PSN users - How do you feel about the continued outage?

Sony’s PlayStation Network (PSN) has been down since the 20th of April after it was hacked by attackers unknown. It’s still down, leaving millions of PS3 gamers without access to multiplayer gaming and other online services.

How long can this continue before gamers start migrating to other platforms?

Well, there are already indications that people are trading in their PS3 for Xbox consoles already. Here’s a piece on DailyTech:

Now, retail numbers are beginning to show the customer’s frustrations. According to different video game retailers around the world, gamers have been trading their PS3’s for Xbox 360’s at an increasing rate, and have even switched pre-orders of certain game titles from PS3 to Xbox 360.

Multiplayer gaming is immensely popular (people like me who mostly play single-player are like the dinosaurs - a dying species), and for many not being able to play multiplayer and get access to trophies and achievements and so on renders the console next to useless. So rather than allow it to gather dust, some are selling it in order to finance a new console purchase.

And this effect is not limited to the console itself. Game sales are also being affected:

In the week ending April 16, Xbox 360 had 49 percent of the sales while PS3 had 37 percent, and the week after, Xbox 360 stayed at the top with 46 percent and PS3 at 34 percent. The numbers became more obvious in the week ending April 30 with Xbox 360 at 52 percent and PS3 at 26 percent, and last week with Xbox 360 at 49 percent and PS3 at 21 percent.

This is bad for Sony because consumer confidence in the platform is being eroded, it’s also bad for the gaming and accessories industry as they are seeing a decline in sales. The holiday spending season is still quite a few months away, but customers can have long memories so this might have long-term fall-out.

There are winners here though. Microsoft, for example, with its Xbox 360 console is already enjoying buoyed sales thanks to the Kinect. The Sony breach and financial data leackage, combined with the ongoing outage of PSN is likely to bring new customers to the Redmond giant.

Where there are losers, here are winners.

RE: PSN users - How do you feel about the continued outage?

I've been using my Xbox 360 a whole lot more. I was a little bummed b/c I only have an Xbox live silver (the free one) subscription; and I couldn't use it to watch netflix. I could play online for free (dusted off left for dead etc.). I've since been using my WII for netflix and Xbox for online gaming. My hope is that sony rewards loyalty and patience.
Not happy at all but it will be back up someday i hope lol, Im not about to trade in my PS3, the PSN network is free online gaming and I believe the XBox is a pay service. why switch for that.
@nascar13@... My concern is when it actually does come back online, will it still be free?
@statuskwo5 It will most likely remain a free service. If it is going to be a pay-to-play service, I imagine they'd want to announce that before putting the network back up. Could be why it is taking so long, though.
@nascar13@... yea u say sony is free, but when they come back did u know they are going to start charging like xbox360, its not going to be free anymore.
@INIEIP - i very highly dought that because the free ps3 game play is the only thing that gets people to pick ps3 over xbox
I would rather wait a little longer, and be safe, than to rush it back online.
@Rick_K
Couple of my friends are strong PS fans. Well right now both of them feel like they are dejected. I don't know whats the matter it is after all a gaming console and network. I have XBox, XBL and I wouldn't get bothered a fraction of millimeter if XBL gets down. I just don't care, because there are more and better things than technology in life to enjoy.
I mostly play single-player games. So this is not a huge issue for me.
Sony's PR nightmare is a good thing in a way. Companies will pay more attention to user data security.

As for winners and losers, both PS3 and XBox are getting obsolete quick. Unless there is a next-gen console, it may be irrelevant.
I'd happily quit gaming alltogether before i bought a Crapbox 360, period.

@HotVWGTi -Crapbox? We, the gaming community at large would be better off without biased, tweenie fanboys as well. I have both and they are comparable across the board. Literally, great systems both. You do us all a disservice, and make all gamers look like whiny corporate tools. Real gamers own every console they can, and enjoy the hobby and entertainment. Only a fanboy with a pathetically fragile ego would make such childish blanket statements, including words like "xbot, crapbox, Psh*t3, Sony Poserstation",etc. Its pedantically childish, and got stale way back in the bit wars of the 90s (NES-SEGA days).
@Animus et Illuminat obviously you have your ****** ass tongue too far up Obama's equalality ass. **** XBOX 4 LIFE!! you've also proven how ignorant you, as true gamers will be loyal to the company they see as superior, owning all systems only means you need to climb out your momma's basement and get a life little boy. the fact that you used the word "tweenie" shows your age is far lower than required purchase "mature" rated games with your mommy's permission.

