UPDATE: Third of iPad owners have no apps ... not even Angry Birds!

By | October 22, 2010, 4:16am PDT

Summary: A third of iPad owners have never installed any apps on their iPads, according to a study carried out by Nielsen.

[UPDATE: Nielsen has owned up to a foul-up concerning the stats.]

A third of iPad owners have never installed any apps on their iPads, according to a study carried out by Nielsen.

Digging deeper, while 32% have not downloaded an app, 5% have only downloaded free apps. That still leaves a whopping 63% who have downloaded paid apps.

Of the paid apps, games lead the way, accounting for 62% of apps, with books coming in second at 54%.

There’s also an interesting breakdown of how people use their iPads compared to iPhone usage. It seems the increased screen size means that people turn to the iPad for content consumption, such as reading ebooks, watching TV shows and movies, and reading magazines. For radio, news and music people are more likely to turn to the iPhone … but the gap is small.

According to the study, 4% of US households now own tablet computers.

@jscott418 Your assertion that it's fallen on deaf ears for many iPad owners is based on what, the fact that you concluded it's a toy? Sorry to break it to you but your conclusion has pretty much zero effect on those that actually bought an iPad.

So you're saying the top two app sellers
Michael Kelly 22nd Oct 2010
account for 116% of the apps sold?

I think they trying to say 62% of iPad users have downloaded a game and 54% of them have downloaded a book.
@Michael Kelly
Is it possible that some of the users which downloaded games also downloaded books?!?
@DedaEda

Yes, that was exactly his point. Obviously the charts are showing percentages of users, but the article seems to state the charts are showing percentages of apps.

I call that "study" pure BS
wackoae 22nd Oct 2010
Maybe "paid" apps. But no apps? Nobody with a 1/4 of a working neuron would believe that BS.

You get apps already pre-installed with the device when you buy it. So saying that 1/3 does not have apps is nothing but pure BS.
@wackoae
Okay, the title is misleading, but the article does not say that 1/3 have no apps. Obviously the authors are aware that the iPad is pre-installed with apps. The article is informative.

These half baked responses with no thought of the actual article content are typical of wackoae comments.

No apps
archangel9999 22nd Oct 2010
@wackoae Maybe they rushed out and bought the thing but decided it wasn't good for much and stuck it in the corner and haven't used it - hence, no need to download apps

@archangel9999 Or maybe it means they didn't have to download any additional apps for it to do everything they bought it to do.
@wackoae It means they haven't downloaded any other apps other than the ones that come on the device.

It could mean a third of iPad owners are no longer using their iPads. Something I've been predicting since it was released.
@Loverock Davidson
Very doubtful that people would pay $500-800 for an ipad and then not use it. More likely, it means that 1/3 of users are satisfied with the many pre-installed apps and don't need more.

?
archangel9999 22nd Oct 2010
@Level Why would you assume that - there are lots of fad gadgets "got to be first" types pay good money for but then the gadget doesn't live up to their expectations based on the hype and they end up just collecting dust
@archangel9999 So what you are saying is that only those like you that post something against Apple are allowed to make assumptions? You comments are no less assumption than Level's and probably less likely to be true.
@Loverock Davidson
I know I use mine for just reading books.. for web surfing its worthless.

@Loverock Davidson It could possibly be taken like that but somehow I doubt it.
@Loverock Davidson Keep on predicting away. I rely on your predictions to always fail, since they always have. When somebody is wrong 100% of the time, it's usually an indicator of what's right.

Now whose living in a Reality Distortion Field! I would say you take the cake, but I don't think MS makes cake.
wink
@Loverock Davidson Or maybe it means they didn't have to download any additional apps for it to do everything they bought it to do. Of course we all know how good your predictions are, many an investor would be wise to see what you say and then invest based on the opposite to happen.

Or perhaps it means that 1/3 of ipad owners are smart enough not to waste their time and money on trivia.

Excellent!
Angry Birds isn't a very good game. What is wrong with you?
@Droid101 I challenge you to make a better game and sell it for $1/free with as much success.
@jmwells21

What is Angry Birds? Something I'm supposed to look up today because it's been mentioned in two blogs?
@jmwells21 I think you could have left it at "I challenge you to make a game".

@Droid101 Actually Angry Birds is a decent game... Sow hat is wrong with YOU?
Yep the article title was written by a moron as we all know that the iPad comes with a slew of apps installed. That said, I have never understood the concept of playing games on mine, when I have free time I am reading email or news, which I never get through.
It's also possible that the prices for Ipad apps are just crazy and people who own an Ipad also either had an iphone or an ipod touch before this means theres no actual urgency on buying the same app that costs up to 3 times more than the original one for the iphone/ipod thouch

iPad expensive toy
jscott418 22nd Oct 2010
After trying the iPad I came to the conclusion that its a adult toy. Their is nothing wrong with that. But Apple's claim in advertising that its such a useful device has fallen on deaf ears for many of iPad owners.
