Not to be outdone by the rumors that Apple's iTV will (eventually) arrive with a built-in Siri of its own, Google has filed for a patent for a voice-based remote control that would tie into Google TV, according to Patently Apple.

While users would reportedly speak directly to the iTV, Google's plan uses an Android phone or tablet as the intermediary, which would make it more useful for all of the non-iTVs in the world. It would also use Google's cloud services so the user could control multiple devices in the home -- you would specify a device (like "television") before issuing commands.

One cool feature the patent filing describes is the ability to tell your mobile Android device remotely to turn on your set and put on a certain channel so it's ready to go when you get home. One example of how the controls would work details a user asking "When is Seinfeld on?" and then the TV would display a schedule of the next episodes available for viewing.

The patent was filed in September of last year, so there are obviously no details as to when this technology will see the light of day in Google's rapidly developing Android home-based ecosystem. But with the iTV supposedly on the way, and Samsung working on its own voice-based remote, the answer could be sooner rather than later.

    Why do people keep stating that Apple will call it iTV?

    If they do they are going to get sued into oblivion in the UK where ITV is a very popular TV channel

    Eagerly awaiting for this to fail when people are watching sports and yelling at the TV then it starts flipping channels on them.

      @Loverock Davidson-

      If they hold the voice-activated remote close enough to their face to use the voice controls while they're watching sports, it is their own fault.

    I find this interesting because there was a recent survey done that showed, 50% of the iPhone 4s users never bother to use Siri after the initial experience wears off.

      @Peter Perry

      Which is relevant how, exactly?

    Microsoft already has this capability with Xbox360 and Kinect.

      No they don't but thanks for playing.

      (Thinking that Kinect Voice is the same thing merely serves to prove that you didn't understand the article)

        @deusexmachina???? Hmmm, let me see. I pull up Fios by saying "XBox Fios", I turn to my channel by saying the name of the channel. I tell it to pause by saying "XBox, pause". No, that is nothing like it.

        Maybe you've been living under a rock and didn't realize that XBox includes both Fios and Comcast now.

        Methinks it is you living the sub-basement.
        There is a HUGE difference between saying "XBox Fios" and "Siri, can you find out if anyone is airing the episode of "Jericho" where the reconstituted government of the United States first makes contact with the town, and record it to my hard drive."

        Again, XBox Kinect is NOT Siri.
        But once more, thanks for playing.

    Who wants a subwoofer that vibrates the delicate bits inside their TV? I don't know about now. http://canlimacizle-tv.tr.gg/
