Nintendo will try to woo core gamers with Wii U

By | June 30, 2011, 3:53am PDT

Nintendo is hoping to woo core gamers back to its updated Wii U console because of the high definition graphics and conventional controller.

During a Q&A session at a shareholder meeting at Nintendo’s Kyoto HQ yesterday, CEO Satoru Iwata had this to say about the the upcoming gaming platform (translation as reported by Andriasang, original here):

Q: Will core gamers accept Wii U?

A: Wii was not accepted by core gamers because they did not want to abandon their preferred control approach. Additionally, Wii did not use HD because HD cost performance at the time was low. Wii U makes it easier to use conventional controls. Also, the Wii U controller is not as big or heavy as it looks.

Good point, but it’s worth putting this into some context. First, Nintendo was the one that turned its back on core gamers with the Wii, not the other way around. The whole purpose of the Wii was to have a games console that appealed to the sorts of people who wouldn’t have thought of buying a games console. It’s a strategy that appears to have worked in the short term, but it wasn’t so successful in the long term, especially when it came to game sales.

Another thing about the Wii was that it was designed specifically to cater for a lower graphics demand that other consoles around at the time. Nintendo once again chose to shun the core gaming market (a market that has proven itself to have quite deep pockets) and head off into uncharted territory.

And finally, the controller. The Wii Remote was again Nintendo’s plan to ‘thinking different.’ Yet again, the decision to break away from the traditional game console model was one that Nintendo undertook willingly in order to try to side-step Microsoft’s Xbox and Sony’s PlayStation and carve for itself a new niche. It didn’t work, and it’s a bit late for Nintendo to start rewriting history and pretend that it didn’t deliberately dump core gamers with the Wii in favor or an untested strategy that ultimately didn’t work out.

Something I never thought I'd do but I will defend Nintendo here. On one of the few decent FPS to make it to the Wii was Call of Duty: World @ War. The graphics were limited but I never found the control system anything other than a joy to use. Much easier than a joypad any day of the week. If the Wii had had a decent graphics system the controls weren't inherently bad for fps. But the software released for it aside from a couple of decent in house efforts were all destined for the bargain bin - baby sitting party anyone? For those who weren't interested in graphics (read: little ones and parents) then stuff like Nickelodeon Fit and Wii Fit are ok with the balance board.
The problem with the Wii was none of those things. Pretty much the only problem the Wii had was all but a handful of third-party games were useless shovelware. Nintendo's first-party games were pretty much the only ones to utilize the control scheme well, barring a few rare exceptions. Most third-party crap usually degenerated into gesture gameplay.
LOL, "...it?s a bit late for Nintendo to start rewriting history and pretend that it didn?t deliberately dump core gamers with the Wii in favor or an untested strategy that ultimately didn?t work out."
???
Last I remember, Nintendo was sold out of Wii consoles for years, and was making more money than the Big Two even without the DS (which is a successful console that brought casual and ******** gamers alike to play), and only recently has seen a drop in yearly sales.
As Aerowind said, many of the 3rd-party titles flopped, but so many Nintendo games turned out to be great! Can't deny Smash Bros. wink
What do you mean Nintendo's Wii strategy didn't work?
It sold 80 million compared to the other consoles 50 million - and they made a profit from every single Wii sold. I'd call that a success.

The Wii only started to dip in sales when their rivals introduced motion controls to their consoles too.
Dr.Kendo and md@ took the words out of my mouth. Where have all of the fact-checking journalists gone? Old school journalism actually required physical legwork but now with the internet it takes literally seconds to find these facts and yet it doesn't happen.

Nintendo's biggest problem has ALWAYS been supporting their third-party developers. If they were to put some effort into that arena, they would be much better off. They have always neglected third-party game creators and in the past have even excluded them from releasing games on their console for the first year.

The other console-makers have much higher success because they get a LOT more games out there. They only do that by supporting other game creators/developers.

Once/if Nintendo gets over themselves and supports other developers, they will see much more success.

Nintendo may have sold a crap-load of consoles, but how many additional games were purchased afterwards? Much of the console purchasing was price driven since the Wii was the lowest price of the major consoles. I'll bet there's a ton of Wiis occupying closet back corners.

How many exciting games reviews did you read only to be disappointed to see the game was available on almost every platform except the Wii?

Nintendo missed the boat.

Right after the Nintendo 64 they began adopting this more family friendly policy which limited their game library and alienated a lot of core gamers. The people who grew up with Nintendo consoles now had nothing worth playing on the consoles because of Nintendo's foot dragging on publishing anything with a rating over T and when they do publish those titles they are often butchered, half assed ports or spin offs of popular titles that somehow fail to capture the essence of the original, like Dead Space Extraction. If they don't shape up soon they will have to fall back on their hand helds and abandon the console market. Every console ever made since the beginning of gaming has been sold at a loss with the expectation of making up the loss in game sales. I don't see how Nintendo can continue to cover losses from a new console without a compelling library of titles.
The wii will always be the console for kids and moms. It doesnt have that appeal as a real gme console. the lack of a true controller limits it and the fact it just doesnt have games for anyone over 12 make it a looser in the gamer circles. They need to make a second gamer console for the gamers and adults thats more full featured with normal controllers better styling and a true full game line up.
@Fletchguy Actually Fletch, there was the Classic Controller and the WaveBird. Both would fit under your definition of standard console controller. And I'm willing to bet that the tablet controller of Wii U is going to be great for the hard core FPS and sports titles, since you'll not be losing screen real-estate to weapons and life info or calling an audible without a pop-up on the screen.

Just sayin'.

Resident Evil 4
davidr69 30th Jun
I think RE4 is perhaps one of the best games for the Wii. Aiming to shoot is much better than using the PS3 and XBox controller. Unfortunately, between the dog/cat/pony pet style games, it appeals mostly to children.
@davidr69 Don't forget about No More Heroes 1&2, Mad World, and House of the Dead Overkill. Those titles, and the RE4 WiiMake were definitely not kid-friendly and I've yet to see any of the 4 I mentioned on systems other than the Wii, even though one of the games is being ported and expanded for PS3 (sorry 360 owners) and the series is going to have the third installment on PS3 and Wii U.
