Sony has released a mandatory software update (3.42) that patches the recent jailbreak of the system.

This posted was posted on the official PS3 blog by John Koller, Sony's director of Hardware Marketing:

Hi everyone! A minor update to your PS3 system is now available via system software update v3.42 that includes additional security features. For more details and instructions on how to update the system software for the PS3 system, please visit the PS3 System Updates page.

Early reports state that this patches the PS3Jailbreak and related open source derivatives. After all, once the jailbreak went open source, Sony's weapon of choice against hackers - lawsuits - are of limited use.

The choice is simple - jailbreak and be able to run all sorts of unsigned code, or continued access to PlayStation Network/PlayStation Store. Either/Or, not both ...

    How long do people want to give it before this is cracked as well? Two weeks, I'm betting.

    Oh, and I have to say that if people STARTED FILING LAWSUITS.... it wouldn't be 'either/or'. It would be BOTH, since the DMCA and the whole IDEA of DRM stomps on the whole "You buy it, it's yours to do with as you wish!"

    I can understand sending these things out for hacking attempts that can break games or allowing you to punk games. Not just so you cannot back up your games and play those backups!

    • You really should go out and buy a clue before being let loose on here lol

      @Lerianis10 What, exactly, would you file a lawsuit for? Sony have not stopped anyone from using the jailbreak on v3.4.1, so if you want to hack your PS3 so you can "backup your games" (read: run pirate games) then please go right ahead. You own the system, you do what you like with it, including running pirated (backed up) software.
      However...
      The PSN belongs to Sony, not you. Sony have the right to say what version your system should be to connect to THEIR servers. So that's their choice, with their servers and their network; do you think any honest gamer will argue with them...I don't.

        @Scrat
        I think the concept of "jailbreaking" is less about running pirated "backup" games and more about running indie games that haven't been "licensed" or given the Seal of Approval or whatever by Sony or Apple or whatnot. It's almost like if back in the days of VHS, and you had a Sony brand VCR that would only play Sony licensed movies, and nothing from Disney or Warner Bros. or wherever.

  • WTF!

    When $ony picked Linux and GPL, that gave anyone the right to modify the code as they seem fit and run on the system of their choice. Period!

      @Linux Geek As usual, you're wrong. Other OS gave people the tools to put Linux on their systems if they wanted to; they didn't adhere to the GPL for that, all they did was open up the tool. When they took it away, they were within their rights as stated by their Terms of Service. Doesn't make it any less crappy, but Sony, at no time, was forced to adhere to the GPL because they never at any time specifically put Linux on their systems.

    This article said it good, PS3 Jailbreak is perfect compatible with all the games. My freinds recommend me to buy the PS3 Jailbreak from chinaechos-com/usb-ps3-jailbreak-worlds-first-ps3-modchip-plug-and-play-p-2732.html, and we use it very satisfied.
