Would you let Al Gore borrow your Facebook and Twitter accounts?

By | September 9, 2011, 7:17am PDT

Summary: Would you allow a third party access to your Facebook and/or Twitter account?

This has nothing at all to do with hardware or software but I’m still interested it what the readers of this blog make of it.

Would you allow a third party access to your Facebook and/or Twitter account? What if that third party was Al Gore and he wanted to send ‘good cause’ messages to your family, friends and followers?

This is what the Climate Reality Project - founded and chaired by Al Gore (Nobel Laureate and former Vice President of the United States, for those of you not keeping up with things) - want. The project is asking that people ‘donate’ their social media accounts for 24 hours so that climate change content can be posted to it over a period of 24 hours.

Starting a day before the event (Sept 13 Central Time) you grant us permission to post on your behalf. We will only post content relevant to 24 Hours of Reality and climate change, and we won’t post more than a few times an hour. You’ll still be able to tweet and use Facebook normally, and you can revoke our access anytime through your Facebook and Twitter settings. After September 15 (CT) we will stop posting any content on your Facebook or Twitter feed and you can revoke our access.

It seems that a lot of people have already signed up …

So, what do you think? Is it a good idea? Will you be signing up? Is it just a way for an organization to spam people? Is it nothing more than slackivism? Will it just annoy people? I’ve got nothing against Al Gore, but I’m not letting him have access to my accounts!

A person would have to have rocks in his head to say yes to this !.
For a person to preach rising sea levels and then buy a nice seaside mansion, its incredible for him to ask us for help to spread his miss truths.

Asking for credentials is a little over the top, isn't it?

Aside from the fact that I don't believe in the Alarmism Propoganda, their systems are now royal targets. Can you imagine what would happen if they got hacked?

/shudder
@mtgardenghi
Well said.
@mtgardenghi: You go girl! We must stop the "Alarmism Propoganda" (sic.) --like that stupid stuff they said about the Hindenburg, Titanic, and the housing bubble. Good thing we've got super-smart people like yourself being the voice of reason.
Who's side are you on? Experts and the masses accepted that the Titanic was unsinkable; dirigable transportation was thought safe for decades before 1937; a super-majority of economists didn't see the bubble or kept quiet if they did.... You've given great examples of mistaken group-think. What bothers me is if history repeats I won't know in time to get refunds on my energy credits before Mr. Gore has spent that money private-jetting between his five-times-larger-than-mine homes.

.. and I get enough of that anyway.

Personally, I value my reputation too much to "lend" it to anyone, even Al (no relation) Gore. It is a slippery slope; once you do it for one person, it becomes hard to say no for an equally good cause, except that each time it is a little bit less until eventually you are letting friends on a mission "borrow" your account.

Put it another way - would you let your kids borrow your email account?
Al's a great guy and of course he's someone we can trust. But, Adrian Kingsley-Hughes? Not so much.
@NYOD Could you please explain why we would ever trust that hypocrite Gore?
I don't see anywhere on their site or their facebook page that asks that I lend them my facebook account.
Slactivism, lemmings, blind followers of the Goracle, 790K fools and growing...
@archmage@...

Actually, the 790K seems to refer to followers plus their friends. I.e., if each of them had 1000 friends (before that day), it may be only about 800 people who are currently participating.
@archmage@... Absolutely on the button...gee wonder who owns and sells (and originated) the carbon credit scheme...why of course the Goracle. Well said!
Not only NO but HELL NO!!! I am not a fan of someone who is crying wolf over something that has been occurring for billions of years and NO I do not trust him nor his cronies.
@jerske@... +1
@jerske@: You couldn't be more right. Species have been dying from changing conditions for billions of year --why not ours?
@rrusson_z
That would scare me more if the human race weren't so obviously thriving.

Luckily for us, angst poses very little threat to species survival.
I wouldn't give him the time of day. Hell no!

790,583 Sheep
slingzenarrowzuvowtrayjissforchin 9th Sep
It's no surprise that there are (at least) 790,583 people who have fallen for the "climate change" propaganda. After all, politics (and "climate change" is purely a political game) is a ubiquitous disease. But it's a scary thought that such mindlessness extends to the point wherein social network users will hand over control of their personal accounts to the fraudmongers.

Altogether now -- 1, 2, 3...."Baaaaaa!"
@slingzenarrowzuvowtrayjissforchin: Thanks for the brilliant analysis. Just look at all those stupid sheep, listening to scientists when they could be a smart sheep, like yourself, listening to Shawn Hannity and Rush Limbaugh.

And another thing... Flying machines?!!? Stupid scientists, that's never going to work! Don't fall for the heavier than air flying machine propaganda stupid sheep!
@rrusson_z Yeah, all those stupid scientist that thirty years ago were warning us about the upcoming freeze and are now warning us about global warming. If you had a clue you would realize that it's about money. If they back global warming they get funding that allows them to keep "working" versus getting a real research job. If you don't believe it being about money just take a look at that good old blathering idiot Al's net worth since he became a global warming, sorry climate change "activist"
Even if you remove Gore from the equation...let's say you change the scenario to "Would you let ZDNet use your twitter of facebook account to push messages?" The only logical answer is NO. Another analogy...do you Forward EVERY SINGLE joke or advertising email you receive to everyone you have in your contact list? Again, the only logical answer is NO.

