10 things I hate about Twitter

Summary: Chris loves it, Jen never shuts up about it, Dennis uses it “for work purposes“, and even my editor-in-chief uses it. So why can’t I get my head around it? Why have I tried to use it on three separate occasions and still can’t stand using it? Why is Twitter only there for the obvious [...]

Chris loves it, Jen never shuts up about it, Dennis uses it “for work purposes“, and even my editor-in-chief uses it. So why can’t I get my head around it? Why have I tried to use it on three separate occasions and still can’t stand using it? Why is Twitter only there for the obvious idiot or the social networking junkie?

1. @people: yes, this is a practical way to get in touch with people, but it’s now spread to emails. Some of my colleagues, extended and otherwise, use @zackwhittaker to get in touch with me, when it just drives me mad. You’ve carbon copied me on the email, you would have thought that would make more sense. I have a BlackBerry now; I can see emails wherever I am in the world. Feel free to cc me in on an email, but use my name rather than @zackwhittaker, because it just pisses me off.

2. Copycat websites: without Twitter, we wouldn’t have the major updates on Facebook which have infuriated over a million people as a result. Without Twitter, we wouldn’t have other copycat websites such as Friendfeed. I’m sure they all have a very important part to play, but I don’t particularly want my social networks to collide in the middle. Copycat “Twitter-like” websites just use up valuable space on the web, and infuriate me more.

3. Constantly connected: the fact of the matter when it comes to Twitter is that you have to be constantly on the site to make sure you are keeping up to date with conversations and suchlike. If you go for breakfast and are without your Twitter application on your phone, you might have a fit when you realise your wife is leaving you over Twitter because you failed to respond to her “tweets”, or something like that. Who the hell in their right mind would need to update their status three times an hour from “giggly” to “cautious”?

4. Non-threaded conversations: threads are important in conversation as it helps you keep track of what has been said. With Facebook, you have that magic Wall-to-Wall button so you can see a threaded conversation between two people, but you can’t on Twitter. The most annoying thing about this? The fact you can’t spy on other people and tweet-stalk them.

5. Tweetdecks: applications which run locally on your computer allow you to keep more up to date with Twitter. What I want to know is how people actually get work done, or get laid for that matter. “zackwhittaker is surging (23:45)”, and “zackwhittaker is spent (23:47)”. If anything, it just shows how sad we are as an international entity, spending our entire time on Twitter. Aliens invading would be disappointed.

6. Shortcut links: what drives me to insanity, and on one occasion, smashing the crap out of my computer, was a shortcut link which appeared perfectly innocent, but linked to a website of two girls and one cup. Such links as http://tinyurl.com/dlwgv7 and http://is.gd/3Ncx; one is this blog, and the other is unsafe for work. Which is which? You can’t tell because the shortcut links are pure evil and some of my friends are now refusing to even click on them. They’re a waste of time and designed for Twitter; a hating-double-whammy.

7. Retweeting: what is the point in retweeting something? Essentially, retweeting is the practice of posting the same thing of which someone else has posted, again, and again, and again. Nobody benefits from this unless it’s some viral campaign or a really important or interesting blog post; fair enough, but it just plain irritates the hell out of me. “Oh yeah, I’m retweeting this from somebody else to show my individuality to the world”; shut up, you are clearly an idiot.

8. Weird backgrounds: you can easily change your background on Twitter to express your individualism and unique ability in a certain area. This is a good thing. But when people treat Twitter as if it is MySpace a few years ago, by having ridiculously colourful and difficult to focus backgrounds, this is wrong and should be criminalised by law. I don’t particularly want to have a fit first thing in the morning by looking at some quirky background which screws with my eyes. I find it difficult enough to get out of bed in the morning, without resorting to spending the rest of the day in a hospital one. Jason Perlow, consider yourself a bit of an idiot. I still love you to bits, you big, cuddly man.

9. Twitter whoring: this is something I do now because I can think of no other way of communicating with “my people”, by simply whoring myself and this blog on there. This still annoys the hell out of me because it’s like other blogs out there, which just reproduce links and stories from other places; aggregator blogs. Eurgh.

10. 140 characters: it’s not enough to write anything, and it’s the same amount of space you get in a text message. This is why you’ll find my text message balance is currently 600 out of 600 this month, because texting people (the modern day equivalent of Twitter private messaging) isn’t enough to get anything across. Either way, a phone call or an email makes a lot more sense, so bloody well use it.

Do you hate Twitter as much as me, or does your life revolve around it? Are you getting sick of people of tweeting you random crap which you couldn't care less about, or are you the purportrator behind such a thing? Has Twitter become a thing of the past or is it only just starting? Leave your comments here.

The simple explanation is that to embrace Twitter you need to be a twit. Rejecting Twitter does not indicate your non-twit status but it certainly stacks the odds in your favor.

I've worked with kids with ADHD; looking forward to putting an idea forward to the grants council for research into ADHD (ADD) sufferers and Twitter; could be an interesting outcome, lets them blow off some steam, perhaps.

Don't own a twitter account, but that sorta reflects my thoughts about social networking in general. Never really got the point of them. I guess having one social networking account may make sense to keep track of relatives and friends, but beyond that I don't see much of a point at all with something like Twitter.

