Sony PS3 update bricks consoles
Summary: The latest PlayStation 3 update released by Sony is causing a barrage of complaints from users.
The latest PlayStation 3 update released by Sony is causing a barrage of complaints from users.
The 3.21 firmware upgrade, which amongst other things removes the "Install Other OS" feature, seems to be bricking some older consoles. Other users complain that the update doesn't complete properly, that certain controllers no longer work, that Internet connectivity is slowed down to a snail's pace, HDMI not working at some resolutions, and inability to connect to the PlayStation Network.
My advice, if you can avoid this update, do so.

Guess I'm lucky...
Even the current update went smoothly with no side effects. Fingers crossed to continued luck.

Brick...
Ya, they have no right to complain.
was advertised with at point-of-sale, and then a few years later whoever
made it comes up to you and says "you can no longer use the features that
you paid us for", you should simply roll over and beg for more. Only a
freak/terrorist/retard would actually dare have a problem with this.
I was being sarcastic..
sony really disapointed me
No problems here
Upgraded the a 250GB HDD immediately after purchase for $80.
Update went fine. I backed up and reformatted my drive after the update because I had once used Linux and the partition was sitting there stagnant. I had to do it AFTER the update though, because I wanted to sync my trophies, but couldn't log onto PSN to do that (they can't be locally backed up). So I was stuck in a catch-22. I did the update, then synced my trophies, did my backup (which took a LONG time), formatted the drive, then did a restore (again, taking a LONG time). Everything is working fine.
Now if only that would replace that POS Netfront browser with Opera and get Flash 10.1 supported by the NVIDIA RSX chip (Opera has experience with embedded browsers).

RE: Sony PS3 update bricks consoles
The first being that Sony sold my PS3 because it could play PS2 games. Too bad they didn't mention that they screwed up the graphics so they look worse than what's on a PS1. (I'm sure this was done intentionally to encourage people to buy the PS3 editions of games instead of the PS2 versions which are still coming out)
The second being that they sold a machine that could boot to another OS, then took away that functionality. I'm glad I'm not in the E.U. There people got tax breaks because the ability of the PS3 to be sold as a computer system instead of a pure entertainment device. Do these people now owe taxes on their purchase?
The third being that their system is WAY louder than a 360 when if does anything more than just sit there. No louder with the update, just always loud when being used.
I could go on about how poorly their network "plays" despite the machine being so technically superior to anything out there. I could also go on about how the amount of system RAM, poor web browser, and lack of Flash makes is barely more than a glorified blu-ray player. Then I could even keep going about how you can connect a 250GB USB hard drive that you're not allowed to do backups to.
Or I could suffice it to say that the PS3 is worthless unless you just like paying $300-400 for a blu-ray player.

Insult to injury, I just bought and installed Bioshock 2 last night ... was sort of looking to play it at least once.
Who actually uses Linux on a PS3? Why?!?
Sony said back at E309 that they don't want to bother with Linux support and that they would focus on making the XMB OS better. That's why they took the option out of the Slim's. The PS3 isn't a general computing device. It's an entertainment device, and should be treated as such. Sony's computers fall under the VAIO brand.
PS3 is great for small (or large) Linux Clusters.
If you only buy the PS3 for the console - Sony is (oer was) losing money on each unit. They make it back with the games - but if you're JUST using it for Linux - Sony is supporting their own losses.
It's great TECH in a PS3 - and they are subsidized by SONY. So - if you like Linux, it's a great little machine.
Who of those customers play games then?
If you have a need for Power architecture, you're better suited to getting a drop-in Cell card for a workstation PC, or you probably aren't in an industry where playing games is accepted.
The only product that a consumer might want to use with Linux on a PS3 is a program by FixStars called CodecSys Personal. It accelerates video encoding using the Cell, but it's difficult to setup, and still needs a mainstream PC to run it (decent Core 2 Duo at the least - not netbooks or crap PCs). Even then, it's a stretch that any consumer would do this with their PS3, not to mention that it's $200. For the same money, you could buy a GeForce graphics card with CUDA support and get a copy of one of several CUDA-enabled consumer-friendly video encoding programs that works even faster.
Update: FixStars stopped selling CodecSys Personal. I'm not surprised. I bet they probably sold maybe 5 copies in total anyway.
Sorry, Linux is FOSS. And you just said in another thread that everyone..
New Technoloy has Enabled access to the GPU!
MESA API library programmers have developed an
OpenGL wrapper to access the GPU inside of Linux
on PS3. Sony got worried about the fact, that
HOMEBREW could take off and take away all their
hurting game sales business. Rumor is that they
hired the brilliant masterminds of the Sony BMG's
legal team involved in the RIAA suing of their own
customers! xD The FOOLS that hear
no, speak no, see no evil in themselves, only their
customers.
After Ken Kutaragi got canned (which was a major
tragedy), the new brass in the form of Howard
Ignutz Stringer and his reconstituted twin brother
as the head of Sony BMG took the company from
having one of the most respected reputations to one
of being demented loony bin trash.
He's now known as Sir Howie Stringme-me-up Please
the main Head Cheese of Sony! ... he's the reason
for all the DRM (Digital Rectal Manipulation)
pollution of the PS3, BluRay Disk (ones we didn't
need), the PS3 launch delay, killing of Homebrew,
exploding batteries, the DRM Rootkit Fiasco and
why NOBODY in their Right Mind will ever be buying
a Sony PS4!
Needless to say the Research Institutes and
Universities using PS3 for Distributed Computing
Networks are now SOL! ...the company is now
sabotaging their own users hardware by bricking
them. They are basically setting themselves up
for a class action lawsuit that Sir Sringer
Stringnutz will belosing false teeth and toupee
over! haha...
Ref: my own experience having had three PS3's
bricked due to updates. They're doing it randomly
so as to not call too much attention to this ploy.
But I had 4 PS3's in a FOLDING@HOME network!
...that'll teach me not to try and contribute to
saving mankind! ;)
You are so totally wrong, it's not funny
Read the statement by MIT.
What they're doing is using the Cell processor for software video acceleration using SPU's with multimedia instructions.
The RSX is still hidden under the hypervisor. NVIDIA instituted the requirements for Sony to block access to the GPU because of licensing rights. The GPU back then was fast, but it was only licensed for Sony to use for entertainment titles (read: games and video acceleration). Sony didn't (and probably couldn't) license Linux to use the GPU because of patent rights and license conflicts with the GPL, and why would Sony try to create two OS's for one piece of hardware?
The US Air Force for one.
Ya right
No, he really is right.

So is USAF/AFRL Buying a lot of bricks?
