Is Sony's 24-inch PlayStation 3D HDTV a good deal for $499?

One surprise that Sony pulled out of its hat at the E3 expo this week was the announcement of a 3D display specifically designed for the PS3 owners. But at $499, does it represent a good buy for gamers?

The set represents a bit of an oddity in that its size may be common for a PC monitor, but not so much as a hub for your console gaming. For instance, there are other 24-inch monitors available with LED-backlighting and 3D capabilities for around $100 less than $499, though these tend to rely on passive 3D technology, whereas the Sony display comes with a pair of active-shutter glasses. Active 3D offers better 3D image quality, especially for the fast-action games buyers of a PS3-branded screen would be playing.

Likewise, you could move up to a 32-inch 3D HDTV like the Vizio E3D320VX, currently $478 at Amazon.com, but again, it comes with passive glasses, not active-shutter specs. To get a 32-inch 3D set with active 3D, you’d pay $900 for the Sony Bravia KDL-32EX720.

The PlayStation TV also rolls out Sony’s special two-player mode, which lets a pair of gamers see unique versions of the screen in a multiplayer game, though that would require an additional $69.99 pair of the 3D glasses. It’s obviously a feature that you won’t currently find on any other monitor, though it’s worth will be tied to how well its ultimately implemented. In addition, Sony bundles a copy of Resistance 3, which will be launched around the time this screen will be and is obviously a 3D game.

The PlayStation display doesn’t appear to be outlandishly priced versus the rest of the market, so ultimately its worth comes down to this question: Do you want to play PS3 games in 3D badly enough to play on a 24-inch display, or can you live without 3D and game on a bigger HDTV? Which would you choose? Let us know in the Comments section.

I personally wouldn't play anything on a 24" display...

You say, "Passive Display" like it's a bad thing. Active 3D is already a dead on arrival tech. That's the reason why you go to a movie and NOT pay 60 bucks or more for glasses. It's a bad business model. I would buy a passive 3D display over this and I would wager Sony will eventually replace this with passive, or find a way to build the 'active' part of the tech into the TV itself like some companies are already doing. I like Sony, but not impressed by this offering. They can do better.
Not a bad deal at all. With Resistance 3 ($60), a pair of glasses ($70), and a 6' HDMI cable ($5-$10) included, the 24" TV is about $360. Add another pair of glasses (another $70), though, or local 2-player will be tough. Clarify: the title says 24-inch HDTV, but you compare pricing of 24-inch monitors. Is it an HDTV or a monitor?
LOL Passive Display is for dumb unsuspecting movie goers!.Passive :lowers the resolution almost by half!, and can only be viewed properly at an angle, and also washes out the images full color vibrance.
Who want this ??and your paying more for this degraded 3d picture!!! WTH?
in movies and in gaming!
Ill take Active 3d anytime if I could afford it.
at 24" maybe not? but at 32"!
it might be a sure thing for me since I feel 32" is the sweet spot for 1080p pixel density wise.
until then Im waiting for my 4k true 3d TV's at 42 - 50" and PS4
@gamenerdx I don't think you read this correctly. He said this is an ACTIVE not PASSIVE display.
its a hell of a deal only problem is y such a small screen, i have a 60" hdtv and to go from that to a 24" is just crazy im waiting for the panasonic vt 30 55" its going to be going for a bout 2899,99$, other that that problem it is a great buy for a casual gamer who wants to experience it as well as 3d movies.
It's supposed to be mostly for dorm rooms, bedrooms, etc. Sony isn't obligated to, and wasn't trying to, offer a huge model up for a large living room. Perhaps they will, in time. The draw here is good 3D quality, cheaper active shutter glasses, and a multiplayer option that gets rid of split-screen by letting each player use the whole screen for their own character. That mitigates the smaller size of the screen, since each player has the whole 24" screen to themselves. It's a pretty good confluence of features, 1) for gamers, 2) in smaller room settings.
I think it's a good deal especially since it seem to be designed to be a gateway into 3d for the millions of folks that can't afford $4,000 to 5,000.00 tvs. Can it also play blu-ray 3d movies in 3d?
run some tests and let us know how they perform.
i have my computer connected to my 3D tv and it works fine.
whataya think?

happy