I am a major Twitter user and found this post hysterical.
To your further annoyance, I have created yet another way
to use Twitter called Twitterface and will be launching it
soon. Apologies for offending! LOL!

Seriously, excellent observations about the things that
annoy many of us on Twitter. But the people I hang with,
learn from and who have become part of my life are the
reason I'm addicted. Twitter the software, sucks and some
folks are going to be lame and post TMI tweets or try to
sell you something (like people do in person also) but by
and large, the chance to get to know all these people has
enriched my life. Sorry you hate it! happy

For me, Facebook has been a great tool for keeping in touch with distant friends. I wouldn't lump it in with the rest. It's definitely been a markedly positive thing in my life.

I deeply agree with this, but mostly with the lack of threading. When I see someone I'm following say "@user123 good idea," how is this helping me in any way.

I like the idea of microblog/status messages. But twitter does it wrong. Facebok is closer. And outside of microblogging, guess what? RSS works perfectly when I want to see headlines from a blog or news site. Perfectly.

Twitter is the emperor with no clothes, and it's mind-boggling that something so useless and stupid has become so popular.

I completely agree with you Zack! I just can't find the usefulness of twitter. Actually I think twitter will make people dumber and actually has less communication due to the 140 character limit. Its almost like leet speak all over again, "Hey i need u 2 go 2 the store."

The best line of your blog post though had to be this gem:
What I want to know is how people actually get work done, or get laid for that matter.

LOL!

The only use I have for twitter, is to follow the news of my favorite sports teams. I don't post anything on it.

I agree with almost all of the points made though, so unless any major changes are made, that is all the involvement of twitter I will have.

One wonders why Twitter users -- Twits, to me -- don't have anything else better to do, such as working. Given the level of drivel, it reminds me of what a comedienne friend of mine once said in her stand-up routine: "My mother always told me, 'Marilyn, no one wants to know about your period.'"

I use twitter as a single-subject updater, in a specific tech community - I follow about 25 of the gurus of that community, get their updates, tutorials and notices about the issues I care about, and I get none of the "Hey I just had an ice cream cone" crap that you get from following friends or celebrities.

Just keep your twitter feed relevant to a single subject for updates, you can alsways search on other things if you feel like it.

I have 1 reason to hate this:
It's full of TWITS!
I have enough dealing with corporates daylong that are twits without chatting with more at night!
Let the TWIT rule! Oups, they already do! The era of the low-IQ continues!

JoeMama_z 24th Apr 2009
1. It's opt in marketing, WTF? why do I spend so much time dealing with spam just to go and subscribe to it's RSS feed.

2. For the few occations it isn't used to market crap It's replacing something useful, blogs, with something less.

I created a Twitter account not long ago to explore the hype and I was not impressed. Its "usefulness" to the average schmuck is the ability to broadcast short messages in a manner compatible with mobile phones.

It's like Ecstasy for the attention-deficit Crackberry community.
Nuff said.

I love it! Your column that is.

It's about time someone starting social networking bashing. I work on the 'Net not live on it.

I live in my home, enjoy hanging with face-to-face friends over a coffee or a cuppa at the local cafe, enjoy a good euchre or poker game, I can even get into the occasional computer game, but social networking on what is still a wild frontier where clicking a simple link can blow the hell out of my computer ... well for me social networking has a VERY long way to grow and grow up.

Regardless of Presidents and corporations jumping aboard and blatantly attempting to manipulate the masses well ... you know where I'm going with this ... you've got me into a full blown rant with a sentence challenging the Guiness World Record for speed typing.

Thanks for FINALLY standing up and telling all these TWITS and FACES who want to be "friends' to shut the hell up!

I've tried... and tried... and I just don't get it.

The only people that get it are people who have no life away from a keyboard.

Between text/picture messaging on my cell... email... IM's... I feel I'm as connected as I want or need to be with anyone in my life.

The only person I need to be closer to is my partner... and well, tweets don't cut it there.

The beauty of the web...
ericesque 26th Apr 2009
is that every site or service you make use of is
entirely your choice. If it makes you so irate, don't
twitter.

I boycotted facebook for 2 years. Although I'm using
facebook again, I never missed a step.

If you got a real job where you can't spend your whole
day playing with your blackberry and socializing on
various websites, perhaps you wouldn't be so
distraught by twitter's existence.

It's nowhere near that simple.
mikekayb Updated - 26th Apr 2009
That's entirely unrealistic. I'm not on Twitter, but I am forced to deal with it constantly. My facebook wall is plastered with self-centered, incomprehensible-jargon-laden tweets, people I do business with have presumptuously chosen to rely on Twitter for releasing information to their clients, and that's not to mention that Facebook's UI was incomprehensibly butchered, and useful functionality removed, to make it more like Twitter. Twitter has proven, for me, to be unavoidable and incredibly annoying. So it's not a simple matter of, "If it irritates you, don't use it." I'm subjected to it, unwillingly and constantly.

....then don't use it. No one is forcing you. Some people
are doing a lot of business from twitter, some people
like communicating that way. Good for them.
All of the "social media" tools, including online forums,
serve a purpose to someone, but not everyone. You are
allowed to not "get it". Believe it or not there are a
lot of people who think forums like this are a waste of
time.
