I know it's not modern tech, and it was designed and built before some of you were born, but I still think that the Voyager probes (along with the Pioneer probes) are pretty awesome and so this long distance reboot deserves coverage:

Earlier this month, engineers suspended Voyager 2's science measurements because of an unexpected problem in its communications stream. A glitch in the flight data system, which formats information for radioing to Earth, was believed to be the problem. Engineers were able to replicate the glitch in a computer lab, showing that a single bit flip was responsible. NASA plans to reset Voyager's memory tomorrow.

The spacecraft is so far away it takes nearly 13 hours for a radio signal from Earth, traveling at the speed of light, to reach it, and another 13 hours to receive a response.

That's a pretty cool reboot!

    Once they connect, won't the computer be off line for a few hours while Windows 3 updates?

    • Ummmm... No.

      @tburzio

      Windows 3 was released in 1990.
      Voyager 2 was launched on 20Aug1977.

      I doubt that even if Windows 3 had been around in 1977 that it would have remained up and running for almost 33 years.

        I think he was joking ;-)

  • I am amazed that its still working

    They don't build them like they used to. ;-)

    I'm guessing sending someone out there to press the reset button will not be an option. I hope the system doesn't halt on reboot.

    @tburzio this was long before Bill gates made any money. So we don't have to worry about any blue screens of death. Or dead MAC symbols.

    Let's just hope that after the reboot, the gibberish ends but the spacecraft responds only to the name V'Ger :-)

  • Reset my memory while they are at it

    More than deserves coverage! A technological masterpiece that which along with Pioneer showed us more of our solar system before or since. Just hope they figure a way to reset my memory when the Alzheimers sets in. What were we talking about?....

    This is truly awesome engineering at its finest... And for 33 year old technology it is a wonder it is still working given the dynamics of space travel and debris. Definately something to be proud of and well worth the mention. Thanks for the article.
