No, your AT&T iPhone 4 case/bumper won't fit your Verizon iPhone 4!

Summary: Yesterday Verizon announced its very own iPhone 4. Externally, it's almost identical to the AT&T iPhone 4 ... except it's not 100% identical.

My inbox has attracted quite a lot of emails about this so I think a post is in order.

Yesterday Verizon announced its very own iPhone 4. Externally, it's almost identical to the AT&T iPhone 4 ... except it's not 100% identical.

In order to make the handset work on Verizon's CDMA network, Apple had to redesign the antenna. The antenna redesign has meant that the mute switch and the volume buttons on the side of the phone have been moved down a few millimeters. Just a few millimeters, but just enough to ensure that existing bumpers, cases and skins won't fit the Verizon iPhone.

OK, you might get lucky and manage to stretch the rubber a little to make it fit, or perform an operation on your existing case to make the mute switch hole a little bigger, or you might just live with having the mute switch covered. Or maybe you'll just leave your iPhone 4 nekkid. Whatever you choose to do, don't be caught out by this small design change.

  • So what. Apple's more then happy to sell you a new bumper

    it wouldn't surprise me at all to find out those changes where Apple's idea.

      Sounds like the redesign (for the antenna) is the reason for the differences noted. But feel free to make it into a plot, by that Evil company Apple, to bilk the customers. After all if it contains Apple, it should be a negative comment.

      Forget Apple. This change has Trilateral Commission and Illuminati written all over it.

      • Have to agree with you.

        @donniebnyc@...
        I had originally thought SPECTRE, but the Illuminati makes more sense.

      • I'd go with SPECTRE

        @donniebnyc@...
At first I thought they may be in cohoots with Hydra, but too subtle for them (they're too "in your face" with their approach), but it does have all the subtleties of a SPECTRE operation.

The Illuminati? Too small time for them. Getting the iPhone on Verizon would be something that would be in their best interest, but bumper sales? Nah.

        @donniebnyc@... Time to call Mack Bolan and Phoenix Force to investigate and irradicate the true meaning of the differing phone.

      @John Zern, did you notice btw, that the earphone jack is just slightly fatter from that of iphone3? I don't know how it is relevant to the antennagate, but it wont fit the audio socket in my PC anymore.

  • So, was the antenna redesign really to "make it work on CDMA", or...

    is this the fix to 4's antenna that Apple wasn't going to recall and do back in August?

    Is the "In order to make the handset work on Verizon?s CDMA network, Apple had to redesign the antenna." bit just Apple clearing items off it's 'to-do' list?

  • hahahaha

    Next thing you will hear about is the usb cable won't work between iPhone4 AT&T and iPhone4 VZW cases. Just like they did between 3/4 cases... I'd like to meet the guy that approved this change.

      Really, you are surprised that iPhone 3 cases would not fit the 4? And you seem to think there is some plot behind this? How often do you see redesigned products that are exactly the same as the previous version? Wouldn't really be a redesigned product would it?

    I think it's a plot by Cobra Command we need G.I Joe on this.

    But anywho. I'll just get a new case and toss out my old one making more trash and blame it on tech upgrades and my kids kids grandkids will have to move to a new planet.

      No need for all that. When you hawk your old iPhone on eBay, just add the words "Case included".
