What tech are you looking forward to the most in 2011?

Summary: 2011 is nearly upon us, and it's a sure thing that the new year will bring with it a lot of new and exciting tech to tempt us into whipping out our wallets and charging that credit card like here's no tomorrow.

2011 is nearly upon us, and it's a sure thing that the new year will bring with it a lot of new and exciting tech to tempt us into whipping out our wallets and charging that credit card like here's no tomorrow.

But what tech are you looking forward to the most? Here's a list of some of the tempting tech that we're likely to see make an appearance over the course of the year:

While consumer products like handsets and tablets interest me and I'm curious to see where they go in the new year, I'm also very interested in seeing where the software takes us. iOS, Android, WP7, Windows and Mac OS X will all see revamps over the coming year (either new releases or preview releases) so that should keep things exciting. Hardware is cool, but it's the underlying software that makes it really cool.

It's set to be an exciting 2011!

  • iPhone 5

To see if it's worth upgrading my 3GS.

@MG537 I voted the same just to see how much they can improve upon the iPhone 4... which was worth the upgrade from my 3G. I have to admit I'm pretty psyched to see what the new iPad will be about, what tablets the Android manufacturers will come up with to give the iPad some competition, and having iPhone on VZW.

@MG537 I voted iPhone 5 for the same reason: My big issue with my 3GS is that I need more memory which the iPhone 4 did nothing to help. I hope apple skips right past 64 and goes to 128MB so I can put Music AND Pictures on my mobile device.

  • 1. Chrome OS on a network terminal ...

... would be my first choice: coupled with a few free CITRIX tools (or similar) for small installations so that I can ditch M$ on most of my machines.

2. GB broadband would be my second ... so that I can work quickly wherever I am. Guess if I had this first ... then I could switch to *IX most-where ... but I think it will take some time.

3. The difficult problems appear to be in hardware not software: how to design a power-efficient, fast CPU (come on ARM!); how to construct a power-efficient, cheap, large, light portable screen; how to improve hard disk speed.

In other words I am at the opposite end of the spectrum to AKH ... I think software is following/constrained by the hardware. There are no shortages of OS's and applications. The major software problem is how to expoit the possibilities offered by multicore CPU's (we have plenty of CPU performance asis).

    More WP7 devices!

  • Is that all there is?

Newer versions of the same stuff

  • Cheaper, faster SSD's?

How about a price drop on those SSD's? I'm definitely looking forward to picking a few of those up when the price is better.

    USB3 on my new desktop!

  • I want fewer Apple devices in my life, not more

So no iPad, iPad 2, or iPhone 5 for me. Nope, I'm looking to replace my iPhone 4 with the new and improved WP7.5 and replace my MacBook Pro with a fantastic Windows 7 powered slate. Come on HP, your Slate 500 has been a massive success, you need to make more and then sell them in Canada!

@james347 And you still claim credibility on topics such as Windows tablets and WP7? LOL

    • Cmon, its fun

Always entertaining to see what they can come up with with given their massive R&D investment.

2010 was the year of the barely functional game controller;-)

In the OS space we'll have Apple's next release, previewing windows 8 in 2012-13.

WP7 users are excited about the possibility of cut & paste in 2011.

  • So much to look forward to

I voted for Windows tablets (Hate all you want, but I think Microsoft pushing Windows on tablets will really push the limits of what tablets are capable of, sorry iPad lovers, iOS just doesn't cut it for me), but I'm also looking forward to see WP7, hopefully, WP7 tablets (I have a really cool idea that could beat the iPad hands down - Think Courier combined into WP7), and definitely Windows 8.

  • I'll watch the companies more than hardware

And I admit that Apple is at the top of companies to watch.

But HP could deliver some interesting products, MS might deliver improvements and Google may have an interesting year.

As far as products go, will there be any major new product delivered? Like the iPad in 2010? Maybe some "iPad Killers", but a new product group is very hard to deliver.

  • Augmented reality on the fly

    Browsing is boring.
Things should be friendly and tell me all about what they are, their capabilities, and if possible, what the future holds. The AR interface should stick on my glasses or maybe hang from my ear.