@HotVWGTi- You spelled "equality" wrong kid. And what the hell does Obama have to do with anything? Are you trying to equate corporate allegiances and gaming with the civil rights movement? What?! You must be very young if your warped little mind draws a connection there. Anyway, your farsical statements are exactly what I meant by " pedantically childlish remarks". Im a 45 year old homeowner here in San Diego, have a small business and do quite well. I enjoy gaming as a hobby, and have for the last 25-30 years (since monochrome and command lines, I still have my PONG console from 79). While your ridiculous retort does not deserve a reply, I will reiterate that Fanboys like yourself make ALL gamers look bad. A whiny little punk like yourself, who feels the need to lash out like this at strangers shows how weak and fragile your ego, and thereby your argument truly is. Enjoy living with your momma, tell her I said hello.
@Animus et Illuminat

I agree with you except for the consoles - REAL gamers use PCs wink We prefer hi-res graphics, no auto-aim and a sophisticated UI.

As to outages - it happens. Would I consider moving to console if Steam and Battle.net went down? I don't think so.

@HotVWGTi ummm- owning all systems means- i have a well paying job- pay my mortage - pay my bills- and in my spare time- i entertain myself. ill b honset here- i no longer own my xbox- id rather my ps3 (personal prefence) and of course my gaming rig (PC) but cmon- truth is xbox live is way better online than psn- but u get WHAT U DONT PAY FOR-its free. i will admit im a ps3 "fanboy" to some extent- but facts are facts- each system has their pro- cons-
you might laugh- but i own a ps3 soley cuz of the controller- guess im old school lol- comfort zone thing

@manolii -Well said sir. And I might as well throw out a plug for a great gaming community for us old school gamers www.dadsofgaming.com
These guys are great, and quite "mature", as we all remember gaming back when controllers had one button and a stick or a trackball! Its not old, its "classic"!
I don't care at all. I don't play any PS3 games online. I play only 1 player games such as Resident Evil 5, Mirror's Edge, etc. I also play Rock Band 3 with my friends in the room with me.

PSN doesn't affect me in the slightest, except that I can't buy new songs for Rock Band 3 lately!
@Droid101 THEN STHU! dude if it doesnt affect you don't go running your mouth and pissing other people off, we dont just play games online, some download music, others watch netflix. think before you type.
and Sony will not be putting out a new system for at least 4 years. there's no need to replace the PS3 with a "PS4". the hardware inside the PS3 out performs 360 with ease. one hiccup with PSN and all the noobs run to 360, good. i hate all the ignorant 360 fanboys that get on Sony's blog just to trash the PS3. Just remember the 360 still has a far higher fail rate than PS3!!
@HotVWGTi NO NO NO, we need to have noobs! if there are no noobs there's no balance in the Playstation Universe! no noobs equals no people to rage at on COD, it takes away the whole point of the game, that is to just sit there screaming at people who cant even hear you...

@AboveAverageJoe -In retrospect, I could have said the same to that raging fanboy and saved myself about 10 paragraphs! In short, well said sir.
@HotVWGTi how much sony pays you??? look at how u sound ignorant homie, ps3 is a better system but xbox online is better then sony`s. u hear anyone from xbox complaining about down time????

@INIEIP -Agreed sir.

@HotVWGTi -Alright, where to begin with this idiot.

1. The hardware configurations of the 360 and PS3 are comparable, period. The games, online services and features are nearly identical. Anyone who says otherwise is a raging fanboy or does not own both, and is in no position to compare the two.

2. Ignorant Fanboys- I think you got that covered all by yourself buddy. You are the POSTERCHILD for ignorant fanboys. Laughable, nonsensical statements, pedantic opinions framed as facts, and so frail in your arguments that you must lash out at strangers with swearing and typographical errors. Pathetic.

