Where's your Windows Phone 7 update?

Where's your Windows Phone 7 update?

Summary: Are you wondering where your Windows Phone 7 update is? You're not alone!

Are you wondering where your Windows Phone 7 update is? You're not alone!

To try to answer your question, Microsoft has put together a table for US customers:

  • Stage 1: Testing The software update is undergoing mobile operator network and quality tests.
  • Stage 2: Scheduling Operator testing is complete, and Microsoft is scheduling the update for delivery. This phase typically lasts 10 days or less.
  • Stage 3: Delivering update Microsoft has started to send out the update. Because updates are typically delivered to customers in batches, it might take several weeks before you receive notice that an update is available for you.

Bear in mind that the carriers also have a say in when you get this update ...

This long, drawn-out release process for updates is a mess, and leaves consumers in the dark as to when to expect their update. If Apple can coordinate an iOS release worldwide and across all models for a single day, the fact that Microsoft can't do the same for consumers is a total and utter fail.

I am utterly appauled at this train wreck.

I'm a long time Microsoft developer and cannot believe what a monumental stuff up this is after all the hype.

More details on my thoughts here http://www.bondigeek.com/blog/2011/03/24/windows-phone-update-what-a-complete-balls-up/

      @BondiGeek

An ironic post from someone who does not even proofread his comments. My WP7 is great as it is: easy to use and rock solid (*no* hangs, freezes, etc in 5 months). So take your time, MS, and get it right.

@batpox I'm not disputing that WP7 is awesome, if you had read my blog post you would know that.

But what I am truelly pissed off about is that we have been lied to and this update debacle should not be happening. Entering the smart phone market this late Microsoft need to be as good as or better than the rest and instead we are being held hostage by the carriers...and we were told this would not be the case.

That is not what I signed up for.

If frequent crashes, freezes and 3-4 reboots daily is what you call "solid" then good luck! Not only the first release was half baked, even the first two update attempts have been a big failure. Now this latest attempt, how sad is that! They can't even announce a set date for a specific model/carrier. This is a platform that has only 10% of market at best. Imagine the mess if this market share were to grow, which I am pretty sure will not, if the current state of affairs at WP7 is any indication. I have for years stayed away from the lure of iPhone partly due to the excellent calling plans from T-Mobile kept me switching over to ATT and was quite excited after buying HD7, but alas it has not met the expectations. With the impending acquisition of T-Mobile by AT&T, MS must be concerned about losing another potential 34 million customers to iPhone, as these customers now have a choice.

Um, I'm not sure which phone you are using. 3-4 reboots daily? I have had my HD-7 for 4 months and I've never rebooted my phone and it has never crashed. It has never slowed down or performed sluggishly.

If you do have a WP7, you might want to trade it in.

Been using my samsung focus for several months now without a single crash, slowdown, hiccup or what-have-you. Most likely you have a lemon or you tried to install an incompatible memory card.

      • It never ceases to amaze me how people would think this is normal.

Smart people would conclude there's a problem with the specific device experiencing the problem.

Waiting for several days or weeks for the release of an update is no big deal. It does like you drop calls when you're holding a phone in a wrong way. It's just the media and some people who hates Microsoft that is making this issue bigger.

The release of copy&paste is even faster than any other platforms out there.

Um... hello pot, have you met the kettle?? "Antennagate" has been proven a non-issue trumped up by media, and you're using THAT to make your point?

      Nice nickname, BTW.

A new phone update! I haven't even got the first one yet. HTC Mozart, T-Mobile german branded, but I'm using it in Australia on the vodafone network. If vodafone don't offer WP7 do I still get an update?

I wouldn't wait for the phone company, try plugging your phone in and check on Zune software, a bunch of people are getting the updates already by doing this and if memory serves me right...

"Just installed the update on my HTC Mozart, unbranded
      Tele2, Sweden"

I'd say it is worth a shot. Even if it isn't out yet it will be very soon. I've been hearing early April for most and a few on T-Mobile at the end of April.

        @audidiablo

        Zune software says:
You phone is up to date.
Current phone software version 7.0 (7004)

I'll just wait I guess. I was in Taiwan a couple of weeks ago using the HTC Mozart on the FarEasTone network, after playing with mine a friend bought the same phone from Taiwan Da Ga Da. He charged it, fired it up, and got offered the first update straight away. I couldn't believe it, still I'll just wait patiently. I certainly wouldn't do anything stupid like trade it in on an Android or something as I'm finding the office live integration too useful.

The author is known to be a half idiot with logically flawed arguments when it comes to Microsoft technology. If Microsoft can update billions of PCs the moment an update is released, they are also capable of doing it for its phone technology. So please stop this FUD. If you need more clicks to your articles try something else.

    • RE: Where's your Windows Phone 7 update?

@owlnet - Not only that but he conveniently forgot to mention that Apple serves at the most 4 devices that they manufacture themselves whereas Microsoft has well over 10 devices from several different manufacturers, running on several different carriers' networks. What a freakin jackass!

      • RE: Where's your Windows Phone 7 update?

@NPGMBR And yet Microsoft stipulated that all the hardware to have the same specs so in reality it is ONE device they are supporting. What a freaking jackass!

    • RE: Where's your Windows Phone 7 update?

@owlnet I don't see where the author contradicts your statement. When he calls out MS for not being able to follow in Apple's footsteps he is basically saying the same thing. Not sure how he is spreading FUD. From my viewpoint as a WP7 user and advocate, MS is doing a exellent job of two things. Putting the US in the back seat from day one and causing missinformation to spread from blogger because they don't have their story together. From all this it becomes apparent that OEMs or carriers are causing massive delays that MS does not want to attribute to its own actions. The statements of we are working with the carriers to test updates must not be applicable to US carriers since AT&T seems to be in no hurry to release any updates.

I agree, all ATT wants you to do is get a new phone so they can lock you in for two more years. Heaven forbid you can upgrade your phone and use it for more than 2 years.
If ATT wont let me upgrade through them then I will jail break it sooner or later. When I jailbroke my Windows 6 phone it was like having a new phone again, exactly what ATT dosen't want.

  • Yo Adrian,

Why don't you put this situation in the context of the Android update clusterf*ck? Oh that's right, anything WP7 has to be put in the worst possible light. Why do you keep writing about WP7 anyway?
