The Beatles now available through iTunes ... yawn ...

Summary: Yesterday Apple teased us with this promise ...

Yesterday Apple teased us with this promise:

What is it that we'll never forget? This:

Doesn't everyone who wants The Beatles music on their iPods already own the CDs and have already ripped them?

Maybe this paves the way for other bands that have previously been resistant to online distribution (*cough* ... AC/DC ... *cough*). Maybe.

One thing's for sure, I won't forget how lame that teaser was ...

Yawn ...

  • This was their "big" announcement?

    I borrowed my dad's Beatles CD's years ago and ripped them to MP3's. I've had them in my collection since my sophomore year of high school.

      @Cylon Centurion 0005... now that you've confessed, be prepared to reap the wrath of the RIAA. :)

      Personally, I could careless if you did or not.

  • Underwhelmed

    There were a lot of things that this announcement *could* have been which might have interested me. I will say the digital mastering sounds nice, but really it's not like this content wasn't all ready available.

  • AC DC?! Really!

    not even in the same league, for Petes sake.
    singer sounds like a Donald Duck and the guitarist is a spazz.

  • Not too compelling for me. Where's my iPad IOS 4?

    Although I used to listen to the Beatles back in the day, and quite a lot, there was only vinyl and tape - no digital anything. I might consider buying a song or album here and there, but no "box sets" for me. I suppose there are many more ardent Beatles fans who will buy much more, but I don't think it will be any kind of earth-shattering number. Then again, I could be completely full of crap. It is now November 16th, and I really, really want the iPad IOS 4 to become available. That would matter much, much more to me.

  • It's about the new generation!!

    This announcement is not cool for the old guys who have either borrowed their dad's stuff and ripped it, or for the ones that already own all that stuff. It is, however, very very cool for the generation who get all their content from iTunes (and there are a lot of them, and more every day!!) who have heard of the Beatles and now have a really easy way to discover them. Or for those who have lost their collections for some reason and want to rebuild a digital collection without accumulating CDs or vinyl, ripping it, then sticking it in the attic to collect dust.

I just think it's cool anyway. And it shows that even massive hurdles can, eventually, be overcome.

G>

  • Steve, where the HELL is iOS 4.2?? why are you wasting time on this BS??

    NO ONE CARES ABOUT THIS... GET BACK TO DOING STUFF THAT ACTUALLY MATTERS!!!

    • Clueless?

      @doctorSpoc
      You do understand that the business department which had to negotiate this licensing is different from the engineering department writing iOS4, right? You do understand that a corporation as large as Apple can do more than one thing at a time, right? Or do you want contract attorneys writing your software.

      Take a deep breath and calm down already.

    If you think the Beatles are just for oldsters, you are mistaken. Probably the two most enduring acts of that era are the Beatles and Pink Floyd.

    • who the hell cares? buy the CD and rip or torrent for free..

      @Monkeypox - this is a non-issue.. if these morons (Yoko & McCartney) are so freak'n stupid not to realize that they are leaving money on the table by not putting their stuff on iTunes or encouraging people to torrent and steal their content then so be it.. this is not something Apple should be wasting their time on..

      as i said above.. where the hell is iOS 4.2, where is iTunes streaming.. forget yoko.. you should be talking to the studios, Ping is freak'n useless with out Facebook integration, why aren't you talking to them... get the f back to work guys and stop wasting time on bs..

      it's a pop band that has almost no relevance to young people today.. this smells of Steve's ego/untouchable fruit complex..
      doctorSpoc
      • Torrent for free???

        @doctorSpoc... tell that to Jammie Thomas-Rasset. 62.5k per song. But that is the cost of free I guess.

        @doctorSpoc

        No relevance? Really...so.....then why were they the 3rd biggest selling band of 2009? And the second biggest selling band since 2000? Because they aren't relevant? Odd logic there....

  • That was it?

    I thought it was going to be something with substance, like Apple "inventing" subscription music. Of course if you guys ever do get that, you'd realize that this whole issue with 30 sec vs 90 sec previews is a non-issue since with a subscription service the whole concept of a "preview" just doesn't exist. You just listen to the whole friggin song. As many times as you want. As many songs as you want. Millions of them. All the time. Without paying anything more than your monthly. You can even have live playlists that act like charts that update with new songs every time you sync. Try that on iTunes. Ouch.

    Well, maybe next year...

        @msalzberg

        I'll post it in all the places they post this same boring Apple "news".
        Qbt
    • I get that you like that.

      @Qbt... personally I prefer to buy the music. But yes, Apple needs to get on board with the subscription service as well.

  • Losing credibility

    Apple's credibility lies in backing up their hype with amazing or at least interesting product announcements. This is neither.

    In damage to their credibility this announcement ranks with antenna-gate. How many people will ignore the next big hype?

    • Exactly right

      @mla_anderson
      Apple made a withdrawal against their brand name today. I won't forget this.

    • RE: The Beatles now available through iTunes ... yawn ...

      @mla_anderson

      Good point, I can understand Steve Jobs being excited about it because he has been chasing the Beatles for years....but it's not the 'world changing' event we were led to expect....

      I know Apple likes to mega hype things which are pretty mundane but this is ridiculous....

      I was really hoping that this wouldn't be another example of Steve Jobs shooting his mouth off
