Dell Streak vs. the tablet market: It doesn't fit and never will

By | May 25, 2010, 10:45am PDT

Summary: The tablet market is becoming saturated and watered down with iPad-lookalikes and devices which offer nothing besides the anti-Apple alternative. Will the Dell Streak change things?

The Dell Streak. Everybody is talking about it as the high and mighty product of the year. But it isn’t, and doesn’t give anything back to the market except a bridge between a smartphone and an iPad, which even then it fails to really grab the eye.

Rory Cellan-Jones, the BBC technology reporter, says it all by not saying anything. He fails to disclose anything exciting or new about the device - which is not to his failing, no - not at all. It’s because there isn’t anything to say.

In short, there is nothing to this device that others have or don’t have. It doesn’t shout out to me, it’s nothing special and has no appealing features which would grab the student market.

I sincerely cannot understand why so many people are talking about this phone slash tablet come smart-device, because this device exists in so many others. It will run the mobile Android 1.6 OS with an upgrade later on this year, just like the Nexus One, except it’s smaller and actually fits into the pocket. The Dell Streak probably won’t fit into most jeans’ pockets.

The one thing this tablet has in benefit to the wider market is the ability to run the Android operating system. It’s free and advanced, so it allows open-source to get out there into the world. But this entire tablet market will fall flat on its face with the student community as students just don’t care.

If it ain’t got a keyboard, then it ain’t work jack. And if it isn’t an iPad or a smartphone, then there isn’t any middle ground to gain. What could possibly gain from a slightly larger phone which doesn’t even have the cool factor of the iPad?

Nothing, and neither will any other tablet device. And that’s why I drink.

What are you talking about
bobiroc 25th May 2010
This device is to android based phones to what the iPad is to the iPhone or iPod touch. Same thing with a bigger screen. The fact that you think the iPad is so much more than it's smaller siblings is kind of disturbing.

Oh I forgot you fell for the Apple "Cool Factor". I guess there are still some weak minded people that fall for the marketing tactics. If you are buying an iPad because you think it will make you "cool" then I got some bad news for you.

@bobiroc It's not even what the iPad is to the iPod touch... the iPad has a 10" screen, the Streak only has a 5" screen... not much bigger really than many smartphones.

The iPad is neat but really it's my iPhone with a larger screen, no jailbreak, and no cellular capability...
@bobiroc No the Dell isn't that much bigger than a phone to make it much better (like the iPad) but it is still too big to have the pocket-ability of the Nexus One (Desire, Droid - whatever). The Streak is too big as a phone too small as an iPad competitor. Nothing to do with "falling for Apple 'Cool Factor'" but a badly thought out product.

The device needs to be between 8" - 11" also Android needs a "do over" for the bigger screen (just like the iPhone OS got when it moved to the iPad). There is no reason this couldn't be done, but until it is done the iPad won't have a serious competitor. I'd expect this to hot up in Q3 or more likely Q4 of this year.

@gluonspring:

The fact that they have other sizes doesn't change the fact that THIS product isn't "Tablet Size". I think 7" is probably wrong, the 10" sounds about right (size wise). Android will need work to make it workable on the larger sizes (like Apple did to iPhone OS for the iPad).
@Jeremy-UK Is everyone here new to tech news? I keep seeing people saying it needs to be bigger. ??? Dell has already leaked their plans for both a 7" and 10" model of the Streak due out Nov and Jan respectively. So with 5", 7", and 10" models there should be a size for everyone. Or, if you want smaller, one of the many Dell phones. Dell has a pretty complete line-up size wise. Whether or not they deliver on anything else remains to be seen, but they've got the sizes covered.
I laugh when people say the only reason Apple is successful is because of marketing, as if other companies don't have the money to advertise or haven't thought of it. But in a sense, you're right, if you use the true definition of marketing: Apple understands a market and produces products that target a specific segment of that market: non-geeks who don't care how it works and don't care to fiddle under the hood. They just want some that does what they want, works well, and is easy to use.
@rynning
Thanks - as a marketer I always felt a bit insulted by those "it's-just-marketing" definitions of iThings success:)
Marketing tells what's going to be produced, why and for whom. Than yes, Apple has got it best.
@rynning although what you're saying is true, there is a half-tonne of geeks who jail break, hack and otherwise lift up the bonnet on all Apple products. I know Apple don't target them, but they are there, none-the-less, making the market more enjoyable for those of us who do care how it works.
@rynning ...I laugh when people say the only reason Apple is successful is because of marketing,...

