It's not TV everywhere yet, but Comcast's announcement today is getting us towards programming becoming available without being tethered to a traditional TV and cable box. The cable giant has detailed plans to let subscribers watch live TV and on-demand programs via iPad and Android tablets later this year.

While being only for subscribers, the Xfinity TV app's streaming will be available to subscribers anywhere there's a wireless connection -- not just in the subscriber's home. It appears that Comcast will first roll out on-demand capabilities to the iPad app and then continue to add on-demand titles and Android support later in the year, with live TV viewing coming at some yet-unannounced point. The company promises social networking integration and personal TV recommendations that can be shared with friends in future iterations of the app.

In the meantime, Comcast is now letting subscribers control their cable boxes via their desktop or laptop through the XfinityTV.com Web site. You can change channels or program your DVR -- that is, if you have a compatible cable box. (I, alas, do not.)

You really gotta love how behind cable companies always are when it comes to emerging technologies. As a customer and employee of DISH Network I'm glad that they got behind a true TV Everywhere option much earlier. I've been able to easily watch live TV or my DVR recordings right from my Galaxy S phone or laptop, regardless of where I am, for quite some time now. If you want to be using Comcast's experimental new placeshifting software, go ahead. I'll stick with DISH.
