Nearly every networking company has tried its hand at products for the living room, but not many HDTV manufacturers (if any) have created networking products that you can use with or without connected home theater devices. Vizio, however, is taking a stab at this new market segment, announcing today a dual-band wireless router that can be used for streaming media to reach your TV, or just to another computer on your home network.

The XWR100 is an 802.11n router that can simultaneously transmit data via the 2.4GHz spectrum and the less-used 5GHz frequency. Why would Vizio waste its time on such a device when there are other dual-band routers on the market already? The company claims that its QoS (or Quality of Service) technology can prioritize bandwidth-heavy traffic like streaming video in order to optimize its performance when sent to devices running Vizio Internet Apps, such as the company’s networked HDTVs and Blu-ray players. The XWR100 is due in the third quarter of this year for $99.99.

Vizio hopes you’ll pair its new router with its new dual-band wireless Blu-ray player, the first one on the market. In theory, the VBR231 could access communications apps over the 2.4GHz band while streaming from Netflix or Vudu video services using the 5GHz band. Otherwise, the VBR231 has similar features to the new Wi-Fi-enabled single-band VBR210 and VBR220 players, though only a slight price boost. While the VBR210 and VBR220 are available now for $189.99, the VBR231 will reach the market in July at $199.99.

It looks like a Linksys router with Vizio's brand.

  • Will be interesting to see this trio of products tested...
If they truly did tune the three devices to be more capable when used together, this could be a great idea for those new to these technologies. I could see package deals for all three plus installation appearing at stores. So, how long before Vizio starts selling matching audio systems, super smart remotes, tablets, and even HTPCs? Seems like they're gearing up to be a one-stop solution to gearing your whole digital life. Crazy thing is, their equipment is generally good for being so much cheaper than everyone else. Kudos to Vizio.

I just bought this router from Wal-Mart. I have to say it is quite nice, as I only paid $78.00 for it. I went there to get the Linksys, Cisco router cause I am too impatient to wait for one from tiger or newegg. I got home plugged it in, ( I bought to be an access point) normally I plug the ethernet in one of the ports 1-4 and turn off the DHCP; this router, all that was needed coming from another router was to plug the rj-45 in the internet port as if coming from a modem. Super easy took less than 2 minutes to set up. Haven't tested the dual band yet, I am connected to the 5GHZ right now, I plan to stream a movie to the wii from netflix, and to the PS3 also from netflix, while playing WoW on my laptop. We'll see how it goes. Haven't seen a review for this product anywhere so I figured I put in my two cents.

I must admit I am very new to all of this and just learning. I purchased the Vizio Router (Universal HD Wireless Internet Router) for high definition video and audio streaming. Is this all I need to be able to watch Netflix movies on my TV instead of doing it through PS3 or XBOX. I also have a Belkin Router. My Blueray DVD player is not a wirelss. It is a Sylvania Blueray Player. Can you help?
