Twitter is probably the only online tool where people get excited when they are followed by strangers. Apart from the usual news updates, gossip and stalking your friends, it can also be used to make contact with people you have never met, and it is socially acceptable to initiate 140-character conversation.

The motives are varied -- in order to keep updated on a public figure, to pitch a press release, or simply to connect with someone you find interesting. For one high school student, Twitter was a way to realize a dream: to take a porn star to prom.

18-year-old Mike Stone from Tartan High School in Minnesota was determined to find a prom date from the selective pool of the adult industry. So, determined, the high school student sent out over 600 messages into the Twitterverse, trying to track down a willing date from a source full of spam and fake profiles.

Incredibly, he succeeded. Megan Piper, 19, after viewing his Twitter profile -- headline 'I'm awesome' notwithstanding -- agreed.

Stone says he 'was just thinking of doing something new' when he began tweeting messages to porn stars, as well as several celebrities.

"I was like, let's try it out and see if it works. I just think they're really cute and I wish I had one for a prom date."

The adult entertainer had never been to a prom, and so agreed as long as her transport costs from Los Angeles to Oakdale were covered by the student. In the meantime, Piper tweeted inquiries about the best places to buy prom dresses.

However, after Tartan High School discovered the plans, they barred the porn star from the venue. According to MSNBC, the statement was thus:

Megan Piper's "attendance would be prohibited under Tartan's standard prom procedures and would be inconsistent with two school district policies, in order to keep the school safe from 'activity that may be disruptive'".

The tagline #Porn4Prom has resulted in a number of amusing messages of support aimed at Stone and his date, including a new appeal for PayPal donations to fund a separate prom venue.

Piper may not have realized just how much of a PR campaign her original agreement has become, but with Pornhub offering to host and pay for an alternative event, it does remind us that Twitter can be used for far more than simply tweeting about your breakfast plans.

  • Really?

Damn why didn't we have these tools when I was 18!?!?! =D

    • because

it would've gotten us into more trouble than we were already getting into at 18? :)

  • Finally ...

Finally a smart use for Twitter.

    Congratulations, Mike Stone. :)

    • Useless

A smart use of Twitter is useless given the "holier than thou' school of Mike. He need to learn his place and realize he cannot be at a prom regardless of whether any other girl wanted to go with him. B@st@rds

  • When I was 18? [...]

"Being eighteen is the only reason this "Tweet" even made it into the news... The school is the real victim here should at this time of life those two would have hooked up."

    • Eh?

An 18 yr old goes to prom with a 19yr old.

How is the school a victim?

  • Well, if the school doesn't want outsiders

(which always runs the risk of someone deemed nefarious, although I'm sure Ms Piper is a sweet girl)

... then they need to institute a policy of only internal students to the School sanctioned prom. This makes things more difficult for kids dating other kids from other schools but eliminates a lot of headaches.

    • Would make it really difficult at single sex schools (for most)!

      • Difficult, but not impossible

Just depends on the "flexibility of the dance card". (probably the best euphemism I've ever heard on Doctor Who)

But seriously - If its a single sex school, then why would there be a school sanctioned prom? The whole point of single sex schools is to keep the whole "aren't they cute?" and the drooling to a minimum to focus on proper education. (me personally, that would've drove me nuts, but I ain't judging, just pointing out the irony of dances at same sex schools)

      • Single Sex Schools are almost Non-existant

This is the 21st century, you are talking 70's-80's maybe 90s. Unless you're talking about a Private "preppy" school.

    • When I was 19...

I went to 4 proms in one year. I didn't cause any disruptions. It was cheaper for me to buy a tuxedo than rent them.

      • Good for you...

...But is sounds more like bragging... Did you buy or rent the corsages??

  • Next the school will be wanting Twitter passwords to vet your 'friends'

    • and what makes you think some haven't already tried that?

if employers are doing it during interviews, why wouldn't a school take a stab at it? Particularly when some schools have disciplined students on things stated on FB or Twitter away from school?

  • But bringing the class slut is ok...

every school has them. They're just not on film and don't get paid. So what's the real difference. The kids all know who they are, and i'm sure some of the teachers do too. Props to the kid.

    • Agreed..

Forgetting what Megan does for a living. Megan was nice enough to accept the invitation when we doesn't have to and was reasonable with her terms. Compare that with those in his class and who's got the better character?

  • Poor Kid

I seriously doubt he's getting any.

    • Who cares?

Seriously! Do you know what it'll do to his street cred?
