't
like Wii games because they don't have over the
top violence, or harsh language, etc. I
couldn't care less about that; I want a game
that I simply enjoy playing, without thinking
of stupid control gimmicks. Heck, I would play
a Barbie game if it was fun.

Here's what's going to happen if Nintendo
doesn't get its act together with some quality
control: Right now, game developers who aren't
Nintendo are pumping out games for the Wii like
there's no tomorrow. Guess what? People aren't
buying their garbage. So while Nintendo is
making a profit off of Wii Fit, Sports Resort,
etc, all the other games aren't selling well at
all. So, the other companies are going to stop
making games for the Wii. Next time around,
Nintendo will launch a console, but people will
be very skeptical about buying it. I for SURE
will NOT spend 12 hours in line for their next
console. Yes, their gimmicks work the first
time, and they may even make a lot of money
this time around, but, unless they get their
act straight, the next time around will be bad.
Its simple psychology!

Happy Wintereenmas.

Boy, you are a ray of sunshine. You have a pretty strong opinion for someone with little experience on this rock, and your disposition sucks too. Try not to feed this further by waiting 12 hours in line for anything in the future.

I had to be over a certain age to be
knowledgeable about something. /obvious-sarcasm

I learn from other people's mistakes, thank you
very much. If I fail the race, I know I'll at
least get a lot further than most by watching
where they mess up.

That is my experience with the Wii, and the
conclusion I have come up with is from studying
other companies and people's reactions to
companies' actions. I'm not saying Nintendo
WILL fail, but they are putting themselves in a
very risky situation by proceeding the way they
are (that is, with no quality control).

Now, once again, forgive me for my personality
and for my age. I hope you really do forgive
me! grin

If you're saying every game on the Wii sucks, you must not have
played No More Heroes, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime (including
the GC Wii-makes, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Madworld, The Conduit,
and New Super Mario Bros. Wii, among many others I haven't
mentioned. Then again, if you've only played your Wii for a combined
3 hours over the last 3.5 years, you probably get distracted by shiny
objects. :P

The thing is, there are lots of truly great games for the Wii and coming
to the Wii... you just have to weed out the crap to find the gems. There
are many resources available, like Gamespot, IGN, and the Nintendo
Channel on the Wii - two sources will tell you if something is crap or
not, and the third lets you watch a video so you can make that
determination yourself.

qcesarjr@... Updated - 19th Jan 2010
One has to really cover every single base on
every single post in order for nobody to attack
you.

I visit IGN like at least 10x a day (thank the
Lord God for women like Jessica Chobot!).
Gamespot has less updates, so maybe only about
4x a day.

The point is, I didn't say every game on the
Wii sucks. I mean, I was looking forward to the
Wii probably more than a lot of people. You
would think someone who waited 12 hours in line
for the thing would actually give the system a
shot.

Read my post below that states some of my must
play games. Actually, looking through IGN's
reviews, I noticed I missed a few. Still, to
make my point, I saw about 35 or so Wii
EXCLUSIVES that were above 8.0. What did they
include? Like 8 Guitar Heroe's or Rock Bands,
10 Sports Games, a few good 3rd party games
like Conduit, Little King's Story, Zack and
Wiki, and Madworld, and the rest are Nintendo
titles, which means about 7 Marios among 1
Zelda and 1 Metroid.

God of War Galaxy, God of War Soccer!, God of
War 3D, New God of War, God of War Kart Racing,
God of War Fast Food Manager. I'm not saying
any of those games suck, THEY DON'T! I am
saying we need fresh innovative ideas, not
small steps forward. A lot of games have this
problem, but the Wii has the ABSOLUTE HIGHEST
PERCENTAGE OF SHOVELWARE I have ever seen.

Pleas get the point everyone: I'm not Anti-Wii,
I'm Pro-Wii-Betterment.

I truly appreciate, understand, and even mostly
agree with your guys' (and girls') comments and
replies, but you have to acknowledge that the
Wii is not THE console to have right now. What,
does it think its the PS3? Ha, kidding (sorta).

Now, come reply and tell me I am an idiot
because I am thanking God for a woman like Ms.
Chobot, when people who believe in God
shouldn't be looking at women, or some other
insignificant fallacy.

RE: Is it time for a Wii hardware upgrade?
nothingness 19th Jan 2010
Yes and no. If they plan to widen Wii's appeal through video streaming, then they definitely need to upgrade their graphics to HD since regular def streaming looks like crap on HD TV's. However, if Wii's main mission is entertaining game play, then it isn't necessary. As beautiful as GT4 Prologue looks on my PS3, it isn't nearly as fun as playing Super Mario Bro's Wii with my two young children.

Excellent point, nothingness. It's odd that more people don't harp on it - SD looks horrible on HD monitors.

We use our old analog TV for dedicated Wii use in a spare room. Nobody wanted to sacrifice the HD for SD use.

