MySpace: More layoffs expected; predictions of closure imminent

By | June 27, 2011, 5:49pm PDT

Summary: MySpace is expected to lay off even more staff — nearly a third of its current 400 employees. Predictions stand true: it will close by the year’s end.

An inside source at MySpace disclosed to news sources that over a third of its staff is to be cut in the coming days.

Over 150 members of staff will be shed this week — according to these insider sources — although the timing has yet to be confirmed with a statement from the company, which is so far not saying anything.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise, with nearly half of its staff being let go earlier on this year.

Along with haemorrhaging user figures, MySpace has been on borrowed time for quite some time.

Though MySpace is not used by the very vast majority of the Generation Y nowadays, the memories of ‘once was’ will resonate through this entire demographic.

It is hard to think of a time without Facebook, but there was. MySpace filled that gap — with flashing animated GIFs as wallpapers and nothing but user generated content; without the need for definitive expression or linear articulation.

If you were to use one word to describe the Generation Y – in particular, its technologically focused subsectioned demographic, the iGeneration — only one word can be used. MySpace.

In essence, MySpace allowed an entire generation of people today — who have since migrated to Facebook, Twitter and other social media streams — to colour in their pictures without being confined to the lines.

MySpace — though it powered through the bubble of the 21st century and even lasted longer than its other social counterparts, Bebo in particular — users may as well salvage whatever data they can from the site before it inevitably has its life support machine pulled.

The site, without doubt, will not be bought out. What is there to buy?

News Corporation acquired a sinking ship when it bought it in the first place. But the Generation Y have since said their short goodbyes to the network in favour of more business-oriented and structured sites — particularly Facebook and LinkedIn.

For now, it is a waiting game. MySpace is on its last legs. Its hair is falling out, its children are asking it to change the will, and you can hear the distant cocking a sawn-off shotgun just behind the tool shed.

I still predict that while we are only half way through the year — MySpace will not survive it. By Christmas, what was once known as MySpace will drift into the abyss of whispers as though it never existed in the first place.

But to the younger generation, it will live with us all for quite some time.

While it may be on its last legs and part of us all want to put it out of its misery out of kindness, more than anything — it was the first place for dial-up connected kids to express ourselves in a truly beautiful, hedonistic and open way.

Good day to confirm this comment I would appreciate T h e b e s t o f Z D N e t d e l i v e r e d your website very nice to everyone Yes, Oracle is the only one with shared-disk architecture, but that is there advantage. It means you can add or remove nodes and the database lives on. In a shared nothing architecture, if you lose a node, you lose the system. I'm sure Oracle appreciates EMC highlighting their advantage.I also desire to signal in your RSS feeds. Thank you as soon as once again and maintain up the great operate Awesome post! Thank you very much || thanks for nice content this is really benefit to me.
If MySpace dies out, what becomes of those profiles of users who have passed on since then? Those profiles that were left as shines.

@Cylon Centurion MySpace has no reason to keep profiles alive just because somebody claims is a "shrine".

If you want to have a "web shrine", then pay to keep the service alive or at the least, have the decency of doing a little bit of work and look for another free host.
I checked into myspace a little while ago, there was a forlorn message from Tom in my inbox, dated November 2008.
Yeah well, I used MySpace awhile ago and honestly the site was enjoyable as long as they didn't keep screwing with it but they did... Stability became second rate and people were willing to forget about music on their site in exchange for a much more stable experience.
In bigger news, Myspace still exists.

This is the reason why investing on Facebook is just plain stupid. This is where Facebook will be by 2013.
@wackoae I sure hope so.
@wackoae

But, it won't. Not unless it's bought out by News Corp.
@wackoae and @vgsmike

I'll give you a buck for the MySpace code and 2 bucks for the Facebook code. And I'll up it another 5 bucks if you throw in the Pandora code.
Here's what I don't understand... How is it that a once powerful force like Myspace can completely die, when even LESSER known social networks like "TAGGED" have been around for five years? I had never even heard of that stupid thing until a girl who refused to be on Facebook or Myspace gave me her Tagged profile. Certainly there has to be some level more value in the MySpace brand than the Tagged brand?
@Playdrv4me And the "brand" does have some value.
I expect someone to resurrect it much in the way the did for napster. Myspace is mainly for bands now. I think that with some tweaking it might get transformed into an independent music market or the like.

I don't think facebook will crater in the same way. They might lose position, but they will continue on in much the way yahoo does. They will need a truly epic Fail to completely collapse, but I'm still curious to see how far they get away with stuff with all of the privacy changes and the like.
@richard233
Actually myspace isnt for bands anymore. it was founded as a msuic site for social interaction and promotion which made it great. Once it was sold it kept going away from the things that made it great. it gave users a web page home with control to be an individual and promote themselves their way. It has since gone down the drain as newscorp went away from that alienating its users trying to be like facebook and that killed it. facebook is an unsafe sterile pool of crap while myspace was unique and for the the users. I hope it gets returned to its original state by someone and brings the music central indie feel it once had or even add it to like what garageband.com was before that got basterdized into iLike which sucks. I still have my labels myspace page but user it rarely as they set it up like face book and went to a cold corporate yuppy setup where custumization and individuality were removed for the un fun facebook social blog aspect. Return to its roots and it could be great again.
@richard233 i loved myspace as a musician, since you could actually post new songs and it was easy for people to see your schedules and get a lot of info in the band quick. facebooks moving in that direction but i like reverbnation since its actually popular and pretty similar to how myspace was treating musicians. if they just make it a music type networking, or any type of arts for that matter it could be resurrected i think.
Since there is an already large base of registered users on myspace, I would think that they would be able to take advantage of this fact to make something new. Maybe a Skype competitor or something like that. One of the worst parts about getting a new site started is convincing users to sign up. They've already got a ton of users (who hopefully still remember their passwords). Just give them a reason to use it.
It won't break my heart nor will it break my heart if all these social networks go under.

What I hated about myspace,
Snooki_smoosh_smoosh 28th Jun
was all the active content on the profile pages. Browsing through Myspace was like walking through a mine field, sooner or later you got burned with some active content that tries to install a fake AV on your machine.

I remember my first Social Network, Bolt. Facebook to will likely see a day when people just get bored with it, and move onto something new, just like Myspace was to Bolt, and facebook to Myspace.
@Snooki_smoosh_smoosh
Never got an infection or account theft from myspace would be almost impossible unless you were randomly clicking crap which you never do. the iamges and icons made it personal to each user which made it great facebook is so sterile and restrictive. its the apple of the web just horrible and if you though myspace was a virus waiting I know you avoid facebook and twitter considering those are just giant open doors for infection with zero security.
MySpace is the pretty young girl who liked to party too hard and now is a toothless, leather-skinned hooker infested with every venereal disease known to man and quite possibly a few new ones we don't know about.

Their biggest mistake was selling out to NewsCorp who have no idea or interest in what the youth market wants. MySpace should have took the deal from Viacom. Sure Viacom is dumbing down humanity with most of their programming, but the kids just eat that trash up.

And if NewsCorp was clueless about the youth market, they are clueless to the 10th power about the Black and Hispanic youth market, which are the only groups still using MySpace. And even that market is now migrating to Facebook. Soon it'll just be the sex-offenders left.

Personally, I've always hated MySpace for pretty much all the reasons other commenters liked it. The ability to make your page an unreadable, pulsating mess of animated gifs, bad music and malware just doesn't appeal to me.
