Walmart announces Kinect for Xbox 360 pricing

By | July 14, 2010, 3:39am PDT

Mega retailer Walmart has published pricing information for the Kinect controller-free controller for the Xbox 360 - the whole package, including a game, will set you back $199.

Kinect is a hands-free controller that allows gamers to control scheduled their Xbox 360 using body movements, and forms the core of Microsoft’s plan to revolutionize gaming without actually revolutionizing the console itself.

So, what’s the Walmart offer?

So $199 buys you the Kinect controller, a choice of game and a $30 eGift card. Not a bad deal.

The games with Kinect support on offer as part of the deal are:

  • Kinect Dance Central
  • Kinect Joy Ride
  • Kinectimals
  • Kinect Sports
  • Kinect Adventures
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows

The main question everyone has about Kinect is the obvious one: Will people buy it? The Xbox 360 has been around since November 2005 and some 40 million have been sold (although it’s hard to know how many haven’t ended up on a trash pile somewhere because they suffered from RRoD), so the potential market is big. But a 2005 vintage Xbox 360 is, from a capability standpoint, pretty much the same as a brand new 360 S. $200 is a lot of money to drop on an accessory for a console that’s been around for so long and I wonder whether gamers wouldn’t have preferred a proper hardware refresh of the console first (although that would have been expensive for Microsoft).

Kinect is scheduled for a November 4th launch.

I would think MS Office 2010 would be the product of the year for Microsoft.

If you believe that RRoD makes an Xbox end up on trash pile, you probably are not aware of the fact that MS covers XBox for such failures, and you get a replacement console for all such RRoDs (unless of course they have been modded)

XBox 360 goes Wii...
jasonp@... Updated - 14th Jul 2010
It worked for Nintendo...no reason to think XBox 360 owners won't snap 'em up. Different technology, sure, but the same conceptual approach to real interactive games.

The fun part here...

is that for the same $200, you can buy a Wii. Instead of one game with the Kinect, the Wii comes with two game discs - Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort. You also tack on the ability to browse the web from your TV if you don't have the ability.

Here's my question - why does something that looks like a couple of webcams in a single package cost $200?

@nix_hed - And don't forget to make sure that you take out the insurance policy on your big ass flat screen TV so that the next time your kids throw a Wii controller through the damn thing that you don't have to pay for another screen!

Once you've experienced what Kinect can do, I think you'll be singing a different song. This truly is a revolutionary product.

I see, because its a Microsoft product you downplay it like you do in all your articles. I believe the Kinect is going to sell very well. What you are going to hear, and happened with the wii, is the out of shape gamers reporting injuries from this. Kinect has a lot of potential, lets just hope the game makers don't pile on their shovelware.

Kinect looks very nice to me
P. Douglas Updated - 14th Jul 2010
The demo of Kinect in this video looks very nice. (The demo starts about 1:24:50 into the video.) The system seemed responsive to me, with (at least in some cases) only a small, tolerable amount of lag.

I think Kinect will increase Xbox revenue appreciably. I think however that MS can go even further to broaden the appeal of Xbox, by opening up the platform to developers to extend the experience in many new directions, and in many cases, via subscription services through Xbox Live.

@P. Douglas - What's stopping you from becoming a developer of XBox titles? MS already offers ENORMOUS support for this:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/dev/regdev.htm

And if you don't want to play at the real hard-core end of things, you can (relatively) quickly write great games that run on your PC, XBox and WinPhone7 using XNA without requiring any/much code change.

@de-void
Or look at http://creators.xna.com/en-US/
they even have tutorials for creating XBox games for Windows Phone 7.

Thanks for the info
P. Douglas 15th Jul 2010
@de-void,

Thanks for the link and info. While it is true that the Xbox offers game development opportunities, I was talking about development opportunities beyond games. E.g. radio services, rich 10 foot multimedia experience, etc. An example of a rich 10 foot multimedia experience is a FOX News application that: streams live programming; allows you to easily search through previously broadcasted programs; provides live feeds of news, sports, etc. In the above scenario, you wind up with an experience that is better than what you can get on TV or the web, which makes the service and the Xbox Live network very compelling.

Costs as much as the Wii
ryanmc 14th Jul 2010
There is no way I am going to buy this when I could buy a completely new Wii for less.

@ryanmc - you wanna go spend $200 on a re-boxed GameCube with a slightly faster processor whch you have to wave plastic controllers at, then be my/our guest.

WiiMote will never be able to do what Kinect can and no Wii title will be able to immerse you into a game like some of the titles already in the works for Kinect do.

Kinect will be a failure
kingscoop71 14th Jul 2010
It'll end up just like the Sega CD. Most casual gamers don't own a 360, they own a Wii. If they do have one it's because of their kids. No average person is going to go out and spend $200 for a 360, and then spend another $150-$200 for an add-on.

@kingscoop71 - Sure they are. Many have already gone out and spent $250 (launch price) on the Wii PLUS AT LEAST $150 on extra controllers, guns, tennis rackets, WiiFit mats, etc. And that's before they bought any games.

Most XBox owners today are at the hard-core gamer end of the scale. The Kinect will open the XBox up to a whole new audience of casual gamers, fitness fans who like to work-out to a game of some sort, dance fans, kids, etc. All of whom will be able to enjoy new games without needing to wave a controller, turn a fake steering wheel or balance on a plastic board.

I agree. And the types of games that are being offered will appeal mainly to the average person. ******** gamers will ignore Natal.

@bigcuedaddy - "I agree. And the types of games that are being offered will appeal mainly to the average person."
Precisely: The 360 will become interesting to a whole new market who've been underserved thus far: They'll be able to enjoy kids games, fitness & sport titles, activities, etc.

"******** gamers will ignore Natal. " Until someone releases a title which immerses hard-core gamers into a far more involving role within the game than ever before. Imagine a fighting game where you really do get to be Bruce Lee. Or a shooter where you get to ... literally ... run through the streets shooting people.
