You might have noticed that the Platform Preview release for IE10 was only compatible with Windows 7. Well, if you’re a Vista user, you’re not only out of luck with the Platform Preview, but also with the final release.

Here’s the official word, straight from a Microsoft spokesperson:

Windows Vista customers have a great browsing experience with IE9, but in building IE10 we are focused on continuing to drive the kind of innovation that only happens when you take advantage of the ongoing improvements in modern operating systems and modern hardware.

So, not only will IE10 leave XP users out in the cold, but also Vista users.

  • Microsoft is moving on
I think this is good. It's no different than Apple not developing applications for 10.0-10.4. It's healthy to move on. I grew up using XP and it wasn't a real drag for me not to be able to use IE9, because i understand what MS is doing.

many users I know wanted to try Vista / Win 7 and had lotsa problems. Most were from legacy hardware that works (scanners / printers). So they use other modern browsers and they are happy for now, if they do want to upgrade it's going to force them to upgrade the legacy periphs first or at the same time as their system.

@~doolittle~ I had plenty of issues with Vista and legacy hardware but all of my hardware works just fine with Windows 7.

    @~doolittle~ legacy drivers

The issues that got such bad publicity for Vista were pretty much solved in service packs, so this is really old news and not very relevant now. Besides, either through hardware or software changes old peripherals and software will get left behind. Our newest computers don't have ps/2 ports for our older keyboards and mice. The new docking stations don't have a parallel port for our old printers. Sometimes you can adapt, sometimes you just go and buy new equipment. Hardware vendors do this to you as well as software, so it is just the way the industry goes. As long as you aren't dependent on a ISA card or such you adapt and move on.

Thanks. But they do make an Operating System just like Microsoft does so it is a valid comparison.

No it's not just like Micro$oft. You sound like somebody who's never used OSX before.

If it was just like Micro$oft then there wouldn't be any Apple. We'd all live in a total one OS world controlled by your handlers in Redmond. Just the way you'd want it.

@LTV10 It never stops being hilarious how quickly the Apple defenders come out when anything is said that appears to be placing MS and Apple on the same level.. All Justin071894 did was make a comparison between two major OS manufacturers on their software sunsetting policies. A very valid comparison.

No, what's hilarious is that I'm not even a regular Apple user but then I don't go around making ridiculous statements about OSes that I don't even know about, let alone use.

I don't expect too many windoze shills to know much about Linux or Apple beyond the FUD they spew here.

@Justin071894 Totally agree. I haven't bothered to upgrade my Vista machines to Win 7 and I still think it's the right move. The only way MS is going to move everyone forward to a future 21st century operating system is by starting to cut support for ancient 20th century code. This move will begin to establish a precedent for future moves toward a slimmer, more secure, self-repairing operating system.

@Justin071894 I think it's kinda silly, they allowed IE8 to run on XP, so why not IE10 on Vista?

  • Vista's garbage, anyway
So I don't blame them from running away from it. Probably the 'smartest' thing they'll do all year.