... I found one for $7 on eBay ($12 with shipping). Going from 480i to
480p made a hugely noticeable difference with curved and diagonal lines;
some TG16, Genesis, and SNES games don't look all that great, however,
because of the dithering tricks that used to work for older TV sets don't
work on HDTVs (or even larger flat-tube TV sets for that matter).

If you like playing Mario and you've only spent 10 hours on
Wii.... Mario Galaxy and Paper Mario would've taken a lot
more time to play than that. So, what gives?????? Or did you
not like them when everyone else did? There are fantastic
games on Wii. Zelda, Zack and Wicki, Mario Carts, not to
mention Monkey Island (1st episode needed work, but it's
gotten better.) Sounds to me like someone doesn't really like
the Mario type games anymore.......

You have a slight point.
qcesarjr@... Updated - 19th Jan 2010
See, here's the thing: I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE
Zelda. Ocarina of Time is on my list as best
game of all time. I really love mario too. And
I agree, there are good games (like Zack and
Wiki, Paper Mario, and Metroid Prime
Corruption).

Here's the thing, when I purchase games, I have
to make decisions like Dragon Age vs. Paper
Mario, Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass vs.
Mario Kart, etc.

All those games you mentioned (except monkey
island [seriously?]) are on my must play list,
and most of the MUST PLAY games on the Wii are
by Nintendo. That is my point.

I am an adult now, and only have so much time
(unfortunately) to play. I've done Mario Kart
for years, same with Paper Mario, not to
mention New Super Mario Bro's which is
basically the same game I bought on the DS a
couple of years ago.

That is where Nintendo's problem lies. As I
mentinoed, its psychological. I mean, I even
recently bought Okami to play on my backwards
compatible PS3 over looking for anything on the
Wii.

Seriously, we're talking about very few must
play games. The one's that come to mind:
1. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
2. Metroid Prime trilogy
3. Madworld
4. Zack and Wiki
5. Super Smash Bros (rehash & has Mario, lol)
5. Paper Mario (rehash, but its okay)
7. New Super Mario Bros (blatant rehash, but ok)
8. Mario Kart (too much rehash)
9. Mario galaxy (never seen that before)

And these are my MUST PLAYS! Seriously, I can't
think of any more. Half the list is Mario!
Don't get me wrong, I want an ROI for my 12
hours, and about $500 I've spent on the dang
thing. And I will concede, maybe its been about
20 hours I played, but no more. Meanwhile, my
PS3 (playing many PS2 games as well) get SO
much more usage. Come on, even my mom who
hardly ever plays video games fires up the PS3
to play Soul Caliber instead of Wii Bowling.

I look forward to having fun on my Wii or Wii2.

I have a Wii, and from my perspective, it might need two things: HDMI, and more USB ports. Notice the word MIGHT. I already have a connector/cable to make use of Component Video, so HDMI isn't all that critical. They might want to issue a system update that would support USB hubs, however, if that's not already supported. I don't follow the hardware that closely, so I have no idea if that's already possible or not. The reason is that if you start out with just 1 or 2 remotes, then end up with more, you end up either replacing your USB attached battery charger (that's in progress for me), or you end up having to disconnect a charger to connect the ethernet USB device for network connectivity - a true annoyance, and the reason I'm choosing to replace the charger. Also, being able to attach a USB hard drive or flash drive on which to backup or save the existing firmware and game settings might be another darn handy feature. And as long as one is network attached, how about streaming NetFlix and/or YouTube?

Those last two aren't critical, but they could likely make it a heck of a good alternative to having to buy a Blu-Ray player or a media PC for the same functionality.

Games so far have been great, although I have to agree that success in some of these games is extraordinarily elusive, and the practice or lessons aren't necessarily useful. I found it odd, for example, that in Wii Music, I could conduct one piece and get 76 points, but on a piece far more familiar to me, only get 64 points. Why not let the instructions / lessons indicate EXACTLY what the game expects you to do, as the only motion indication it provides is to un-bend your elbow. Not exactly rocket-science, but not exactly clear as a bell, either. Having to discover success by accident makes it rather unrealistic...

Thus I think a refresh, while not essential, might be of some practical value, but not if the same could be accomplished in software instead of hardware.

I dont know if its time for a hardware update but I would like to see a system update. Like more things for the Mii's. Options, facial features, clothing, accessories. Additional channels, music, movies, stuff like that. And fully unlocking the wiis potential. Play DVD's, work on graphics, etc. I really think that once the wii is in your household that Nintendo doesn't care about the consumer anymore. Xbox and PS3 are constantly upgrading their systems to make them exciting to the user and with the Wii Nintendo has so much potential but doesnt seem to come through with anything. Just my opinion just wish that they would add things to the Console once in a while to spice it up.

You can buy third party light guns for them, without worrying about compatibility. Also the light guns you can get for the Wii are supported for flat panel TV.

Now if the graphics adapter in the Wii would ad a little more flatpanel support, for at least EDTV it would at least be something.

The family I know spend about 50% of their time playing Wii, 30% XBox 360, 20% PS2.
