New leaked Windows 8 screenshot

By | February 23, 2011, 4:43am PST

Is this a screenshot of the Windows Update screen from Windows 8?

Check out the leaked Windows 8 screenshots here!

The screenshot originaters from a notorious leak, who goes by the name of Zukona, who is well known for publishing reliable information on builds. This screenshot, which appears to show a new “restart if required” option in Windows Update is allegedly from the 6.2.7930.0.winmain_win8m2.110217-1825 build of Windows 8.

We don’t know an awful lot about Windows 8 yet. We had some leaked slides, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said is was “risky,” and Intel want to put it onto smartphones.

Actually it could be worse

"restart if required" implies it may or may not restart. Only MS could think this is an improvement:-)

Same obnoxious, in-your-face metal/chrome frame!
It should be about what's inside the frame that matters!

The part that I do find interesting is mentioning over and over again the article about Intel wanting to put it on phones.

This is really interesting because the Windows Kernel reduced to a minimum has minimal footprint (see MinWin) and the kernel itself is VERY advanced (although of course it's in everybody's (and blogger's) interest to trash MS).

I also don't see how different Android is from putting Linux on a phone. They took the Kernel (the minimal parts) and built an api propper for a phone.

Why shouldn't MS do this, especially if the Windows Kernel (the KERNEL) includes advanced things like Prioritized IO that I believe no other OS can do at this point.

Now if they want to put the Win32 API on phones that's a different (and crazy) thing. But a Windows Kernel with a propper phone API I believe could be an interesting thing to watch.

as for this current post, to be honest I also don't think this is worth a blog post, especially if you consider Vista's program of Betas that included all sorts of things (including WinFS) that were later abandoned.
So a new feature that is a checkbox... ok. that's certainly big compared to what WinFS and similar were for Vista.

Hopefully, Windows 8 will have a tablet mode, so it can have a tablet touch skin on top of the OS so it can be used in hybrid notebooks or tablets. Hopefully Windows 8 will support Thunderbolt technology and 24 bit audio drivers too! I wish Windows 8 won't be used in smartphones, WP7 is a great OS for that type of devices.
