Mozilla pushes out Firefox 9.0.1

By | December 22, 2011, 10:02am PST

Summary: No, it’s not a hoax.

A day after releasing Firefox 9, Mozilla is pushing out Firefox 9.0.1 in response to reports of a bug fix in 9 causing crashes on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Alex Keybl, engineering project manager at Mozilla offers up an explaination over on Bugzilla:

For everyone following along, we built Firefox 9.0.1 with bug 708572 backed out (see https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=708572#c11). We’ve pushed Firefox 9.0.1 for all platforms. Although we think Windows is mostly unaffected, we still decided to move forward with Windows->9.0.1 for the following reasons

* We were living with 702813 for most of the life of Firefox 9, and that the backout in 708572 has actually gotten less testing
* New crash signatures (Windows even) have been found which are related to 711794, although none yet are significant or startup crashers
* We are uncertain about the number of sites affected by 702813
* We are uncertain about whether or not we 100% fixed 702813 with the backout in 708572
* The population of Windows users who have already updated to 9.0 is small (in the low millions)
* There is tracking/analysis benefit of having all desktop platforms on the same Firefox version

The bug fix that’s been removed from 9.0.1 was causing problems when certain toolbars were installed

Some Firefox users were so freaked out by the sudden and unexpected reelase of 9.0.1 that they thought it was a hoax:

If you’ve already got Firefox 9.0 installed it is recommended that you download this update.

I went to download 9.01 but got version 10.0. I think it may be a beta version but it doesn't say so when clicking on the Help/About menu. With this version I have icons on the bookmark Drop Down Menu.
Ridiculous non-sense.

@adacosta38 Did you even read the article? They didn't add anything. They removed a bug fix that caused problems with certain toolbars.

@Aerowind

Who uses a goddamned toolbar today? I sure as heck don't and I refuse to install any toolbars on my system as part of anything else, save the Norton Toolbar that adds some 'preemptive scanning' to the browser.

It happens in the same way Adrian mispelled explanation and release, it's just more damaging in code wink

Doesn't matter to me as I'm happily using Firefox 3.6.24, which was updated yesterday to 3.6.25 to fix, among other things unrelated to security, a security vulnerability on Mac OS X. Since I don't have a Mac (or a Hackintosh) and 3.6.24 is performing swimmingly on my Windows and Linux systems, there's no need to update. happy

The new release, on my Apple iMac system, outperforms Safari and Chrome (latest versions). I'm more than pleased with this release.

You've obviously never had to write code for a living... Do web developers a favor and upgrade to the contemporary release and not stay on ancient bits.

Read what mheartwood from below states. It might relate to why RHM has also chosen to stick with an earlier release (they're not alone btw). The headlong rush to embrace ever more, replete with far too many surprise bugaboos in the packaged equation, almost always ends in this kind of fallout.

Sadly, this downside to "progress" doesn't begin or end with Firefox alone.

@Rabid Howler Monkey: "performing swimmingly" is just what XP and IE6 users keep saying too, funny that.

Links? There is actually a security advantage to running IE8 (vs. IE6) on Windows XP, although Chrome with it's sandbox, and to a lesser extent, Opera and Firefox/NoScript, provide superior security for most consumers.

And is Firefox 9.x more secure than Firefox 3.6.x? Do you consider WebGL to be a security feature? Again, links?

@Rabid Howler Monkey No need to update? You should see the javascript performance increases, not to mention the ability to only load tabs as they're used, great syncing, "panorama" tab management, etc.

I'm happily running 3.6.25 and won't be upgrading for awhile. Most of the equipment I deal with is configured through web interfaces and virtually all of it has some bugs relating to an incomplete HTML5 standard, which 3.6 ignored. When I tried 4.0, I suddenly found I couldn't do my work because of all of these bugs caused the pages to fail.

I think it's good Mozilla recognizes some people will want to be on a fast track with 9.0.1 while others (especially in enterprise) need to be on a slower track with 3.6

It may even become a permanent fixture having it this way.

Tough crowd. Lighten up.
@selloco So why cant Mozilla be placed under the microscope?

Just goes to show you..for-profit companies arent the only ones with poor management.

There are more that one Firefox.

@otaddy ... Firefox running on Windows can't be expected to correct all the OS anomalies, but (in my opinion) provides additional protection vs. IE's using Active-X.

Firefox for Linux, which I've been using for 9 years, hasn't had any problems or issues, especially crashing. I never use toolbars. One thing I noticed here is the authors and posters have one-dimensional thinking in terms of problems. i.e. Firefox has such and such security issue or crashes. The other variable in the equation is the OS, whose culpability is never addressed. Windows may be the dominant OS, but there are millions of other users with other operating systems in use also, that not surprisingly don't have the same issues with Firefox that Windows does.

Windows users should be careful how intensely they criticize Firefox for Windows or other Windows applications. They are never standalone and issues that arise could easily rebound back to the OS. In my view, this OS issue has been hidden from view, but surfaces months later as a critical update, unconnected to the original story blaming the application. Firefox cannot be expected to correct Windows issues that don't present themselves to other OS's.

Many times, the design of Windows allows a security breach through the application. Modifying the application would not protect the OS from another attack vector. The application may be modified in the same way for Linux and Apple, but since the OS does not have the same design, it wouldn't be necessary for security.

Twenty "Firefox problems" may really be twenty Windows problems. This distinction isn't normally easy to find and usually never articulated in the articles here.

@Loverock Davidson- The fourth.
It would have sounded a lot better if you had said. I made sure all users within organization had this update installed before I did.

Firefox 9.0.1 no favicons bug
Killhippie 22nd Dec
On OS X 10.7 at least there is a bug that means you have no icons on the drop down bookmark menu (one at the top of the screen not bookmark toolbar) there is a temporary fix, not that my mother could do it. I think Mozilla is rushing things to much, ignoring bugs for deadlines, and should remember it does not have the money that Google has for R&D, so don't try and compete with Chrome, just slow it down and be better than Chrome.

@Killhippie as long as is better than IE, everything is good. From what I have seen at this time, it easily beats IE.
