Doubt the ability of Microsoft's new hands-free Kinect controller to change the way people game? Maybe this will change your mind.

Microsoft Corp. today announced it has sold 1 million Kinect for Xbox 360 units worldwide in 10 days and is on pace to hit 5 million by the end of the year. The announcement comes a week before the biggest selling day of the year, Black Friday, and in the wake of increasing momentum for Xbox 360, which led U.S. video game console sales for the past four months.

Over the weekend I had a chance to spend some time with a Kinect-equipped Xbox 360 and had the chance to play some games and I came away with mixed feelings. To me the technology felt kludgy and very first-generation. The lag between making a move and the on-screen avatar making that move got on my nerves, and interacting with the UI was a chore at times. That said, gameplay, once you got over the lag, was quite compelling.

I'm certain that Kinect will get better, more responsive and more user friendly. Problem is, at this stage it's hard to tell whether these improvements will come thanks to software updates, or future hardware updates.

I can certainly see Kinect games appealing to people who enjoyed the Wii. The thing about games consoles and accessories is that it's time that sorts the winners from the losers, and Kinect's long-term success will rely on the quality and quantity of games that make use of it.

Maybe ships instead of shifts ???

Actually they SHIPPED more but SOLD 1million to consumers. That's why he said shifts.

  • Finally an execution win for Microsoft.

Shipping a butt-load of a high-margin consumer product consumers actually want! Looks like Microsoft "copied" another one from Apple. ;)

Seriously though, this has got to feel good for the Softies. Let's hope it's enough to move MSFT out of the doldrums. Those options have been treading water for long enough.

      @matthew_maurice

Sounds like good news for MS. I think Kinect will do well, maybe "too well", now that the drivers have been "cracked".

I also read that HP is experiencing a greater than expected demand for their W7 tablet, but they apparently only made 5000 but had 9000 pre-orders. They are going to have to do a lot better on that front if that report is indeed correct.

@Economister I think that is becaues some people realize the power of a Windows 7 tablet. Even if Windows 7 is not designed to run on a tablet. I can think of atleast 10 good uses for it.

@matthew_maurice How is this copied from apple? Oh wait....

  • Doesn't matter

It's still a failure and will be in the bargain bin by December next to the Kin, and WP7. Right? ;)

  • AKH doesn't like an MS product? WOW!!!

While AKH is under strict orders from Apple to spread as much anti-MS FUD around as possible, everyone I know who has Kinect is sore and LOVING it. There is nothing kludgy or first-generation about this. The XBox vision camera was first generation and kludgy, this is refined and works fantastically well. Apple could learn a thing or two from MS.

@NonZealot You have to admit, if Apple did a motion controller, they would get it right on 1st gen. There wouldn't be the lag AKH describes. Why? Because Apple makes genius products right from the word GO.

      • Yes, of course!

Because Apple makes genius products right from the word GO.

Like the gen 1 iPhone that didn't have native apps, didn't have multi-tasking, didn't have copy and paste, lousy bluetooth support, etc. etc. etc.

Like the gen 1 AppleTV that was so useless, even Apple zealots refused to buy it!

Like OS X 10.0 that was so bad, Apple made the unprecedented step of releasing a patch (OS X 10.1) for free.

Apple constantly releases really, really, really lousy gen 1 products. History simply doesn't support your Apple zealotry.

      • I would have to disagree

History has proven that is not the case.

@MSFTWorshipper Yea just like the iPhone 4? Or the overall amount of dropped calls that you see on iPhones. Or the iPad being nothing more than a large 3rd Gen iPod touch with a iPhone 4 CPU. Or their macbook Air being a piece of trash. Or the iPad overheating. Their products are so good that they are the only brand that not only requires their own stores, but requires you to MAKE AN APPOINTMENT, to get your problems dealt with. Because obviously there are so many issues overall, that there is no way you could just walk in and get service.

@MSFTWorshipper Wow, this article by one Microsoft fanboy responding to another MS fanboy has really set off the fanboy echo chamber as they all pile on to show just how unintelligent they really are. You mental midgets really can't understand sarcasm, can you?

According to report (ign.com i think) they removed a hardware capture component and decided to use software and xbox cpu instead, which causes some lag issues. No I might not speak for everyone, but I'll gladly pay extra for them to add the h/w back in for reduced lag.

They DID add hardware in. The Kinect has a 1 GHz processor on board.

Of course Adrian finds big flaws with the Kinect, that's his agenda with anything MS.

I guess Ed Bott's family (including the family dog) having an absolute blast with it the past week is just a fluke. Maybe they don't have as high standards as AKH. Or, like others have eluded to, maybe Adrian is just an Apple shill.

I used to read your posts to try to learn something, Adrian. Now I just read them to find out what ridiculous thing you will say next. Keep up the good work, you don't ever fail to meet my expectations.

Totally agree with you and NZ. I knew without reading what he was going to say.

I am going to have to separate out feeds from AKH and Paul Murphy to the tech-humor group.

        @mep01378

You got that right. NZ and BB57 are pretty much on the money. AKH used to have good articles when he talked about hardware and how to use it and testing it. Now his blogs are just anti-MS pro-Apple stuff. It never used to be that way. AKH sold out.

    • RE: Microsoft shifts 1 million Kinects in 10 days

@babyboomer57 Well what do you expect. Hes on Apple payroll, or maybe he hopes if he spreads enough anti-MS and Pro-Apple FUD he will get on their payroll.
      Jimster480
  • If it were an Apple Kinect

it would have sold 5 million in 10 days, and 25 million by the end of the year. Face it, MSFT has not chance in the consumer electronics!
