While the TV industry (and fanboys) waits to see when, and if, Apple decides to finally launch a long-rumored television, an analyst is predicting that TV functionality may wind up in Apple's computers first.

According to AppleInsider, Wedge Partners' Brian Blair is forecasting that before an Apple HDTV is unveiled, its ecosystem -- Apple TV software and iCloud access -- could be built into new iMacs, which Blair believes will be redesigned for the first half of 2012. Considering that more and more desktop PCs are mimicking the iMac all-in-one approach, this could provide a key differentiator, especially if it includes a built-in TV tuner (which the AppleInsider post doesn't mention). Blair also surmises that this would provide a way for Apple to ease into the TV world, using display sizes already in the pipeline while it prepares much larger sets.

Blair predicted that the company would release an updated iPhone 4 instead of an iPhone 5 in the fall, so maybe he knows something we don't. If that's the case, then perhaps we'll see a new iMac with Apple TV functionality previewed during the MacWorld Expo next month.

    Its shocking they dont have that yet. Every PC Ihave had for probaly 10 years has had TV built in. Perhaps that is one of the reasons Macs have not done well against PC's

      @nanderto

      Actually you need a TV tuner card to be installed. Not every PC has one.

        @Bozzer - I think the article is referring to "Apple TV" functionality, just like Windows has had "Windows Media Center" for years

        adding a TV Tuner card or dongle is a separate issue - only needed if the user has access to an "Over The Air" signal

        seems to just be a "click-bait" article from an author who is supposed to understand Home Theater tech

    Um, about 1994 there was the Mac Performa TV...computer and TV all in one....not a new idea, just dropped in 1995

  • Actually....

    Every Mac can play TV shows already through iTunes. The question is would Apple bother including an OTA or Cable TV tuner.

  • Watching TV live on my PC while working...

    Been there.

    Done it.

    Doing it right now, in fact.

  • If any computer deserves it, it's the iMac

    Better screen quality says it all.

    Mind you, I'd rather see Blu-Ray...

    And I'd rather see an iMac that doesn't die a premature death from overheating. iMacs are not inexpensive, unlike regular PCs.

    WoW!!!!!

    So Apple is taking a USB dongle that has been available forever and like most of the new PCs have already done, is considering putting it inside the case.

    Magical!

      @tonymcs@...

      First, most new PCs do NOT come with TV tuners, second, Apple was doing it back in the early 90s, and third, it has nothing to do with USB, as all PCs with internal TV tuners do so with a PCI card.
      But once again, your ignorance will out.

      @partman1969@...
      Actually, elGato might be happy. They have never actually made the eyeTV hardware, but just get it from the OEM. Rather, they use it as a vehicle to bolt on their eyeTV software. I suspect that if macs started having built-in TV tuners, elGato would go after that market with a vengeance.
