Apple finally bringing 1080p HD videos to iTunes, next Apple TV?

By | July 10, 2011, 8:55am PDT

The Apple rumor du jour concerns one of the annoying drawbacks of iTunes and Apple TV video capabilities. AppleInsider is reporting that an “iTunes HD+” upgrade could be in the works that would finally bring 1080p HD videos to the iTunes ecosystem.

Apple has resisted 1080p for its iTunes videos and even the current version of Apple TV because the company claims it will slow streaming speeds, which could degrade your viewing experience more than the extra resolution could improve it. In fact, Apple has even resisted putting Blu-ray drives into its Mac computers.

So what’s changed that may be influencing Apple’s decision? It now has a superior A5 chip that can handle 1080p streaming on the iPad 2 and that could find its way into a new version of Apple TV that’d be available for the holiday shopping season. Broadband speeds and market penetration are also increasing, which makes more homes capable of streaming 1080p without as many hiccups as in the past.

Of course, the competitive landscape includes other streaming devices like Roku with versions that can support 1080p as well as more Blu-ray players and TVs that can stream Netflix in HD. And, finally, there are the never-ending rumors of Apple bringing out HDTVs, which presumably would have Apple TV functionality built into them.

Every Apple rumor should be taken with a huge grain of salt, but this is just the type of incremental upgrade that answers a longstanding annoyance and requires purchasing a new device to take advantage of the upgrade. So don’t be surprised if 1080p support comes to iTunes and Apple TV in the fall after all.

Seems logical

If Apple is going to start offering 1080p through iTunes it will want to have all it's new hardware capable of using it. Seems like a simple upgrade, cost wise, for Apple to start pumping out A5 Apple TV's. For those of you ho do not buy iTunes movies I would add when you buy an HD (720p) movie through iTunes now you actually get two copies, both the standard definition and the 720p, downloaded to your library. Would this mean we would get three copies (standard, 720p, 1080p)? I can hear my hard drives screaming already.
@oncall: ... perfectly (except for screens of iPhone and iPad can not show full 1080p; but FullHD TV set shows all lines).

No need for new hardware.

However, for iPhone 3Gs, 720p will be necessary.

@DeRSSS while 720p can improve the quality of colors and smoothness of images on a small display over 480i/p images, 1080p has no real advantage on displays smaller than 32 inches.

So having 1080p support on a smartphone is totally useless. Paying extra for a feature that does not give any kind of benefit is like paying for an extended warranty that covers you for the exact same period of time as the original factory warranty.

Flag the "known" Apple likers?

It is called censorship. If someone dares to say they prefer a non-Microsoft product, they must be censored.
... search for "Real Racing 2 HD 1080p output via AppleTV" (iOS 5 beta; final version will be released by October).

The same is with other A4-powered devices like iPhone 4 and iPad 1. So 1080p has nothing to do with computational power and I never heard that Apple's ever said that they do not do 1080p videos because of this or bandwidth issue.

On the contrary, it was obvious from very beginning that this issue is purely content owner's limitation. They are too afraid to loose their ultimate quality BlueRay sales.

So the rumour about 1080p videos coming is very well probable, while the rest of this blog entry is ignorant nonsense.

I love Apple, but the ATV is redundant for me. I have 2 iPads (v1 & v2), a 15" Macbook Pro, a new Mac Mini and an iPhone 4. Still, my samsung Bluray player rocks and the streaming quality of Vudu (1080p and beyond) is unmatched.

I ditched Netflix a long time ago. I'm 47; if I wanted to watch 25 year old movies I would have watched them 25-years ago....and I did! If they were stream only it would be worth the 8-bucks a month (that snuck up to 13-bucks seemingly without my knowledge), but they still keep that stupid mail in a dvd service, while crying about their license not letting them stream everything. That's their problem because I'm over it and I moved on.

Back to Apple TV, it just makes no sense to me. I have better streaming quality with my Samsung...and I mean the resolution is unmatched. My Mac Mini gives me everything else and much more. I just have to upgrade the 2-GIGS of RAM to 8, before I upgrade it to Lion. I just purchased it last week, so if a new one comes out I'm eligible for it, plus I get Lion for free. I heard a rumor that the next Mac Mini was going to use a cheaper video card from Intel. If that's true then I'm keeping the one I have : 0 )

I'm not sure why Apple would want to ship a TV. They do ship their own monitors, and putting Apple TV functionality into a TV would not be hard (internal HDMI and Optical audio Bus connection).

But, in the end, having it external for people to plug into the TV they already have would seem to be a much larger Market potential. Maybe they will do both...

None of the stores seem to know too much about them (sadly including those selling them). I believe they add the Smart TV interface to ANY TV, so becoming a competitor to Apple TV.....

One which includes a tuner for those who purchased their TV/Plasma/LCD before in-built tuners, & one for those who purchased with an in-built tuner. We all like simplicity in our life, so the interface can't be any more than 1 input source, or you'll lose the non-techies. Ideally you'd offer the ultimate STB, so that users would ditch the in-built tuners. Perhaps even with the ability to have Pay TV, or schedule a download line up/playlist for "My Pay TV".
Been getting 1080p on my XBox 360 and Zune for years. -yawn-
