Sony slashes earnings forecast by almost $1 billion!

By | October 23, 2008, 12:49pm PDT

The other day Jay Leno said that the economy was so bad that people couldn’t afford to pay attention any more. Well, the tech industry needs to pay attention to this.

Sony has just slashed its earnings forecast for the 2008 fiscal year by almost $1 billion. Sony now predicts earnings to be in the region of 150 billion yen, or $1.5 billion, down from a forecast issued in July of 240 billion yen, or $2.4 billion.

Areas that Sony predict will be down include:

  • Flat-screen TVs
  • Digital cameras
  • Video cameras

Interestingly, the company doesn’t mention games consoles.

I think that on a positive note for consumers, those with cash in their pockets should benefit from the inevitable price drops that we’ll be seeing over the next few months as companies try to coax shoppers to part with their green.

That is great! I hope they go out of business. I can't stand Sony products. They are way overpriced and too proprietary.
Their only bright spot is Linux and computing.

Yes, that is a good point, but we aren't talking about Apple here. Not to mention that they don't make TVs, DVD players, camcorders, cameras etc. Which of course all will only use the Sony memory stick, instead of a widely accepted SD card or similar. I have intentionally avoided Sony products for that reason.

That is one slimy company. It's one thing to have proprietary memory cards, but to price them at twice the price of their competitors is terrible.

They're not too bright either. I mean they're releasing their best phone, the Xperia at the end of the Windows Mobile 6 lifecycle - when everyone else is preparing for Windows Mobile 7.

Did I mention Blu-ray sucks!
