Hotmail users complain of deleted emails: Live@edu unaffected

By | January 1, 2011, 6:02pm PST

Some Hotmail users are complaining on Microsoft feedback forums that some of their content is missing or has been deleted. Over 470 people have complained on Windows Live forums, saying that the majority of their email has been moved into their deleted folders, according to AP.

Microsoft has acknowledged that a problem exists, though no timeline has been given on how long it will take for the solution to be rolled out. It does not appear that many of the 360 million global users are affected.

Microsoft spokeswoman, Catherine Brooker said “At this point it appears to be a limited issue, and Microsoft is working with individual users who are impacted. We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers”, but declined to comment on what has caused the problem.

While Live@edu’s Outlook Live, an email service provided by Microsoft for students at school, college and universities are hosted in the same datacenters, it appears that data loss is limited only to Hotmail at this time.

Good day to confirm this comment I would appreciate T h e b e s t o f Z D N e t d e l i v e r e d your website very nice to everyone Yes, Oracle is the only one with shared-disk architecture, but that is there advantage. It means you can add or remove nodes and the database lives on. In a shared nothing architecture, if you lose a node, you lose the system. I'm sure Oracle appreciates EMC highlighting their advantage.I also desire to signal in your RSS feeds. Thank you as soon as once again and maintain up the great operate Awesome post! Thank you very much || thanks for nice content this is really benefit to me.

Privacy Issues
statuskwo5 Updated - 1st Jan 2011
@shellcodes_coder The problem with that idea is that all your email messages are NOT protected when it comes to privacy. That being said, I have Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, Hotmail, and even AIM Mail, but I do understand the shortcomings that come with each service.
@statuskwo5 No e-mail is private, unless it's on some encrypted mail system. E-mails are "deposited" on various servers as they make their way between senders and recipients, and just about anyone having access to the servers can read them. So you shouldn't feel safer with Hotmail, Yahoo, your ISP's e-mail system, etc...

Just switch from Gmail to Hotmail. Thanks for the tip. Google need to snoop through email to find "suitable" ads for yours truly.
@day2die If you think that any free email service is free of snooping then you are just not aware of the full picture everything out there in the Internet is to profile us so just use the best and forget about privacy by keeping your important data on your disk drive.
And by the way I can't even bare logging into my hotmail it's soooo dam slow.
@Qussay Najjar
This isn't 2005 anymore. Hotmail is now really fast.
Everything is ok here.It's probably an isolated incident
@g@...

It's probably related to the priority mailbox that's similar to Gmail's new feature. They are probably there but they just can't find them. Usually "isolated incident" combined with a new feature equates to user error.

All my emails were deleted in April 2010. I contacted Windowslive Help and was told that my account was Inactive. It cannot be true because I open my email several times a week!

I lost a large number of emails as I used the account for about 10 years.

As a result, I am using other email services for all my important emails, as Hotmail cannot be considered secure or reliable.

@rajklon You are an idiot for keeping your email stored in a FREE account. You aren't paying a dime to store and backup the data.

To them, your email is just JUNK taking space. Don't complain when something happen to your "important" data due to your own personal irresponsibility.

@wackoae Doesn't matter. Any email hosted within the US is still vulnerable to the US P.Act. Kinda makes any email system, private or public, relatively insecure.

Zack, what you don't understand is that most Internet connections cross into US territory via a US-based backbone (or a US-based backbone company) anyway, placing their transmissions under the jurisdiction of the Patriot Act. This is why arguments about cloud computing are moot. If you want to compute online, it doesn't matter which provider you use. If you don't want to be susceptible to the US Patriot Act, cloud computing is just not an option, and this is a problem that will keep cloud computing from reaching mass appeal.

fun game for people in tech. support
helpmehelpu2 13th Apr 2011
One of my coworkers pointed out this little gem.

Ok, when you are reading a tech support email - and the person on the other end is just _dumb as dirt_ like doesnt get it on multiple levels. Asks questions answered in the FAQ. Asks just the most absurd things to the point where you look around for the camera....well here is what you do...slowly move your mouse up to the headers...wait for it (oh tingling) show headers...bam! Yep you guessed it another hotmail user! Plonk

Dont even answer em. They are too stupid to be helped.

We have a system that sends out report emails to keep users up2date on systems they need to monitor. We tell people upfront not to use hotmail....why?

Because altho its now getting some press. People on the inside have known for years that hotmail is unreliable crap. It has been deleting peoples emails for _years_ without a bounce! People (are hotmail users people?)just never knew. They won't learn tho. Hotmail users _can't_ learn. It is how their limited brain is. Sad but true.

Mike
