Despite stepping down as CEO, is Steve Jobs still sticking around to work on an Apple TV?

By | August 25, 2011, 5:17am PDT

Amid the media commotion occurring in the wake of Steve Jobs’ resignation as CEO of Apple, Wall Street Journal tech guru Walt Mossberg has a juicy tidbit about why Jobs has offered to chair the company’s board rather than leave Apple altogether.

On the AllThingsD blog, Mossberg writes that Jobs intends to still be deeply involved with future product development at Apple, and that one product in particular could be getting Jobs’ legendary scrutiny: the long-rumored Apple TV. Or, rather, an Apple HDTV, which has been predicted by some analysts but is still just a rumor.

But, as Business Insider puts it, “Mossberg isn’t going to just toss out some random rumor at the end of a big post on Jobs. This is probably the next big thing Apple has cooking up.” It would certainly be just the type of game-changing product launch that Jobs has masterminded again and again as Apple CEO, so it will be interesting to see if the presumably well-informed Mossberg has some good reasons for legitimizing these rumors.

Do you think Jobs and Apple are working on a TV? Could this be the last great Apple product Jobs personally steers to market? Let us know your thoughts in the Comments section.

oh man! I waited for an Apple HDTV for more than a year, but I thought the rumor may never materialize and bought a Vizio 55 inch with VIA. While I love this TV, I hate to lose more money when Apple releases its HDTV
... Apple TV to be something else than small box as now is very improbable.

I don't see it happening. Apple TV hasn't really taken off in the few years its been produced.

Doesn't make sense. Maybe an Apple TV app running on stock TV hardware. Modern TVs are basically reduced to "dumb monitors". Margins suck, useful lifespan is rediculously long, Apple isn't set up to support or sell such "long term" appliances.

Refried rumor once again.
best health care money can buy and this is it. Future not looking bright...