3. Failure rate- How about some research fanboy kid? You do realize the failure rate of the 360 is only %6 higher than the PS3 right? As someone who has had 2 YLODs and 3 RRODs I can speak from experience. Heres another tip dummy, how about you cite your info like this:
http://www.examiner.com/xbox-360-in-national/ps3-vs-xbox-360-failure-rates

In short, you can STFU and get a life child. Us real gamers are contributing positively to the discussion at hand.
Well my credit card that was tied to my PSN account got closed after Visa received a fraud alert...thanks Sony.
@jmiller1978 Sorry to hear that. But that's what PSN cards are for, man. I would never put my credit card out on any network.

@jmiller1978 -Learning experience for us all bro.
I feel (hope) this will make game companies think more about the single player experience of a game for a change, people are trading their not only because of the lack of online but because there's no depth to the single player portion of these new games coming out before I got online I played Dragon Age and after I beat the game I couldn't go back for unfinished sid-quests unless I was online, some companies focus so much on online play that the campaigns are usually 3-6 hrs long with no replay value, I just hope game industries take this as a sign that online isn't everything
At least we still have Bethesda

There is no way in hell that I would trade our PS3 for any other console-much less the xbox. We will just wait no matter how long it takes-my only gripe is the lack of info. from Sony/PS3, I just wish they would be a bit specific as to EXACTLY what they are doing and the progress of it.

I can't say it has annoyed me as it has. But for the love of god I wish they hurry up and get it back online.

I have had to resort to playing on Xbox Live. I had to pay for 1 month gold to just to get some online gaming. All I played was the Gears Of War 3 beta witch was ok. But there is noting I want to play on the 360. I only have it for exclusives and there has not been many of them lately.

But I think I found a alternative. Battlefield Free2Play for the PC. Reminds me a lot of Battlefield MC2 on PS2. God I loved playing that online. So this should keep me going until PSN is back up. Want to do some co op on Portal 2.

im sick of people defending sony like they did nothing wrong..i play online games,i bought my system to play online, and the fact that i cnt do that,i ask myself whats the point of having my ps3 anymore, the fact that they keep lying to us about when it will be back up is a disgrace..
@rayjae Playstation, it does everything but.... online gaming. AND TO EVERYONE WHO READS THIS POST-- INTERNET PRIVACY IS A LIE, IF SOMEONE WANTED TO, THEY COULD HAVE ALL OF MY PERSONAL INFORMATION IN LESS THAN A DAY. FACEBOOK, BEST PRIVACY EVER! WELL THEN HOW CAN SCHOOL OFFICIALS GET YOUR STATUS AND MESSAGES?!?!?!?!?!? THERE IS NO ROOM FOR PERSONAL SPACE ANYMORE! GET OVER IT!
so your ps3 is worthless cause u have to wait a month or so to be able to play online again>? thats some real long term thinking there.....
Frustrated, but waiting... waiting...and waiting...Never would I switch to a toy like X-box. Im waiting for BF3 anyway...Fall cant get here fast enough!!!

@visualimpacts AGREED!!!!!!!!!- (about BF3 and fall not getting hear fast enuff)
It is obvious that Sony had their arses handed to them, and they do not have the balls 8~ to admit that they are really a minor player out here. Same goes for their DVD copy protection schemes... cracked in 24 hours. Anybody want a ps3 cheap?
Also, I play all my FPS games on PC. No need to deal with putting in/taking out discs, or deal with any crap.

I don't understand people who play FPS games on console.
@Droid101 im with you one that one- but majority of peepl cant afford a good gaming rig

+ -
@Droid101 -Agreed. My rig is sweet, but needs to upgrade once again to make ready for BF3! Understand though, for simple ease of play and ultra low maintenence, consoles make sense for many people. That said, a mouse and keyboard IS undoubtedly more precise for FPS's. I for one think the next gen should be upgradable, more like a pc/console hybrid. Graphics cards, Ram, CPU should all be upgradable. Not only would this extend the life of the product, but it could also be a more customizable experience. Something PC gamers already enjoy. Are you listening Sony and MS?! Make it happen!

