Amazon has unveiled new Kindle ebook readers. Along with a $99 Kindle Touch featuring WiFi and a $149 3G Kindle Touch is a new 'basic' Kindle at a new low price of $79.

Note: These prices are for the 'Kindle with special offers' ad-supported versions. The ad-free Kindle Touch costs $40 more, while the Kindle is $30 more.

If you're feeling a little more flush, there's a new $99 Kindle Touch with WiFi and a $149 Kindle Touch with 3G and WiFi.

These price points are incredibly disruptive.

I think that what will catch the eye of buyers here is not the tech but the price. There's something psychological about that sub-$100 price point. While ebook readers aren't down to the price of a cheap digital watch yet, the $79 price point isn't far off.

I've been critical of the Kindle in the past, but Amazon has taken this device and run with it aggressively. The Kindle has come a long way since that first-generation device that sold for $399.

I was very interested until I found out that the $79 one is ad supported. Now I'm on the fence.

I have the last Kindle model and I love it. I will look at the $99 Kindle touch, just to see if it has any features that are of interest, but I plan to wait a while yet to purchase a tablet.

  • The $199 Kindle Fire interest

My wife has a Kindle 3 and loves it. She has been buying books from Amazon for a long time. My e-readers are on my Android phone. I am interested in a 6/7 inch tablet but I prefer the Nook over the K-Fire. I like the K-Fire price but want a more Android like tablet.

I'll be buying the $99 touch wifi for Christmas almost certainly now. That is a great deal for a great product.
