[UPDATE: A warning for all Samsung Omnia owners before updating!]

There's a Windows Phone update hitting handsets today, but it's not the one bringing features such as cut and paste that users have been waiting for.

So what's in it? The official Windows Phone Blog has the details:

What’s in this update?

This first update for Windows Phone is designed to improve the software update process itself. So while it might not sound exciting, it’s still important because it’s paving the way for all future goodie-filled updates to your phone, such as copy and paste or improved Marketplace search.

In the future, I encourage you to check out our new update history page on the Windows Phone website for a brief, plain-English summary of what each update does or what features it adds to your phone.

When will I get this update?

We’ll begin sending it out today. But to help ensure the process goes smoothly, it won’t be sent to everyone at once. So you might see an update message before your spouse, co-worker, or neighbor (or vice versa). This is a common industry practice. That said, we understand you’re eager to have the latest software on your phone, and our goal is to deliver it to you as quickly as possible.

To get it you'll need to connect your Windows Phone handset to the Zune software or the WP7 Connector for Mac and you'll be guided through the update.

[UPDATE 2: WinRumors has outlined a possible fix for the WP7 update handset bricking problem. It's long and convoluted, involved downloading firmware from untrusted sources and there are no guarantees ... but it could bring your bricked handset back to life.]

[UPDATE 3: Microsoft issues comment on the matter here.]

  • The only update that will please me will be when they KIN it...

    @Loverock Davidson

    You remind me of the one good scene in the 101 Dalmations film (1996) my children re-watched this weekend, except with some changes. Viz.:

    Loverock: I thought we liked tablets this year.
    Ballmer: What kind of sycophant are you?
    Loverock: Uh... what kind of sycophant would you like me to be?

      @BanjoPaterson

      That's funny, you remind me of a 5 year old who can't get what the big kids are using, so he runs around telling everyone it's crap.

      And stop sullying the name of Banjo Paterson, he'd eat trolls like you for breakfast.

    It's a fact that the original iPhone did not have cut & paste. But given all the complaints about that lack of cut & paste initially, one would think MS would have realized how important it would be to have C & P from the outset. Sounds to me that MS has sold their "wine" before its "time".

    • Curious (not trolling, really) ...

      @Heart_Man_2000 or anyone else ... is cut & paste that difficult to do in a mobile device? How could it have been left out, does anyone know? It seems like a pretty dramatic use-case oversight ...

      Or is it that the gestures involved (range selection or something) are difficult to implement? Doesn't seem like that'd be the case ...

    How about an update on ACTUAL phone sales from OEMs to customers? Why is Microsoft denying the manufacturers to release THEIR numbers?