This was my response to Sony:

Some time has passed, deadlines have ended and promises have not been kept; mistakes have put at risk my credit data, you have deftly eluded giving satisfactory information and yet, you still ask for our trust.

Bad things happen, of course, we all know that. Sites get hacked and there is just so much you can do about it. But you have practically kept us in the dark regarding the two most important issues in this ordeal: you did not inform us in time about the data theft or, come on, at least the possibilityand you have made a mockery of us evading our fair requests of information in regard to at least a guess or gross estimate of when the network would be back online.

I dont blame you at all for anything but the two issues stated above.

I am 46 years old and have owned only Sony consoles since they came out: 4 Playstations, 3 PS2 and currently 3 PS3 and 2PSP I have bought over 350 games (and never have played xbox)

Yet for the first time I feel resentful.

You ask for my trust, but I have to tell you, trust is a principle which either exists or not; just like virginity. It cannot be met halfway. It takes a long time to nurture and build trust, and just a fraction of a second to obliterate it.

Will I turn to other entertainment system? I dont know yet, but for the first time I think you have given us reason to doubt you and to start looking for alternatives not because of the system shutdown, but because of how you treated us afterwards. There might be people who dont care much about how they have been treated by your deride updates, but I do. I've treated you with respect and loyalty always but you have just lost that privilege.
@exrx YOU PUT YOUR CREDIT CARD INFO IN SONY'S HANDS! LMFAO WHAT ARE YOU, SPECIAL?!

What irritates me more than anything with this situation is the fact that Sony is not being honest about what's happening with the service. They're being extremely silent, which gives me the impression that they are being dishonest. I have personally purchased a lot of DLC and games that are completely unusable during this outage, and I don't feel like I was properly informed about the fact that these softwares would not work if the PSN were to suffer such an outage. I thought when you bought something that meant you owned it, and you didn't have to "authenticate" it each and every time you wanted to use it. Frankly, I'm disgusted. I suffer from no delusions that Microsoft's offering is any less unreliable and under-supported. I'm just all around disgusted, and I will definitely be thinking long and hard before I invest in any further gaming products from Sony.

I'm not so upset about not playing online. I hate games like Call of Duty anyway.
But there are several games and dlc I'd like to buy from the store and that has been frustrating.

I already have a 360 though and it has been unplugged for over a year now.
I just don't like the quality or the games.
i enjoy the occasional RPG from the early days of 360, but that's about it. Live has no appeal.

I'll stick with PS3 unless Sony pulls the plug itself.
I would never trade in my PS3 for the 360. PS3 has titles that the 360 does not, and blow 360 exclusives out of the water.

Metal Gear Solid
Uncharted
Killzone
SOCOM

Just to name a few.

People get too caught up in online gaming today, campaign modes are still extremely rewarding and fun. Of course, many online console gamers started playing games only recently, not experiencing those epic campaigns that predate online console gaming.

I'm definitely pissed about the outage. It's pretty embarrassing for Sony that some unknown hacker(s) managed to do this to a brandname like Sony.

But to trade it in for the 360 simply because it's servers aren't temporarily down would be plain stupid. Like I said, I enjoy the PS3 and its exclusives a lot more.

I think I can wait however much longer I need to wait. In the meantime, I'm thoroughly enjoying going through MGS2/3, GTA:SA, and all of the SOCOMs on the PS2.

@daveac -To each their own. Trading in a PS3 for a 360 is a bad idea. I'd suggest people either hold tight, or keep their PS3 and pick up an xbox as well. Best of both worlds. Xbox has some great exclusives too. But Im not a fanboy, I just love the hobby. I also still play my SNES and Turbographx 16! Long story short, trading one for the other is kinda weak. Having both is good, and having none is a f*cking tragedy!
I've been using my Xbox 360 a whole lot more. I was a little bummed b/c I only have an Xbox live silver (the free one) subscription; and I couldn't use it to watch netflix.
