Sony announces two tablets to land this fall

Summary: Sony has announced two new Android 3.0 ‘Honeycomb’ tablets scheduled to land this fall.

Sony has announced two new Android 3.0 ‘Honeycomb’ tablets scheduled to land this fall.

Here’s a video:

What’s to say? Well, at this point not much. We have codenames for the tablets (the one that looks like a tablet is the S1, the fold-open one the S2), but then Sony also refer to them as ‘Sony Tablets’ which suggests that they may be sold under a different name. Also, all material released on them so far makes it clear that both the design and specification (and I guess the name) is subject to change.

Both devices seem to be targeting the those wanting access to portable entertainment, web browsing, email, viewing videos, games, books and so on. The tablets will also have access to networked content via Sony’s Qriocity music and video service (you know, one of Sony’s services that’s been down for days due to ‘external intrusion’) as well as PlayStation Suite and the Sony Reader Store.

So it’s a little hard to get excited about the news that a couple of tablets are going to be released later this year … meh.

S1 -- nice design, but is that enough to raise the competitive bar for entering an already competitive market?

S2 -- very interesting -- if pocketable, this is has more utilitarian distinction than an IPad, but of course the devil in is the details and the polish. And how does one hold it in one hand easily, unfolded? (The hinge has got to be well designed, so it doesn't come loose.) And if there's a camera, how can one use it unfolded? Some are going to whine about the black separator between the screens when viewing a website with both displays... etc...

Another thing: Because of the PSP association with Sony, if these are marketed as toys, it might keep the business and older adult demographic away. (IPads are used as toys too, but since they don't have that "child's toy" connotation, it becomes a cool-chic "stealth toy" for adults and business people.) Therefore, I'm guessing these might be marketed under the Vaio brand.

Let Face it SONY has to be one of the worest companies in the world!!! they will probably have prpriotory ports fo memory etc and any service they do always fails and just like when i bought there MP3 walkman, a year later there store shut down so you could not by music from them any more, not to mention sync your device. you would be lucky if the software would install correctly let alone run.

The device will look good when released but will look dated within 3 months of release, like man many of SONY's devices. Build quality is usually BAD!
