Lenovo has issued a worldwide recall of 205,000 notebook batteries.  Are you affected?

The recall comes after four customers complained that their batteries had overheated after being dropped, incidents that caused minor eye irritation to one user and severe damage to the notebooks in all four cases.

The batteries affected are all 9-cell 10.8V, 5.2 Ah extended life batteries manufactured by Panasonic in Japan.  These batteries were sold by Lenovo between November 2005 and February 2007 with the following ThinkPads R series, T series and Z series notebook lines (these notebooks came with a choice of 4, 6 and 9 cell battery packs), specifically:

  • R60 and R60e Series
  • T60 and T60p Series
  • Z60m, Z61e, Z61m, and Z61p Series

All faulty battery packs have the following part number: FRU P/N 92P1131

If you have an affected battery, remove it from the notebookand you can continue using the notebook on AC adaptor power.

This incident is unrelated to the issue that affected Sony Li-Ion batteries last year.

  • Whew! I was worried for a minute

I just started using a new ThinkPad X60 Tablet PC yesterday and had a mild panic attack when your post crossed my aggregator. Thankfully this model is unaffected. Thanks for the heads up nonetheless.
  • 200,000 plus batteries?

Mr. Hughley, can you verify that the numbers are this high? Earlier this morning I received an e-mail newsletter from CNET where on March 1, 2007 a blog surfaced. The URL is http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-9692680-1.html?tag=nl.e501 and it mentions only 100,000 so I thought I would notify you of that. I understand there has been a two-phase recall from November of 2005 to February of 2007, according to this CNET blog at the URL above, while Lenovo's website states the numbers you put up. Can this be cleared up?
