Your opportunity to be the first to splash out thousands of dollars on a keyboard ... one Optimus Maximus OLED keyboard has found its way onto eBay.

Optimus Maximus OLED keyboard on sale - on eBay!

The bidding currently stands at over $1,300 - an insane price for a keyboard (and fast approaching the $1,600 that they keyboard can be pre-ordered for from Art Lebedev).  Oddly enough, Art Lebedev still aren't shipping the keyboards yet - current ETA is mid February, so it's odd to see one on the bay first.

My guess is that this item will top several thousand before the bidding ends in six days.  Sure, an OLED keyboard sounds like a great idea, but the price is just way too high.

Anyone interested in an overpriced keyboard?  Alternatively, feel free to take a stab at how much this will eventually go for.

    • don't forget labour, brand, and wow factor...

really, those are were almost all the money is made on these things...

you spend over a hundred dollars on $20 worth of material for the high-end running shoes... but it's the name and perceived value that they're charging you for.

They want to get what you're willing to pay, elsewise, they lose out on profits. and Business at the end of the day is about the bottom line... (only problem is when companies don't think long term for their bottom line, but that's another rant)

the price is also high to overcome the huge R&D investments that would've been made with these... the costs of designing it, of prototyping it, or developing the drivers for it...

  • RE: Optimus Maximus OLED keyboard on sale - on eBay!

It's a great idea but its over priced. In the 80's my dad started selling computers. I was 5 years old when I figured out what a monitor was and figured out what the keyboard was and I wondered why the two weren't merged. 25 years later and we finally have this. I want one but I just hope alternatives are being made. One size does not fit all, neither does one price.

Just imagine what the image of a maximus OLED keyboard in toast would go for.

    Seriously, this price is insanity.

  • For that kind of money, I'll buy a Sony 11" OLED display

For that kind of money, I'll buy a Sony 11" OLED display which is a lot nicer.

  • RE: Optimus Maximus Kbd is $462.27?

Art Lebedev's site shows $462.27 for the price? Am I missing something?

    • Missing the gotcha...

That $462 price tag is for a keyboard with only ONE active button. If you get the keyboard with the full range (113 keys), that sucker's $1564 and change.

  • Huh...?

Odd - the link you posted to the ebay auction expired - with NO bids at $1.00... After checking, it does seem that the seller had another auction for the same keyboard - and that one, at last count, was over $1750...

    • Yep ...

      ... there's a new auction now.

  • New technology prices

OLED technology is just beginning to reach the volume-manufacturing stage. This keyboard has been a design concept for years and is just now beginning its entry to mass market. Much like the auto industry's $M "concept cars", buying what is essentially still a prototype is for people with deep pockets.

As this technology progresses, and it is within a year or two of doing so, you will see rapid declines in the product prices as OLEDs realize discounts from high-volume manufacturing.

This keyboard is a fascinating and useful concept, but I don't see it replacing standard keyboards until its price drops below $200. I want one, but until its price fits my wallet, I won't be buying one anytime soon.
