Mac OS X 10.7 'Lion' available from the Mac App Store

By | July 20, 2011, 6:07am PDT

Summary: Apple’s Store is back up and Mac OS X 10.7 ‘Lion’ is now available for purchase and from the Mac App Store.

Apple’s Store is back up and Mac OS X 10.7 ‘Lion’ is now available for purchase and from the Mac App Store.

Mac OS X 10.7 ‘Lion’ costs $29.99, but it can be run on up to five machines as long as they share the same Apple ID.

The download is 4GB so if you’re downloading, be patient! If this is too big for you, Mac OS X 10.7 will be available on a USB flash drive come August, or you can go into an Apple Store and use internal WiFi to carry out the download.

Minimum spec for Lion is a Mac with an Core 2 Duo, Core-i series or Xeon processor (no Core Duo or PowerPC support)and 2GB of RAM.

I really should have hooked the Mac up via Gigabit Ethernet rather than rely on WiFi for the download … d’oh!

Apple warns you about the paradigm shift after installation!

Here’s the new desktop wallpaper:

And here’s Launchpad, which kinda feels like Program Manager in Windows 3.1 …

The hunt for his replacement will be led by ex-Hull and Salford coach Shaun McRae, who is returning to the club next month as director of rugby.
"I consider it an honour to have worked with the players and staff of this great club," said Agar.

Anyone can take the dmg image inside the installer and make their own bootable DVD or USB flash boot disks... but if you want to do that, make sure you do it before running the Installer you downloaded... or it'll delete the installer and you lose the image and you'll have to download it all over again.

@doh123
Thanks very much for that information. I can't imagine why Apple would code the installation to do that. I've never heard of any other installation program doing that.

Disappointed

This is the second straight OS from Apple that I have upgraded to and been disappointed with. Launchpad is ok, but Orbiter (which I was using) was much more customizable and easy to use. Mission control is an absolute mess, spaces was much better. Unless I am missing something (and I could be); in order to change the background on all of your desktops, you have to drag System Preferences to each individual Window and change it manually. Like Snow Leopard did before, Lion has slightly increased my boot time and shut down while still quick is a little quirky. Leopard was by far the fastest booting up and shutting down and did not have that annoying grey screen before shutdown like Snow Leopard did. Lion give you the grey screen, plus some weird dimmer greyish screen. Lion feels "too" much like iOS and not enough like Mac. Hopefully Apple will fix some of these bugs or I can always go back to Leopard. I won't even get into the scrolling and horrible look of the new Finder.
@MichaelWells Strange. My experience with Snow Leopard was that boot times and shutdowns were a little faster than Leopard (not much faster but still noticeable), unless of course you're running with minimal RAM. I've never seen a grey screen before shutdown.
@ssaha
I have a 15" MacBook Pro 2.93 Core2Duo, 4GB Ram, 320GB 7200RPM HD, and I had killed all start up items. Have you upgraded to Lion yet? Did you system come with Snow Leopard, or did you upgrade to it?
