Would you let Al Gore borrow your Facebook and Twitter accounts?

Summary: Would you allow a third party access to your Facebook and/or Twitter account?

This has nothing at all to do with hardware or software but I'm still interested it what the readers of this blog make of it.

Would you allow a third party access to your Facebook and/or Twitter account? What if that third party was Al Gore and he wanted to send 'good cause' messages to your family, friends and followers?

This is what the Climate Reality Project - founded and chaired by Al Gore (Nobel Laureate and former Vice President of the United States, for those of you not keeping up with things) - want. The project is asking that people 'donate' their social media accounts for 24 hours so that climate change content can be posted to it over a period of 24 hours.

Starting a day before the event (Sept 13 Central Time) you grant us permission to post on your behalf. We will only post content relevant to 24 Hours of Reality and climate change, and we won't post more than a few times an hour. You'll still be able to tweet and use Facebook normally, and you can revoke our access anytime through your Facebook and Twitter settings. After September 15 (CT) we will stop posting any content on your Facebook or Twitter feed and you can revoke our access.

It seems that a lot of people have already signed up ...

So, what do you think? Is it a good idea? Will you be signing up? Is it just a way for an organization to spam people? Is it nothing more than slackivism? Will it just annoy people? I've got nothing against Al Gore, but I'm not letting him have access to my accounts!

  • How about they Offer a 'Share' Button?

Asking for credentials is a little over the top, isn't it?

  • um,no

Aside from the fact that I don't believe in the Alarmism Propoganda, their systems are now royal targets. Can you imagine what would happen if they got hacked?

@mtgardenghi: You go girl! We must stop the "Alarmism Propoganda" (sic.) --like that stupid stuff they said about the Hindenburg, Titanic, and the housing bubble. Good thing we've got super-smart people like yourself being the voice of reason.

Who's side are you on? Experts and the masses accepted that the Titanic was unsinkable; dirigable transportation was thought safe for decades before 1937; a super-majority of economists didn't see the bubble or kept quiet if they did.... You've given great examples of mistaken group-think. What bothers me is if history repeats I won't know in time to get refunds on my energy credits before Mr. Gore has spent that money private-jetting between his five-times-larger-than-mine homes.

  • Isn't this "Good Cause" spam?

.. and I get enough of that anyway.

Personally, I value my reputation too much to "lend" it to anyone, even Al (no relation) Gore. It is a slippery slope; once you do it for one person, it becomes hard to say no for an equally good cause, except that each time it is a little bit less until eventually you are letting friends on a mission "borrow" your account.

Put it another way - would you let your kids borrow your email account?

Al's a great guy and of course he's someone we can trust. But, Adrian Kingsley-Hughes? Not so much.

@NYOD Could you please explain why we would ever trust that hypocrite Gore?

I don't see anywhere on their site or their facebook page that asks that I lend them my facebook account.

      @archmage@...

Actually, the 790K seems to refer to followers plus their friends. I.e., if each of them had 1000 friends (before that day), it may be only about 800 people who are currently participating.

That would scare me more if the human race weren't so obviously thriving.

Luckily for us, angst poses very little threat to species survival.

  • 790,583 Sheep

It's no surprise that there are (at least) 790,583 people who have fallen for the "climate change" propaganda. After all, politics (and "climate change" is purely a political game) is a ubiquitous disease. But it's a scary thought that such mindlessness extends to the point wherein social network users will hand over control of their personal accounts to the fraudmongers.

    Altogether now -- 1, 2, 3...."Baaaaaa!"

@slingzenarrowzuvowtrayjissforchin: Thanks for the brilliant analysis. Just look at all those stupid sheep, listening to scientists when they could be a smart sheep, like yourself, listening to Shawn Hannity and Rush Limbaugh.

And another thing... Flying machines?!!? Stupid scientists, that's never going to work! Don't fall for the heavier than air flying machine propaganda stupid sheep!