Marketing and pretty boxes. Apple has a history of jumping from OS to OS and platform to platform in a sometimes desperate race to keep pace with Microsoft/Intel, finally settling on the much maligned, by Apple fans, commodity PC. Oh, and their OS: BSD kernel which had, along with Linux, been dissed for years by the Apple Fanatics. There are more Android phones sold than iPhones and the Android phones have a better user experience. Soon, Apple will once again be scrambling to keep pace.

It should have been bigger
dvigilante1@... 25th May 2010
The only problem I see with the tablet is the size. It should have been the same size as the ipad. Also, if it priced in the $400 range (which more than likely it will) the Streak will be a fail. I would like to see an ipad sized tablet with Android or Webos priced around $200 - $300. That way the devices could be sold to schools as textbook replacements. That is were I think the ipad went wrong. They could have cornered the education segment. Instead they overpriced it (like all apple products) and will instead sell the device to a niche market.

Sorry but aren't schools the niche market here? Apple is smart in going after the larger consumer market, schools will incorporate it if needed (as some already have).
@dave95. -
This is where the education market is vastly misunderstood. Companies like Apple or Dell can easily sell 200 units in one education order and with 1:1 inititives being the hot buzz, this adds up to a whole lot of orders.
By not having more enterprise class apps available for education, Apple is looking less attractive to thos buyers than does the Andriod market (which is also easier to get apps developed for imho). Education, be is k12 or college, is a lot tougher network enviroment than consumer or SMB by far.
@dave95.
Yes, and a lower price never sells well in the larger, consumer market. I want to see these things compete with netbooks. The iPad does not effectively do that because it is overpriced.

FTH
@dvigilante1@... I believe it's going to be sold on contract with a phone carrier, so it'll be subsidized like any other phone. Also, as I mentioned in another reply, Dell is going to make a 7" and 10" model later this year, so there will be three sizes of this thing.
Ditto the iPad. I wonder why you omitted a reference to the fact that the iPad already existed in the iPhone.

But the part that I find more interesting is this one:
"I sincerely cannot understand why so many people are talking about this phone slash tablet come smart-device..."

Yup... you took those words out of mouth but I wonder why you felt the urge to put them to 'paper' and completely forgot to mention the fact that the iPad suffers from the exact same illness.
@OS Reload Maybe because the iPad doesn't suffer from the exact same illness. Considering the record-setting pace iPads are selling, they've obviously got something going for them beyond mere marketing and "Apple fanboys."

why everybody wants to market an "alternative" to a tablet that is so much less useful?

So what did you expect?
cornpie 25th May 2010
It's Android on a somewhat bigger screen. We pretty much already know what Android is all about so why would you expect any surprises?
@cornpie

It is just funny that the iPad is not subjected to the same observations.

iPad - iPod Touch/iPhone OS with a bigger screen. That is all.
You are obviously taking silver from jobs... It's fast, has flas, is a phone, a camera...Dude, get a job...
@philaxis Actually, no.
It's fast: But no faster than the competition and less stable as well.
Has Flash: Which doesn't even work right on Android 2.2, much less 1.6.
Is a phone: which makes it no better than any other Android smart phone, and less portable.
A camera: Granted, but then so does nearly every other smart phone.

Dude, he's a student. He's already working three jobs.

talk of the town

zack, no one is talking about the streak. maybe some techtards here at zdnet, but surely nowhere else. a pmp with a 5" screen? woah, dell will surely succeed where archos has been failing for years now. what is next? 7". damn, archos already has that too. no one is buying. let's cut the bs and wait for some real ipad killers.
@banned from zdnet Um, yeah, a 7" is on the way too. happy

