Windows 7 has a new default wallpaper and logo

After my normal flick through of technology websites this morning, I came across the news of another leaked post-RC build of Windows 7, build 7232. With this comes a new wallpaper which appears to set the final flag-based logo which all Windows versions have had since Windows 95.

The new wallpaper is named "Harmony" and replaces the default fish background which we saw in previous builds. Unknown yet, this could also be the default unchangable background in Windows 7 Starter edition, designed for emerging markets.

After speaking to a Microsoft employee friend based here in England, she says this logo also represents the new Windows logo.

The logo and wallpaper seems to go with a natural look, juxtoposed with that of new technology. The "elements" are clear with trees and a meadow in both the red and yellow areas, an underwater theme in the blue with a small trace of a fin on a fish nope, it's a bird - (should have put my glasses on), and the air with butterflies in the green area. It's almost as if Microsoft is going with an earth, air, fire and water theme.

What do you think: does it strike out to you? Does it reflect Windows 7 to you? Leave a comment.

  • Strike out

I re-papered my study last week, finding it equally interesting ;-)

It's OK ... but if you want blow my skirt up ... go to a photography web site already.

  • A bird?

"an underwater theme in the blue with a small trace of a fin on a fish"

Might also be a bird - it looks like a bird to me.

  • . . . and a note on Microsoft's new themes: Everything is so abstract?

. . . and a note on Microsoft's new themes: Everything is so abstract?

It seems to me that abstract art and landscapes are the only things that are really in on Microsoft's themes. I'd line to see more themes that are less abstract and less Utopian.

I'd like to see some concrete stuff like cars and chess. Interestingly enough, the "chess piece" profile picture that I can use in XP/Vista is missing from the RC build of 7, as are other profile pictures that are more concrete and less abstract.

Chances are, I'll end up creating some of my own themes from the left side of my brain.

  • Weak

The background looks more like something I'd expect from
HP-- it isn't as strong as it should be for such an
    amazing release.

Then again, most vendors slap their own logo on a crappy
background before they ship a PC anyway. Unlikely most
people will ever see this as default.

  • Calling Saul Bass

I know he's dead but there are other graphic designers.
    Why not hire one?

Looks great! I could stare at that all day. Much better than a brown poop smudged wall paper found on other operating systems.

  • Doesn't matter

    I'm a Luddite.

One of the first things I do with any new computer is to get rid of the desktop wallpaper and special effects. Those are replaced by one of the very dark, solid colors. Blue, red, and green work best for me. The plain desktop is non-distracting, non-glaring, and makes icon titles clear and sharp.

As for pretty pictures and paintings, I hang 'em on the walls.

And it's BLUE!!! Wow. Blue!!! Who'da thought!!!

And that logo, and those artsy lines that don't pixelate like
on XP and that bag, and those shoes!!!!

Since most users clutter up their Desktop with useless shortcuts, what does it matter what the wallpaper is?
