Engadget just published a hot tip that will make the living room war with Google TV a lot more interesting. According to the tipster, Apple TV will be back with a vengeance, with a new model running the iPhone OS, supporting 1080p video, and costing just $99.

While it would include 16GB of flash storage, the new version apparently will use cloud-based storage for most viewers’ needs. (Sooner or later, Apple’s purchase of Lala will need to pay off.) As a result, the unit will be a lot smaller, though buyers could still use Apple Time Capsules for external storage. Engadget speculates that since it will run the iPhone OS, apps from the smartphone could also run on your HDTV, which would extend the iPhone-Android war onto a different type of screen.

If true, is this a game changer in the battle for living room supremacy? Let us know your thoughts in the Comments section.

How will touch work on a TV? Are mice supported on iPhone OS?

@rossdav@... Good question. The current Apple TV version uses a remote control for cursor movements and menu selections. There are available apps that allow Apple's mobile devices that incorporate "touch" input to also act as menu selectors.

If this rumor becomes fact, I expect that the multi-touch capabilities of Apple's mobile devices and also multi-touch enabled laptops might be leveraged to supply a better "remote control" experience for a new version of Apple TV . Of course, that last part is just speculation.

You'll need 2 remotes to input multi-touch gestures into AppleTV! How convenient!!!

A big screen alone costs far more than 99$. Its true price structure probably breaks down like this:
    1. OS - 99$
    2. Screen - 999$
    3. One-button Apple-taste mouse - 89,99$
    4. iTune support - 69.99$
    5. iPad compatibility - 49.99$
    6. iPhone ready - 89,95$
    7. Data plan for Cable TV ....
    8. Data plan for everything else ...

They would probably have a separate app store for it. (iPhone apps, iPad apps, now Apple TV apps.) Developers would rewrite their apps (yet again) to take advantage of the large display on a TV, and yes, most likely to be controlled by an iPhone (iPod touch, iPad) or some new kind of multi-touch remote.
That is, if it even will support apps (i doubt it wouldn't, though)

What is up with you and English?!? Seriously, learn to read. NOWHERE did the OP say you HAD to use other multi-touch enabled devices, just that you COULD. Also, they made is QUITE clear they were only speculating.
You should concentrate more on collecting that bridge toll from your villagers, and leave the tech conversation to the humans.

Can't you learn what you are talking about before you post?!? The Apple TV is a set top box, NOT a TV.
Seriously, what's up with you trolls these days!

I vote for the remote App.

The Remote App works great now on the iPod/iPhone. I could see this new AppleTV box coming with wifi capability (hoping finally), so you would be able to use your iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad as the remote, with the Remote App. Or maybe a new specialized touch remote to control all your media for those who don't have a iPod/iPhone. The remote App will be integrated into this specialized Apple remote. One can hope.

Oh and I understand how the above can sound confusing for the ABA's.

  • It's all in the Apps.
Apple has realized that a good portion of their future lies in apps. How many different size Pads can you sell going forward, what is left that can be released?

But they'll all need Apps to work; Apple's future...

I really can't believe people are lining up for this drivel.

I don't use iTunes. This product if officially pointless.

I can stream anything I want from my PC to my TV via my PS3, which has a Blu-ray player in it. I doubt AppleTV will have any such a thing.

    And 16GB of storage? That's 3 Blu-ray movies. Whoop-ti-damn-doo.

@Droid101 So the fact that YOU don't like iTunes makes this product pointless?

My God, send me a list of things you don't like so I can get rid of all the pointless things in my life.../ sarcasm

And sure it has 16GB on board but will also be using cloud services for the rest... which actually is my main objection to it as cloud services are not all that dependable.

  • Funny to watch....
We have NonZealot asking "What is Apple TV?" claiming she's never heard of it... And yet for the past few years she's been slamming Apple TV as an Apple failure? Hmmmmm.

John Zern attacks it as yet another avenue for App sales well i suppose it will be able to run Apps but don't those Apps for the most part make developers rich? Since they will in theory run on the same OS as the iPhone and iPad I suspect that the only concern will be that these Apps will be shown on TV screens which are larger than the iPhone and or iPad and should be considered but hey I don't know for certain but I suspect if a developer has already developed for the iPhone or iPad with will find it easy to develop for the Apple TV as well.

We have another talking up the PS3 and mentioning BlueRay a feature Apple has not included it its products but to date that has not proven to be a problem for Apple so I'm not sure what his point is? That the Apple TV will not serve his needs? OK but nobody claimed it would as far as I can tell.. right? It's almost as if he/she has been insulted or harmed by Apple not taking his/her needs into account? Strange emotional reactions to a product that is only being speculated about so far.. It HAS to be the power of the mystical Apple Logo to some it would seem to be the red flag waved in the face of the bull. I always wondered why the bull reacted in such a manner to the red flag? Would the bull react to another color flag in such a manner or was this just a red thing or a waving something in my face thing?

Wonder if he'll post to Windows phone 7 boards that the newly announced phones won't have Bluray either.