I honestly don't understand the thinking that if a device doesn't "kill the iPad", it is useless. Someone is buying Archos tablets, apparently, since they continue to do business. Surely Dell can sell a little better than that, since people have actually heard of Dell. Perhaps one need not dominate the market to make money?
@banned from zdnet
iPad killers? Like there's actually a NEED to create a device that can compete with such a useless waste of technology. No one's interested in that market, having one just makes you look stupid
Really ZDNet? Why did you hire this kid? I bet he's someone's son there in the office. Just in case you haven't heard bud, Apple isn't the cool factor anymore. I'm the college student that observes other students laugh and chuckle at people pulling out their iPads on the bus. Its not cool if Everyone has one. Case and point, "Oh, you have an iPhone!?!?, so does my mom" -really cool. But seriously, I admire your effort to stand out as a young aspiring journalist, your words of wisdom really benefit those seeking more knowledge on this device */sarcasm*. Your sources and supporting data prove that you have an opinion, that no one else supports. Might I say though, that ending quip about drinking says it all. Keep drinking, keep writing articles under the influence, and please ZDNet, fire this idiot with a keyboard.

@timmway I don't see a striking resemblance between myself and my editor-in-chief, but nevertheless we are all in some way descendents of the Vikings. I think you've just committed libel...? Either way, it's not true but I'm kind of glad that you managed to get your little rant out there in the public, in hope that it'll satisfy that crushing spirit you are so deeply running out of. I truly hope you find happiness somewhere - even if, like me, it falls at the bottom of a liquor bottle.
@zwhittaker I have found happiness, but Zach this article is not reporting. Would you turn this in to a professor if you were tasked with writing about new emerging technology? You are just regurgitating what you and your buddies rant about between class. If you want to write about how you dislike this new device, go pick one up first and actually use it. List out some new specs and info no one else has reported on. Find out why people are moving to Android and leaving Apple as per the current excitement over this device. You can still get in your opinion like a solid writer does, but you don't have to do it while making yourself look uninformed.

What the hell is that thing?

Seriously? Is it a smartphone, or a tablet?

Why the heck would I buy something that small to function as a tablet computer?

I agree with Zack, it fails. Whatever it is.

If you don't like it,
becabill 30th May 2010
@NStalnecker
don't buy it. If enough people like it, I probably won"t fail. Only time and Dell's bottom line will tell, not idiot bloggers.
No, it obviously is not an ipad, maybe it wasn't meant to be. Maybe Dell has no intent to have it pidgeonholed by people who haven't even tried it, and who have a prejudice against the products that don't start with *i*.
Spoken like a true Mac zealot!
@steveh99 I think you have that backwards; Mac users are Cultists, anti-Apple users are Zealots.

Interestingly enough, Apple Cultists tend to use logic and debating skills to discuss their tool of choice, while anti-Apple Zealots use nothing but raw emotion.

ROFLMMFAO!!! You are new here, right? Either that or you are reading the MacTard posts through an amazing filter. Logic? Debating skills? Indeed!
@vulpine@...
er, wrong way round. mac fans are like the christian fundamentalist movement in the usa - no chance of reasoned discussion, as soon as you ask "what is it for" the cries of heresy and unbeliever are heard.

Doesn't bring anything new? Really?
Richard in Phoenix Updated - 25th May 2010
Did you miss the part where it is also a PHONE? Voice, 3G data, 5" high-resolution display, and portability (at least for us grownups who usually wear slacks, not jeans). I love this form factor. Dell is wrong to position this as a "tablet" though...it is a smartphone, and should be marketed the same way as the HTC HD2.
If the Streak is about more than just wifi (albeit, supporting EVDO or USB), then the device can carve out quite a bit more than the iPad (which, other than the wifi-only models is chained to the bandwidth-starved provider that is AT&T Mobility), especially on campuses (both collegiate and non) that are poorly-served (or just plain non-served) by the bandwidth-challenged provider. USB as an option kicks open the door for VZW, T-Mobile, Cricket, or even (eek!) *Clearwire*; does iPad support USB?

Tablet devices, to be successful, must be network-agnostic; the only network-agnostic iPads are the wifi models (and even there, with no support for USB, they have become urban cheese that chains their users to hotspot-only ranges).
VERY POOR JOURNALISM.

This is a straight up trash piece. In fact I wouldn't call this journalism at all.

If this was a real article, it would be a piece describing what the device is, what it's about, what it does - or at least what you know about it - THEN offering some sort of opinion on it.

