Hello, and welcome to the new ZDNet Health blog.

My name is Denise Amrich. I'm a registered nurse in the state of Florida, and your friendly cyber-neighborhood blogger.

My goal for this blog is to explore the ways health is evolving in our 21st century world, along with the confluence of technology, health informatics, geeky gadgets, social media, the Internet, the availability of incredible amounts of information, the changing landscape of health care policy, and amazing advances in science.

One of the roles of the nurse is client and community teaching. Sometimes this involves finding out what health issues are affecting a community, and making sure people have good, accurate, understandable information about the pertinent resources and solutions available.

Here at ZDNet, we are a community...a huge online community. That means this blog is for all of us. This blog's for you.

I'm hoping to see great things from you fabulous ZDNet readers, too. I want to facilitate an ongoing lively, respectful, meeting-of-the-minds in the form of the discussion taking place in the TalkBacks.

So, I want to know -- what do you care about in terms of health and tech? What would you like to see covered here at ZDNet Health? TalkBack below.

Topics: Health, CXO, Legal, IT Employment

  • It was time that Health got its proper Blogger!

    As a developer of HIS I have found that nurses are the ones using more variety of technologies in healthcare so I'm looking forward to your posts. Welcome and good luck!

    Good to see that ZDNet has someone for this blog. I'd like to see some stories about the technologies being used in healthcare. A couple years ago there was a remote monitoring station that someone wrote a story for, those kinds of things would be a good read.

    As a certified personal trainer I would like to see coverage of the overweight epidemic in this country. Everywhere I go "I see Fat People" (to paraphrase the the kid in "Sixth Sense"). Many of the obese you see day to day do not need fancy health care as much as they need to stop overeating and instead exercise. More than likely of a random pick of 100 overweight people roughly 70% have health insurance but all 100 are overweight. So weight is a greater health problem than insurance nationwide as it leads to many of the problems health insurance has to address.
    I too am looking forward to your take on health.

      @Jerry1956

      What does this have to do with technology in health? Or using technology to manage health?

    Often doctors won't start with minimally invasive treatments because of time, threat of litigation and patient demands and response. I believe that my health is a partnership between my health care provider and my adherence to their instructions.
    I look forward to your discussion of preventative procedures and how to addapt them to this 74 year old body.

      @samworley4

      Hopefully not. This blog should be about how technology is being utilized in the health care field. If you want preventative procedures go see a doctor.

  • Meaningful Use

    I'd like to see a good series on Meaningful Use, HIE's, CCD's, Data Exchanges, etc...

    Add in ARRA, HITECH, and HIPAA while you're at it!

    Welcome aboard! I'm really looking forward to your posts. This is a really exciting time for health and tech, and it was the first year for the "health" category at SxSW Interactive - there were many interesting panels and sessions about the intersection of health and tech.

    I'm going to add my two cents, and hope that you also cover mental health and tech.

    Congrats!

  • Please share your clinician user's perspective on healthcare IT

    Welcome, Denise; glad to see ZDNet dedicating a blog to healthcare. With the industrys focus on IT as a means to improve patient care, I hope youll write about healthcare IT from the clinician users perspective and, especially given the notoriously poor adoption rates of certain clinical systems (like CPOE), please discuss what you think it will take to make systems more clinician friendly. Because without that, there will be no Meaningful Use.

-Peter Henderson, VP of Marketing, PatientKeeper Inc.
