Would you let Wal-mart do your home-theater installation?

By | October 25, 2009, 10:57am PDT

Above all else, Wal-mart is about offering the lowest prices possible (seemingly at all costs), but when it comes to electronics products like HDTVs, being the cheapest only gets you so far. Best Buy has remained strong during the recession in thanks to its service offerings, most notably its Geek Squad of techies who can be hired to install that $2,000 home theater you just purchased.

Since the Geek Squad has been a huge cash cow for Best Buy, it shouldn’t come as a total surprise that Wal-mart has made a move to cut into that competitor’s market by announcing that it will offer home theater installation services (as well as other tech support) as the holiday season approaches. But while Best Buy started out hiring the Geek Squad before acquiring the company and integrating it into its stores, Wal-mart is not developing its own tech troop, choosing instead to work with N.E.W. Customer Service Companies (which calls itself “the nation’s leading provider of extended service plans, buyer protection programs and product support for retailers”) to supply the installers.

Wal-mart will charge $99 to install that new TV you brought at the mega-retailer and give you a tutorial on how to use it. It will charge up to $339 for other services, which presumably would entail setting up an entire home theater system—and possibly more. The move follows the decision last month for Sam’s Club, the warehouse brand Wal-mart runs, to use a new supplier (probably N.E.W.) for tech support for electronics purchased at its locations.

Given its price-conscious clientele, will Wal-mart be able to match Best Buy’s success with the Geek Squad with its offering? Would you pay Wal-mart to install your new HDTV or home theater? Or have you already used the Geek Squad for that? Let us know your thoughts and experiences in our TalkBack section.

I, for one am excited about Wal*Mart allowing well-experienced technicians perform their customer?s installations. Everyone nowadays uses a third-party workers--welcome to 2009! And I wish some of you would know what you are talking about...my husband is one of these hired techs! We live 15 minutes away from our local Wal*Mart and they are hiring local, small businesses to do their work for them...again my husband has a college degree and also 5 years experience in this field. In this slow economy where people have been sitting at home not knowing how they will pay their next grocery bill I now thank Wal*Mart for granting my husband's wish of owning his own business to provide their customers with honest, quality work performed by a team of experienced installers which are fully incorporated as well as insured and accessible. I love BestBuy I have purchased all my computers & digital cameras there but I am sorry if I ever had a problem the Geek Squad was always less than helpful even after I paid top dollar for an extension extra warranty plan so YES I will purchase electronics from Wal*Mart and YES I will give local workers whom have performed this work for years my business!!!!!!

Probably not. Not because its Wal-mart although that has some to do with it, but because I don't know who N.E.W. is. I'd rather trust a first party rather than a third party to install a home theater. Only one point of contact there, no guessing who to contact if the installation doesn't go as planned.
Absolutely NOT. Sure Wal-Mart has better than average prices, but I have as yet to find anyone in the electronics department to be very well informed as to hooking things up after purchase. I am a computer technician and speak from experience.

Geek Squad SUCKS! that much I know, being a technician myself. I'll have to wait for more info on NEW. I suspect that your'e gonna get a young underpaid tech with very limited skills juist like you will at BB.

Find the local geek in the neighborhood. It's not too hard to find somebody to connect a few cables.

dont think i would buy a tv from walmart in the first place tbh. I shop at best buy from time to time and they have their price match where they will match local competitors. They installed my tv on the wall and when the hdmi port went bad they come to my house and replaced the tv in home and hung it back up on the wall. doubt wal mart would do that.
Wal-mart and NEW are using the same guys to install for them as Best Buy and some other big electronic stores have. They are using highly trained professionals to perform the installations for them.

No, but then
chrome_slinky@... 25th Oct 2009
I wouldn't be buying anything other than possibly a
television at WalMart. Quality audio and video gear is as
scarce as hen's teeth at that place.
Definitely not! Wal Mart may sell name brands, but the name brands they sell are "cheaped down" from the brands that are sold in regular outlets. The Geek Squad and even the neighborhood techies have the experience. A new Geek from their service would probably be cheaped down too! I want to support our community, not tear it down. Wherever WM goes, there goes the local independants business!
No I don't belive I would, not because it is Wal-mart....actually that's not true, it is because it is Wal-mart. I can't remember the last time I was in a Wal-mart, I think it was about 3 years ago. I don't believe they have gotten any better and I can't believe any company they subcontract out with has quality in mind. This N.E.W. company looks like they are mostly an extended warranty company and just added the in home theater installation business. As far as I have seen most of these extended warranty companies are fly by night ripoffs that operate out of states with lax customer protection laws, so I can't believe quality or customer satisfaction would be words they know the meaning of. I am not saying I would use Best Buy's geek squad either, but definitely No! to Wal-mart.
Wow, what a bunch of mis-informed "Unbiased" idiots
you've got roaming around here. Replace the word Walmart
with Target, and I be half of these answers (or more)
change. first off, IT'S A 3RD PARTY! Most, if not all places
use a 3rd party for something (delivery, install, setup, etc.)
The geek squad is made up of more former 3rd party
people than OG Geeks. And try reading a trade magazine
once in a while. Walmart is carrying most of the major
brands that BBY and others are carrying. Same models. It's
a focus of their stores now. And to the moron that "Hadn't
been in a Walmart in 3 years, but they probably hadn't
changed." Way to give an informed opinion JA. Yeah, I
heard that book's terrible. The cover has a picture I don't
like on it.