Instead, this is solid opinion all the way through. Talk about positioning in the market, how students dont care - this is all empty comment. I gained nothing from this piece, other than the fact that Zack wants to be cool with the kids.

iPad "cool factor"? Please!

Also, I think you meant "ain't WORTH jack" not work!!

I seriously believe ZDNet's standard of reporting has lowered in general. This piece is but one example. Please write some articles with some real content in them. Anyone can write empty opinion pieces.

I want my dislike button back. sad

Quality of Article
nyyet 25th May 2010
Dress it up any way that you like, it is still a cra**y article. There is no technical reporting on the product at all, just vague opinions about its place in the market. I hope you are not taking journalism or the industry will be in worse shape.
@nyye He graduated with a BA in Criminology. I think that says enough about how qualified he is to judge social trends and current technology.
Hehehe... very skeptical aren't you!
Seems pretty fast and handy, although a bit unwieldy to be honest. And moreover it's got an indestructable screen!
@Erahgon Hey Zach! Here is a perfect example of a feature no other device currently offers. I'm learning more from the comments than your reporting.
I have an iPad, it's great with a nice big screen. I have never taken it out of my house, though. There's no way you're going to slip it into your pocket and take it shopping or to the movies or something. Ball parks ban iPads and laptops, for instance. The iPad probably could go anywhere, but in practice: it won't be taken everywhere, not at all.
.
There will be a lot of room for a decent tablet that lets you browse and watch stuff on a screen larger than a phone, but isn't so big that you can't take it nearly everywhere. I think 5" will be a pretty good size for a lot of people.
"What could possibly gain from a slightly larger phone which doesn?t even have the cool factor of the iPad?" Porn? Students still like that don't they? Its to bad the days are gone when students were poor and having options actually mattered too.

Heck I wouldn't have even read this (I don't care about the Streak either) except that your article summary has nothing to do with this article. Damn RSS.
I doubt it'll be a home run, but I'm interested. On my wife's iPhone I use maps, and web browsing, and simple games, and eReaders. All of that would be better with a larger screen, and at the "pocketable" size (I'm happy with jacket coat pocketable), every 1/2" makes a difference. The one thing I really want to do on-the-go that I can't on the iPhone is read journal article PDFs. The iPhone is just too small. I need to be able to resize the article so that I can read one article column without panning, and read the captions on typical figures without zooming or panning. I need color too, so Kindle is out. I've been tempted by an iPad, but it's really a bit too large for me to carry it around all of the time. So I'm looking for the smallest device I can read journal article PDFs on, something I can carry all of the time. The Streak might be it. Or maybe not. I won't know until I hold one in my hands and look at a PDF.

Personally, I hope the market is very diverse, with lots of different tablet/phone sizes, lots of different form factors and feature sets. I think consumers are ill served by companies only aiming for the one killer product, and I appreciate companies who are willing to sell niche products in addition to their blockbusters.
@gluonspring
Does "tempted by an iPad" mean you have actually used one, or at least held one in your hand? If not, take yourself to an Apple store and play with one--if it doesn't suit you, you will know for sure. If you do see value for your specific uses, you will know for sure.

Maybe not...
becabill 30th May 2010
@frabjous
Maybe he won't decide until he's seen a selection of competing products. I for one don't buy the first thing I see, I want a selection, even if I have to wait for the market to develop around real needs, not hype, and certainly not the *cool factor*.
Would I buy a Streak? Well, if it means I can carry one less device around with me, quite possibly. The iPad looks and feels great, but it isn't a phone, can't display Flash, can't multitask, is locked down and the definition is no better than the Streak (just a bigger, less convenient form factor). Battery life will be an important consideration, though.
Here's the problem with the iPad... You NEED a computer to plug in to, in order to transfer files and (stupidly enough) to update the OS.

Android devices do this over the air, and don't require a stupid, buggy, bloatware (iTunes) installed on a separate machine just to make it work.
i purposely bought the Dell Streak Tablet because it was smaller than the iPad! all the people who have seen my tablet, say, wow! that's cool! what is it? i've never seen anything like that! a teenager loved playing with it when he came to my house- he loved it! btw- i don't buy for coolness, i buy for usefulness.
