Details are emerging that Sony's PlayStation 3 games console might not be backward compatible with some games designed for the earlier PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games console.

The problem affects about 200 PSone and PS2 games and issues range from audio problems to the games not playing at all.  I've no details on titles affected or whether this problem affect all or just some PS3's.  [Updated: Nov 14, 2006 @ 9:05 am] Affected games are believed to include Gran Turismo and Final Fantasy.

There's a core difference between the PS3 and the Xbox - with the Xbox Microsoft took the route of providing software-based backward comparability.  With the PS3, Sony chose the most costly hardware route.  While Microsoft could remotely update the software contained in the Xbox to add and improve backward compatibility, Sony might be stuck having to replace consoles.[Updated: Nov 14, 2006 @ 9:05 am] Sony is to update affected consoles via online upgrades  This isn't going to be disastrous for Sony, but I'm sure they could have done without this kind of problem, especially with such a strategic product as the PlayStation 3.

How important would backward compatibility be to you?  Would this put you off buying an early version of the PS3?

[Updated: Nov 15, 2006 @ 2:05 pm] Kaz Hirai, president and chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment America has said that Sony will issue firmware upgrades to improve compatibility

"We are aiming for perfect compatibility. Our goal is 100 percent compatibility," he said in an interview. "We are trying to get there as quickly as possible."

  • Sony Needs to Ensure this is Done right!

As an avid fan of video games both Xbox and PS2, Sony shoul dbe sure they don't cause us to have to go rebuy games. I am sure they will get this right. They have no choice.
  • I hate to say it...

But when it's 200 titles over the thousands they have.. That's pretty good.

Microsoft had a smaller margin on the XBOX, and with going up to XBOX 360 80% of the games wouldn't (and probably still don't) play.
    • I guess it depends on the games ...

... and on how popular they are.

      • Considering that . . .

one of the titles listed was FINAL FANTASY, that's a premiere title for the PS and Sony, and to have them unplayable on the PS3 . . . I don't need to say more.
  • The list I read is really sad

The tiny list at the PS3 website that you really have to hunt to find as well as other articles I read imply the list is well over 200 titles and closer to 500 titles, which in the American market is nearly 20% of all titles and that list could get even bigger. All 3 of my teenage sons have many of their favorite games on that Sony PS3 website list and swear it will be years before they even consider getting the PS3 because of it and other glitches. Remember the first release of the PS2? Overheating was a major issue and is now back to haunt the PS3 as well. I think Sony once again rushed this thing out onto the public to make some quick capital and it will come back to bite them once again.
  • List? What Stinking List?

    Anybody got a link?
  • Does it matter?

I wont be buying a PS3 but not because of the backward compatibility thing, if I'm being honest out of the hundreds of people I know not a single one has ever bothered actually playing there old games on a new console. Why would anyone pay all that money for a next gen console just to play last gen games? Why not just play them on your old console, or better still buy some new games.