So, back to the "Would you" question...what will the repercussions to the sorry followers be when the "borrower's" infrastructure is hacked and now some nefarious do-bad's have access to your stuff? How about when the "Borrower's" message changes a bit and they send stuff you don't agree with?

I find it difficult to believe that there are 3/4 Million people so stupid!
No. I didnt trust him enough to run our country, and I'm not going to trust him enough to spread half truths.
Is Climate Change Real? Yes.
Is there anything we can do about it? Not really
Is it even cause by people? So little that its pretty much No.
Is Al Gore bored? Yes, and he needs attention.

You forgot to mention...
JoeyBurke 9th Sep
Gosh, why did you leave out that Gore invented the Internet.
And what jerske said....
@JoeyBurke Maybe because Gore didn't invent the Internet. Anyway, regardless of one's feelings about Al Gore and/or global warming, I fail to see how this "borrow" helps anybody. What am I missing?
@drobinow It was sarcasm - Gore claimed to have invented the internet.
@JoeyBurke: Sigh... It's funny, but it's a misquote. Gore said "I took the initiative in the creation of the Internet." referring to his work in Congress. Full story at Snopes:
http://www.snopes.com/quotes/internet.asp
What you are really talking about is, for facebook, allowing an application to have access to your friends list and then effectively spam them in your name. I don't know enough about twitter to comment.

For facebook there is always the simple expediency of
re-posting a status message to get the word out.
Slapping this message on all of your friends is likely to
make at least a few of them less than happy with you
and perhaps have your ability to do so revoked.

As to "climate change", we have it all of the time. It's
called seasons. The more extreme changes can usually
be tied to the sun's activity, but since they can't
exploit that to make money, they choose blame whatever
they can on people's activity; some of which likely should
be curtailed to keep things nicer, but not by crying wolf.

AL Gore earned the Nobel prize in the same way Barack
Obama did. They did it by saying the "right" things to
push an agenda rather than advancing anything real.
No, and I won't let facebook publish my picture where ever they decide too either. That's why I closed the account after deleting everything.

DON'T TRUST FACEBOOK WITH ANYTHING! They will publish it on other sites, for your convenience!
Hmmm. The 790,000+ responses beg the question: If you're ignorant enough to allow third-party access to your facebook/twitter account, then are you ignorant enough to blindly follow their political agenda without question?

I strongly suspect the herd mentality at work here...
I admire President-Elect Gore well enough (I liked his daddy better). But hell, no!

This is a stupid concept, and probably came from the same advisors who told him to walk away and let Shrub steal the election rather than fight for it.
Not only NO, not only HELL NO, but no f'king way in hell!
Does anyone actually read twitter junk news? I think climate change is a proven fact to all except the ignorant, but I doubt twitter can change a dim wit's mind.
@ITOdeed I don't think that anybody is disputing that there is climate change. What is in dispute is if it is natural or man made climate change.
Alarmist propaganda Al Gore is a low life he uses 17 times more electricity than the normal American
Never in a million years, particularly Al Gore. He is a charlatan who makes money out of a suspect cause.
I wouldn't let that slimy politician use anything. Is their nothing else to write about?
NO

He's and idiot (that being nice), well actually he fairly smart he get idiot people to give him millions for his fake global warming junk. But remember he invented the internet!
How do they post on your behalf if they don't have your account?
@redbear2 Sounds to me that you do give them access to your account. What I found interesting but have not seen pointed out is that after the time period that you have agreed to you have to revoke their access. In other words, of the 790K people that have signed up how many are going to forget until this group starts using their account again whenever they feel like it.

It does not ask for your login credentials for neither facebook nor twitter.... It asks simply for permission to post on your wall (like many apps and services do) and permission to view your current posts. It's not like they can view your password, and you would just revoke their access after 24-hours of reality... Needless to say, I signed up!
@branrules101 Sorry for you.
Can I have some of what you are smoking?

Moron Alert
MichaelWells 9th Sep
This is a joke, right? Algore is a moron.
well, as much as i respect al gore as one of the internet founders, a former VICE president, and weather prognosticator; i would say no. hopefully facebook will find a way to nix this kind of perversion. "we wont post more than a few times an hour" - gee thanks.
Because I did not run my diesel generator, I sold the carbon credits on ebay for $40 each. Yes. Each gallon or so of burned fuel is X credit. The government web pages shgow this.. may as well cash in and let the environmentailists pay me not to pollute. Mr. Gore will never be allowed to access my acount(s). He'd probably want to give the credits away.
@opcom He'd probably want to give the credits away.
He would never want to give them away, that's how he makes so much money.
A person would have to have rocks in his head to say yes to this !.
