Seagate Technology has announced that it is to acquire Samsung's loss-making hard drive business for $1.4 billion.

Sales are in decline and the sector is facing stiff competition from flash drives and solid-state hard drives (SSDs), so we've seen a few shake-ups lately. A month ago Western Digital announced that it was to acquire Hitachi's hard drive unit for $4.3 billion. this latest takeover leaves three players in the storage - Seagate, Western Digital and Toshiba.

This merger gives Seagate around 40% of the storage market, with Western Digital picking up about 50% and leaving Toshiba with around 10%.

Given the numbers, Toshiba is ripe for the picking ...

So, how do you feel about your choice of storage providers collapsing down to three?

  • To be correct, Seagate did not buy, but merged Samsung's HDD unit ...

... since Samsung will have Seagate's shares and a director seat.

A matter of being a grammar Nazi, it's about expecting people to communicate according to the rules. If you expect to be taken seriously and to have and credibility, you need to be able to communicate correctly and effectively.
If not, then people assume that you are lazy and unwilling to follow rules, which they assume bleed into other areas of your life as well.

I just hope Seagate don't get rid of the excellent technology Samsung drives provide - they have been exceptionally reliable, quiet and fast for my machines over the past 7 or 8 years after I moved away from IBM drives, which forever failed!

  • Considering Seagate's recent history...

...with their quality, I can only expect that this is going to be a bad thing for Samsung.
Maybe Seagate will adopt Samsung's quality practices, but I seriously doubt it.

  • Monopolies

Imagine the collusion that could take place with only 2 manufacturers. Choice provides competitive prices and innovation. Imagine the world with only 2 car manufacturers (or 2 chip makers :) ). Who regulates these practices worldwide??
