Nokia cuts smartphone prices in an attempt to halt declining sales

Summary: As it makes the transition to being a Windows Phone OEM, Nokia is cutting prices of its smartphones in order to buoy sales, according to industry sources speaking to Reuters.

As it makes the transition to being a Windows Phone OEM, Nokia is cutting prices of its smartphones in order to buoy sales, according to industry sources speaking to Reuters.

According to the sources, Nokia is cutting the price of the flagship N8 model, the multimedia C7 and the business handset E6 by 15%. Other handsets see a smaller cut.

"There are no very big cuts per model, but the scale -- across the portfolio -- has not been seen for a very, very long time."

Nokia has no comment on specific price cuts, but did say that price changes were part of normal business.

It's not all bad news for Nokia - Rumor has it that the company is getting $11.50 from Apple for each iPhone sold thanks to a lucrative patent deal.

There's never been a better time to pick up a Nokia smartphone.

  • Device profit erosion is the always the beginning of the end.

    Sad. :-(

    • Why is it sad?

      @Bruizer
      Nokia deserves to die. They can't compete in a fair, open, capitalist market then they should go bankrupt and stop stealing developers away from better platforms like iOS.

      I'm HAPPY with this!! YEAH!!!

      @Bruizer It isn't going to help. They are still extremely expensive.

    • Not really. Why would anyone want to get a Nokia today

      @Bruizer
      with an "on the way out Symbian" OS when others are right around the corner with WP7?

      Look at the Verizon iPhone - sales not up near expectations as alot of people assumed that the iPhone 5 would be out in June. now it's Sept, so just wait 60 more days, get the latest.

  • Apple will have killed Nokia!!! YEAH!!!!

    This is awesome!! No one can compete with Apple on quality so they try to compete on price. But when they do that, they lose money on every handset sold. Nokia will be bankrupt soon!! YEAH!!!!!

      At $11.50 for every iPhone sold, they might be able to head off bancruptcy at least for a few days.

        @WebSiteManager - I have wondered if Microsoft was slowly killing off Nokia to lessen the price of a take over. They would love to have that patent deal with Apple

    At least they have WP7 to pick up their lost sales too bad it won't happen til the 3rd quarter.

  • Not to buoy sales/share, just to clear out obsolete inventory.

    There won't be any buoying sales until 2012. But they do have better build quality and channels than apple so once they get the WP os that's also better than apples IOS they'll recover just fine in a couple years. RIM on the other hand is dead, they just don't know it yet. They will make a wonderful business school case study on snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

  • They're in transition.

    They, like RIM, sat on their laurels too long, refused to acknowledge emerging trends, refused to innovate, and flat out confused developers and users with platform strategy (Maemo? Meego? Symbian? Win7?).
    I just hope Elop's grand Windows strategy works out and they have enough cash to tide them through the next couple of years till they start making really innovative products like they used to 10 years ago.

    The way I see it, when it comes to phone operating systems, there's iOS, Android, and WP. And then there's the rest.

    Quite frankly, "the rest" just don't cut it anymore. There's no money to be made there, as there are no users there.

    I own an N8 its a great bit of kit, still worth buying. If Nokia are getting money for every iphone/ipad already sold and ongoing, I can't see how they'll have a problem its pure profit
