NVIDIA confirms Fermi retail name - GeForce GTX 480 and GeForce GTX 470

By | February 2, 2010, 8:01am PST

NVIDIA has confirmed the retail names of the next-generation Fermi graphics processors.

Two names have been confirmed:

  • GeForce GTX 480
  • GeForce GTX 470

Both of these GPUs will be based on the Fermi GF100 chip.

It’s an odd move because this means that there won’t be any high-end cards in the GeForce 3xx lineup. However, given that the 3xx series is made up of rebranded cards and GPUs, it’s not that much of a surprise that NVIDIA wouldn’t want to taint its new cards with that past.

i m still using 9400GT which works for me...
well this guys will keep on climbing the ladder.
to an end user, you may not be able to make out much difference regarding media playback & games.
So this only causes more confusion & later makes us think that "the later the better"
so yeah I would agree to @CobraA1

That's basically the whole GPU industry these days. It's the way "fabless" works. nVidia and ATI just make the design and pass it on to the people who really make the chips.
